Julia Kostsova GALLERY ON FIFTH Naples, Florida Julia Kostsova RUSSIAN TRADITIONS Exhibition dedicated to 400 anniversairy of Romanov's Dynasty Russian Traditions Russia is indeed a unique country, which, along with highly developed modern culture carefully preserves the national traditions deeply rooted not only in the Orthodox religion but also in paganism. The Russians still celebrate pagan holidays, many people believe in numerous omens and legends. Christianity gave Russians such great holidays as Easter and Christmas, and Paganism - Maslenitsa and Ivan Kupala. Old traditions are passed on from generation to generation. Easter Easter is the day of the resurrection of Christ. The holiday came to Russia from Byzantium together with Russia's christening in the end of the 10th century. Since then, this Christian holiday has been widely celebrated all over Russia. Christmas Christmas is the holiday of the birth of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world, whose advent gave people hope for mercy, kindness, truth and eternal life. The Orthodox Church observes Christmas according to the Julian Calendar, on January 7, while Western churches celebrate it on December 25, in accordance with the Gregorian Calendar. Ivan Kupala Even in the time of the ancient pagan deity Ancient Russians used to have Kupalo, the God of summer fertility. In his honor people of sang songs and jumped over the bonfire. This ritual act has become an annual celebration of summer solstice, combining a pagan and Christian traditions. Kupala got the name Ivan after the baptizing of Russia, when he was replaced by John the Baptist (the way he was percepted by common people), who baptized Christ and whose birthday was celebrated on 24 June.

FOUR IMMORTALS POETS GARDEN AT ARROW PARK CONTENTS FROM THE 1970 ORIGINAL COMMEMORATIVE BOOKLET REDESIGNED AS PART OF THE ARROW PARK HISTORICAL ARCHIVE – SEVENTIETH YEAR PROJECT — 1948-2018 ARROW PARK 1061 Orange Turnpike PO Box 465 Monroe, New York 10949 arrowparkny.com ORIGINALLY WRITTEN/PUBLISHED 1970 FOUR IMMORTALS Foreword This booklet is a collection of literary sketches of four world-known poets - Taras Shevchenko, Alexander Pushkin, Walt Whitman and Yanka Kupala. In introducing this booklet, we want to acquaint you with a short history of the monuments to the Four Immortals and Arrow Park where the monuments were erected. The park itself is situated in the beautiful hills of Upper New York State. One of its powerful attractions is a large lake for fishing, boating and swimming. Its vast wooded areas make for a beautiful resting place for the park's members and their friends. This naturally provided resort complex is complemented by specially built cottages for guests who spend their summers basking in the sun and enjoying the clean fresh air. Originally purchased by the progressive Russian American community, Arrow Park has presently become the center for other groups, including Ukrainian Americans, Polish Americans and many other nationality groups, in this manner adding an international touch to the whole project. During the summer months, Arrow Park hosts Ukrainian, Russian and Polish Days, at which the respective cultural groups (choirs, dancers and orchestras) present their programs and popularize the rich cultures of their nations for the benefit of warmly responding diverse audiences. Guided by the spirit of friendship and cultural relations with their brothers across the ocean, the shareholders of Arrow Park set up a special body, known as the Arrow Park Cultural Project Committee.

O rewitalizacji źródeł etnograficznych i historycznych The feasts of “Stado” and “Kupala Night” in the rituals of the Polish Rodnovers. A revival of ethnographic sources Abstract: It is argued in this study that contemporary Rodnovers (practitioners of Slavic Native Faith, or Rodnovery) revive ethnographic and historical sources by applying two strategies: (re)construction of pre-Christian Slavic rituals and (re)paganisation of 19th-c. folk rituals. It is a new kind of practice: source materials are not modified for the purpose of presentation to receipients from “outside” (as is the case with folklore and historical reconstruction) but function as the basic substrate of religious customs and beliefs, practiced by Rodnovers themselves. Despite appearances, this is not a continuation of folk tradition but a new religious phenomenon, whose major actors use ethnography and folk content in a creative and unorthodox manner. Key words: new paganism; Rodnovery; new religious movements; Slavic Native Faith; folk rituals; Kupala Night Wstęp Teza, którą chciałbym rozwinąć w niniejszych rozważaniach i zilustro- wać dwoma przykładami, jest następująca: Formy obrzędów religijnych praktykowanych przez współczesnych polskich rodzimowierców kształtują 214 Piotr Grochowski się w wyniku procesu, który nazywam rewitalizacją źródeł etnograficznych i historycznych poprzez ich twórczą, nieortodoksyjną i wariantywną inter- pretację, a zarazem adaptację, czyli dostosowywanie do zrekonstruowanych wcześniej wierzeń przedchrześcijańskich Słowian oraz współczesnych wa- runków społeczno-kulturowych.
