B’rosh Hashana – Our fate is Sealed

B’rosh Hashana (Mishkan HaNefesh) On Rosh Hashanah, we plunge like swimmers into a sea of words. On Yom Kippur, the sea rises, then crests- and we emerge, sealed by the wax, warmed by the fire of braided candle.

The New Year is like a trailhead – opening wide before us; The day of fasting- narrow, breathless, so quick to close. We contemplate a New Year, and this we know:

Some of us will live and some of us will die. Even so - Some will die young and some very old. The way we act, Some by water and some by fire. the way we speak, Some by sword and some by beast. the way we meet God’s image in ourselves and Some by hunger and some by thirst. in others – Some by plague, and some by earthquake These things have great power to make our lives Some by stoning, and some by strangling. matter. Some of us will feel at ease; some will be rest- less. Therefore, Let us make whole the broken Some will have peace of mind; some will have shards, strife. Green and thick the withering grass. Some will be tranquil; some will be tormented. Let the wind full us with urgeny for life. …. Let dreams give birth to justice and goodness. Some will be raised high, some will be brought God of holiness, God of hope, Let us glimpse low. Your truth, Some will have riches, some will be impover- as we attach our hopes to Yours. ished.

V’zot HaTorah: Dressing the Sefer Torah

וְזאת הַ תורָּ האֲשֶׁ ר שםמשֶׁה לִפְ נֵּי בְ נֵּייִשרָּ לאֵּ עַל יפִ ה' בְ יַד משֶׁ ה: V’zot hatorah asher sam Moshe lifnei venei Israel al pi Adonai, b’yad Moshe

This is the Torah that Moses placed before the people of Israel to fulfill the word of God.

The Power of the Shofar (Kathy DeGane, Voices of the Shofar) The shofar was sounded by watchmen on the walls of a city to alert the people to imminent dan- ger. One long blast during the watches of the night reassured the inhabitants of the city that all was well. But a series of sharp, staccato blasts raised the alarm that enemies were in sight and to rally to arms. …The sound of the shofar reminds us that we are watchers on the walls, appointed to alert others…

That danger is already here. We are indeed watchers on the walls, appointed to alert others to the climate crisis that is upon us. On these Holy days, as this survey of biblical texts on the shofar illustrates, awareness of the dangers to all life and to the planet upon which we live can lead to repentance. Repentance can lead to a cry and call to action.

The Kaddish fortifies faith, at a time when faith can waiver; it joins us to other Jews; and it summons us to labor for a better world. Departing Text (On The Wings Of Awe)

Now with senses newly quickened by the time we have spent together, Let us walk out into the New Year with the lessons we have learned: Having listened to the Shofar, let us listen also to the good voices in our lives, Having looked into the Torah, let us look to find our best selves, Having tasted honey, let us bring the taste of sweetness to the lives of those we love, Having smelled the fragrant Year outside our praying place, let us work to preserve the fragrance from the destructive forces in the world, Having touched the ancient thoughts and yearnings of our people, let us resolve to let the needs of others touch us, moving us to action in the days ahead

High Holiday Service For Yom Kippur

יום כיפור

Preparing for Worship Rejoice In Being Together הִנֵּהמַ ה־ּטֹוב ּומַ ה־נָּעִ ים שֶׁבֶׁתאַחִ ים גַם־יָָּֽחַ ד:

Hine mah tov uma na’im, shevet achim gam yachad The Season of Return (Alden Solovy, This Grateful Heart)

This is the season of return: Of returning to ourselves and to our people, Of returning to our God And returning to our calling.

This is the season of quiet: Of quieting the mind to hear the Voice, Of quieting the heart to hear the Soul, Of quieting the self to make space for the Ein Sof.

This is the season of surrender: Of surrendering odd quirks and old habits to dignity and kindness, Of surrendering fear and despair to hope and adventure, to honor and service.

This is the season of return: Of returning to wholeness and love, To prayer and charity, To family and friends. This is the season that reminds us of who we are And who we might become. The season that summons us to return ourselves to purpose, And our lives to God’s Holy Word.

We Return (Noah Aronson and Elana Arian) We Return... to Love to Truth to You

We Return... to Love to Truth to You

And let us give ourselves over to the power of this day… And let us give ourselves over to holiness and awe And let us calm the voice of dread and fear And let us submit to the Power beyond and within And let us take the path of sincere return And let us give ourselves over to prayer of the heart And let us feel the pull of righteousness And let us give ourselves over to the still small voice And let us awaken to the wholeness of body and soul And let us awaken to the wholeness of thought and deed And let us see in the darkness a doorway of hope And let us give ourselves over to the power of this day.

