Residency at the

West-Eastern Divan Orchestra The return to their native city of Martha Argerich and Daniel Barenboim Martha Argerich Daniel Barenboim – two childhood friends from , born just a year apart, who • both grew up to become global superstars – proved an unforgettable evening of pianistic magic. Ludwig van Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 2 in B flat major, Op. 19 Although the two great artists both took part as children in the legendary Friday-night soirées held at the Buenos Aires home of the Carlos Gustavino Rosenthals, the two wunderkinder only ever played games together, Bailecito never music – so their joint recital at the Teatro Colón in 2014, following their historic reunion in Berlin earlier that year, was the first time that these two giants of the keyboard had ever played together in Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky their home town. Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36 So enthusiastic was the response that they returned to the Colón in Jean Sibelius 2015 for another recital as part of the second Festival de Música y Valse triste, Op. 44 No. 1 Reflexión. Created and curated by Barenboim, the festival’s title is meant in the sense of “reflection not simply upon music but also upon Mikhail Glinka our lives”. Thus, this year’s theme was “Coexistence”, an idea that was Overture to Ruslan and Lyudmila (conducted by Lahav Shani) realized not just through the active participation of ’s Muslim, Jewish and Christian communities but also through the presence of the Piano Martha Argerich West-Eastern Divan Orchestra – which, under Barenboim’s guidance, Orchestra West-Eastern Divan Orchestra famously unites young Israeli and Arab players from the warring states Conductor Daniel Barenboim of the Middle East in a model of peaceful harmony.

Video Director Christoph Engel “Coexistence” was also, of course, key to this recital, in terms not just of two musical parts coming together in the hands of two very different yet equally distinctive artistic personalities – “the mercurial Martha and Daniel the master-architect” (Buenos Aires Herald) – but also of Length: approx. 100' two different instruments: while Argerich was playing a “standard” Cat. no. A 835 50007 0000 Steinway, her duo partner was showing off his brand-new “Barenboim”, custom-made for him and modelled on Liszt’s piano. The result was A co-production of Artear and UNITEL CLASSICA an amazing performance of works by Schumann, Debussy and Bartók in cooperation with the Teatro Colón and “in which two very individual ways of playing united (…) to turn every the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra interpretation into something unforgettable” (Página|12).
