Dozens are injured but none seriously. One planted in the Banca Nazionale dell’Agricoltura in the Piazza Fontana in Milan claims 16 lives and wounds a further hundred people. In Rome a bomb explodes in the Banca Nazionale del Lavoro, wounding 14, and two devices go off at the cenotaph in the Piazza Venezia, wounding 4. Another bomb — unexploded — is discovered at the Banca Commerciale in the Piazza della Scala in Milan. -

European Community No. 26/1984 July 10, 1984 Contact: Ella Krucoff (202) 862-9540 THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT: 1984 ELECTION RESULTS :The newly elected European Parliament - the second to be chosen directly by European voters -- began its five-year term last month with an inaugural session in Strasbourg~ France. The Parliament elected Pierre Pflimlin, a French Christian Democrat, as its new president. Pflimlin, a parliamentarian since 1979, is a former Prime Minister of France and ex-mayor of Strasbourg. Be succeeds Pieter Dankert, a Dutch Socialist, who came in second in the presidential vote this time around. The new assembly quickly exercised one of its major powers -- final say over the European Community budget -- by blocking payment of a L983 budget rebate to the United Kingdom. The rebate had been approved by Community leaders as part of an overall plan to resolve the E.C.'s financial problems. The Parliament froze the rebate after the U.K. opposed a plan for covering a 1984 budget shortfall during a July Council of Ministers meeting. The issue will be discussed again in September by E.C. institutions. Garret FitzGerald, Prime Minister of Ireland, outlined for the Parliament the goals of Ireland's six-month presidency of the E.C. Council. Be urged the representatives to continue working for a more unified Europe in which "free movement of people and goods" is a reality, and he called for more "intensified common action" to fight unemployment. Be said European politicians must work to bolster the public's faith in the E.C., noting that budget problems and inter-governmental "wrangles" have overshadolted the Community's benefits. -

SAGGI E RICERCHE L ARCHIVIO DEL SOCIALISMO ITALIAN0 CUSTODITO DALLA FONDAZIONE FILIPPO TURATI DI FIRENZE RENZO RICCHI Firenze Abstract: L esigenza della fondazione di un Archivio storico del socialismo, sul modello del Bureau de documentation creato dal Partito operaio belga sin dal 1913, o del Labour Research Department promosso dai laburisti inglesi nel 1918, si è manifestata in Italia con un certo ritardo. Infatti all indomani della prima guerra mondiale il Partito Socialista Italiano mancava ancora degli strumenti organizzativi propri di un moderno partito di massa. Una prima personale iniziativa risale agli inizi del 1922 quando Cerchiaro, redattore dell Avanti!, si dedicò, tra non poche difficoltà e incomprensioni, alla costituzione di un archivio del quotidiano del partito. Ora la seconda scelta è obbligata, perché, al- meno a partire dal 1980, ancor più dall’elezione diretta di Craxi a segretario nel congresso di Palermo, c’è solo più una storia sociolo- gica, ma non politica, del partito in quanto tale, essendosi tra l’altro spento lentamente quello slancio corale, fortemente creativo, che aveva caratterizzato la sua vicenda, a partire dagli eventi del Midas fi no all’assise programmatica di Rimini. Del resto di quei primi anni in queste interviste si dice poco, se non della cangiante trama politica interna che portò Craxi a por- si stabilmente alla guida del partito. E paradossalmente a segnare quest’ultimo evento sono principalmente due fatti esterni: la dram- matica vicenda che segna la morte di Aldo Moro e il successivo rove- sciamento della sua strategia politica con il congresso democristiano del preambolo. Il congresso del preambolo cancellava infatti ogni ulteriore proposito della sinistra socialista, come nella sua intervista sottolinea Signorile, di dare un ruolo al psi in un rinnovato quadro di unità nazionale, già di per sé velleitario, non essendo più questa un’inclinazione realistica, e aprendosi a Craxi la strada di una rinno- vata collaborazione di centrosinistra. -

by Leo Sisti On July 14, 2008, at 7:30 a.m., Ottaviano Del Turco was about to leave his home in the small village of Collelungo for a trip to L’Aquila, the capital of the Abruzzo region in southern Italy. He had been Abruzzo’s governor since 2005 after resigning from the European parliament where he was elected to the Socialist group. Just as Del Turco was getting into his car, an agent of the Guardia di Finanza appeared and handed Del Turco an arrest warrant, signed by a judge in Pescara, another Abruzzo town. The warrant placed Del Turco, 63, under arrest on charges of corruption and extortion. He was suspected of taking a bribe of 5.8 million euros (US$7 million) in exchange for his help in a financial scheme to save Vincenzo Angelini, a private clinic owner, from bankruptcy. Angelini was claiming unpaid credits of 150 million euros (US$194,000,000) from the Abruzzo region. Del Turco’s long political career makes him well-known and powerful. In 1977, at 39, he became deputy secretary general of the Socialist-Communist Trade Union CGIL (CGIL — Confederazione Generale Italiana del Lavoro). In 1987, he challenged the late Socialist Party Leader Bettino Craxi, who was then prime minister, on “moral issues.” In 1993, a year after the “Clean Hands” investigation snagged Craxi in its net, Del Turco was given by Craxi an envelope containing the foreign account numbers of the Socialist Party. Del Turco refused to open the envelope, because he didn’t want to share any responsibility in a dangerous event linked to possible cases of bribery.