Morning Blessings

Preparation for the Shma (On The Wings of Awe)

Let eyelids close, let disharmony disappear…

Shma: Listen, hearken, let the words’ familiar sounds dapple the darkness… Yisrael: Israel is each of us, Jacob wrestling with God, our people wrestling with our doubts and our destiny… Adonai: Your Name, Your innermost Name, the Name You love best, the compassionate Name we heard Moses call You face to face, the Name that means: I am… Eloheinu: O God whose rule is just, God who promised Israel eternity like the stars, God with us, Gottenyu, oy Gottenyu… Adonai: Wherever we are is You; wherever the world is, is You… Echad: You alone, You are life. Disharmony and harmony, shaded light and dappled dark, wicked acts, compassionate people, justice and cruelty, all find their hidden purpose in Your innermost Name. Let disharmony (soon, and in our own day!) disappear…

Un’taneh Tokef- Awesome Nature of this Day Unetaneh Tokef (Mishkan HaNefesh)

Today we call it by its rightful name: for all we forget A Day of Dread – nora v’ayom. and all we deny; Unwelcome visitor, for we want to live and we fall on our knees in a sunny world where God is love in the depths of our hearts and all endings are happy. for we know that the bell tolls But the drumbeat sounds for us. and the words tumble down and even the angels tremble with fear. The words are old and the language was theirs, For all things are judged but the call is real and the message is ours: and all things will pass Take hold of your life and life ends in a heartbeat, while you still have the chance; and death knows our name. for your story will end and it might be this year

in a way you don’t know. At the start of the year, Take hold of your life: in the season of truth, make things right while you can; comes the Day of Remembrance and don’t miss the call of the Day of Dread.

B’rosh Hashana- Our Fate is Sealed Who By Fire By Leonard Cohen

And who by fire, who by water Who in the sunshine, who in the night time Who by high ordeal, who by common trial Who in your merry merry month of may Who by very slow decay And who shall I say is calling?

And who in her lonely slip, who by barbiturate Who in these realms of love, who by something blunt Who by avalanche, who by powder Who for his greed, who for his hunger And who shall I say is calling?

And who by brave assent, who by accident Who in solitude, who in this mirror Who by his lady's command, who by his own hand Who in mortal chains, who in power And who shall I say is calling?

Vidui – Confession of Sin

Vidui (Marcia Falk) We look outward, inward, see how we have hurt and harmed, how hurt embeds even in the smallest wounds. We give ourselves over, begin to make amends, begin to make ourselves whole.

Our God and God of all generations, may our prayers come before You; and when we turn to You, do not be indifferent. We are not so stubborn as to say before You: “We are blameless and do no wrong.” In truth, we have done wrong, and we join now in confession before You

Al Cheit: For those times we missed the Mark

Vidui for the Twenty-First Century (Mishkan HaNefesh) We confess our sins against the earth. We commit ourselves to saving it. We have assaulted our planet in countless ways. We have blamed others for the spiraling, deepening crisis We have consumed thoughtlessly and irresponsibly We have driven myriad species to the point of extinction We have exhausted irreplaceable resources We have failed to transcend borders and act unselfishly We have given in to our many appetites and our gluttony We have harmed beyond repair the habitats of living beings We have ignored the signs of change in our climate and our seasons We have jeopardized the well-being of future generations We have known the problem but left problem-solving to others We have lost sight of our role as God's partners in creation We have mocked, cynically, those who love creatures great and small We have neglected the environment, most of all, in places of poverty We have over-populated our cities and over-fished our oceans We have polluted seashore and sky, fertile soil and freshwater springs We have questioned and doubted solid evidence of danger We have ravaged the old growth forests-ecosystems created over centuries We have spewed poison into the bloodstream of our land: its rivers, lakes, and estuaries We have transformed dazzling beauty into industrial ugliness We have used shared resources for personal gain and corporate profit We have violated the commandment "Do not destroy" We have wasted precious treasures, our God-given gifts We have exploited the weakest and most vulnerable in our midst And yet we yearn to be better guardians of this earth and the fullness thereof Let us be zealous now to care for this unique corner of the cosmos, this planet- our sacred home

V’al Kulam

For all these failures of judgement and will- God of forgiveness, forgive us, pardon us lead us to atonement

Cheshbon HaNefesh: Introspection and Silent Confession

We take a moment now for personal reflection and confession. In the privacy of our own hearts we acknowledge the wrongs we have done, intentionally, and unintentionally. Consider the many relationships in your lives and what you might do to strengthen them, or use the readings below as a guide.

I reflect on the harm I have done to myself through failure to care for my body and preserve my health; through failure to develop my mind and grow in learning; through failure to develop my spiritual life and seek God‘s presence; through failure to remain faithful to my ideal; through indulging in negative thinking or self obsession; through closing myself off from others rather than reaching out; through fear of change or falling into a routine. I reflect on the harm I have done to my family and friends through my failure to listen with care, empathy, and compassion; through my failure to give my attention and energy to sustaining relationships; through my failure to convey affection and gratitude; through stubbornness or giving into anger; through my failure to fulfill my responsibilities and commitment; through gossip and failure to give the benefit of the doubt; through my failure to forgive and let go of grudges.

Sh’ma Koleinu (Debbie Friedman)

Sh'ma koleinu, Adonai Eloheinu Chus v'rachem aleinu V'kabeil b'rachamim uv'ratzon et t'filateinu Ki Eil shomei'a t'filat v'tachanunim Atah

Hear our voice, Adonai our God; Have compassion upon us And accept our prayer with favor and mercy For You are a God who hears prayers and supplication

Cry No More (Alden Solovy)

Cry no more for the sins of the past. Rejoice in your repentance and your return. For this is the day God made To lift you up from your sorrow and shame To deliver you to the gates of righteousness.

Remember this: Love is the crown of your life And wisdom the rock on which you stand. Charity is your staff And justice your shield. Your deeds declare your kindness, And your works declare your devotion.

Cry no more for your fears and your dread. Rejoice in your blessings and your healing. For this is the day God made To raise your countenance and hope, To deliver you to the gates of holiness.
