MONSTERS OF ROCK 2020 Event Proposal
Project Background In 1988, Josh Nicholson and three friends convinced the leading rock bands of that era to bring the stadium-sized Monsters of Rock tour to Spokane. More than 30,000 avid music fans sold out the event at Joe Albi Stadium on July 20, 1988. Headlined by Van Halen, the concert featured Scorpions, Dokken, Kingdom Come and a then-up-and-coming Metallica. This one- me, world-class concert was a cultural phenomenon for the Inland Northwest that is s ll talked about even today.
In 2013, Josh began development of a film script based on his escapades that made the original Monsters of Rock concert stop happen. This project is currently shoo ng in Los Angeles and around Spokane with Director Dan Merchant (Z Na on) and North by Northwest. Sammy Hagar, the lead singer for Van Halen on the Monsters of Rock tour in 1988, is featured in the film and is also serving as an Execu ve Producer on the project. The film is being readied for a na onal release in the spring of 2021.
During a shoot day on the film this summer Sammy Hagar was told about the impending demoli on of Joe Albi Stadium and Sammy raised the possibility of producing a second Monsters of Rock concert to serve as a celebratory closing event for the venue - an idea he later shared with an enthusias c, sold out crowd at a Spokane concert stop in Spokane this past summer. A small team of experienced entertainment and live event professionals was brought together and is now working hard with Sammy Hagar’s management team to make M onsters of Rock 2020 a reality for this coming August.
Our goal is to create and produce a final Monsters of Rock concert at Joe Albi Stadium in Spokane, Washington on either August 15 or 22, 2020 for approximately 30,000 excited music fans.
Team Josh Nicholson has wri en and co-wri en over twenty screenplays since helping to convince the original Monsters of Rock tour to stop in Spokane in 1988. Josh has worked on various projects, created content and handled marke ng for his film company, Sunboyz Produc ons. Josh is also a real estate developer, crea ng Taylor Mountain and Aspen Acres, to iden fy and acquire property, sell lots, hire local vendors and coordinate efforts with government heads and engineering firms to complete their projects. Josh has hired North By Northwest to Produce and Dan Merchant as Director for his current project, “Monsters of Rock”. The film has completed pre-produc on, brought on Sammy Hagar as partner and will resume principal photography in June 2020.

Event Partners The Monsters of Rock 2020 team has already assembled crucial team players that will make the event a viable success for the Inland Northwest:
Northern Quest Resort & Casino will co-promote the event. Northern Quest currently presents and produces more than 40 concerts per year including some of the biggest names in music such as Keith Urban, Train, Snoop Dogg and Toby Keith. Their status as a world-class, four-diamond resort is an incredibly hard designa on to receive (there are only two in all of Eastern Washington with this pres gious designa on) will serve the event well with a partner hotel and services.
TicketsWest is a Spokane based company established as one of the largest entertainment cke ng providers in the Northwest. Their talented people will handle all cke ng aspects including the event cke ng build, crea on of an on-sale plan, management of cket inventory and providing cket scanning equipment at all points of entry.
StaffPro/CSC Security/CMS Security (does one of these have a contract for Albi?) is an established provider of professional safety and security for major live concerts and spor ng events for venues of every size including arenas, amphitheaters and stadiums.
Odom Corpora on is one of the largest adult beverage distributors in the country that represents the family of Miller/Coors products as well as the largest local brewery in the region, No-Li Brewhouse. Their impressive marke ng services add to our ability to promote this event successfully.
PepsiCo has added their strong support to this event and has pledged their devoted a en on to this event with a wide variety of beverage services and marke ng outreach. Monsters of Rock 2020 will be a tentpole event for their summer marke ng campaign.
Produc on Plan The sheer scale of Monsters of Rock 2020 is such that in order to take advantage of Joe Albi Stadium’s availability, an accelerated meline has been developed to make a concert happen this August. As of this wri ng, the talent lineup for the concert is being discussed by the team with the help of Sammy Hagar. An equally cri cal element to finalize is the rental of Joe Albi Stadium. A firm commitment from the venue in order is necessary to schedule the talent; that talent is making plans now for touring dates this summer.
Time is very much of the essence.
The venue will be rented by the produc on team via WestCoast Entertainment (WCE). WCE will be fully responsible for the venue and all liabili es for the event. Rental of the facility will be processed via a facility fee from which $1 per cket will be designated to Spokane Public Schools. Our expecta on is that this event should sell close to capacity at approximately 30,000 people.
Joe Albi Stadium will be modified and augmented, with the permission and oversight by Spokane Public Schools, to accommodate the event including: ● Public access to the floor ● ADA access and procedures ● Venue ligh ng ● Box office infrastructure for sales, audi ng and entry scanning ● Backstage infrastructure ● Dressing room and produc on trailers ● Catering tents and cooking infrastructure ● Portable restrooms brought in to augment restrooms ● Concessions tents, refrigerated trucks, coolers, and point of sale terminals
Everything required for the produc on of the event, including the list above, will be the responsibility of WCE. All event licensing including music royalty agreements will be secured and held by WCE. Our team has solid rela onships with third-party vendors in a variety of disciplines like security, catering, parking, stagehand labor and medical. These rela onships will be leveraged to provide essen al services built into the event budget.
We are commi ed to safeguarding the con nued use of the field before, during and a er the event. The en re field will be covered with a load-bearing hard covering recommended by the field turf company itself which will protect the football playing surface from the concert ac vi es, concert goers and produc on crew and equipment.
This team is commi ed to crea ng an overwhelmingly posi ve experience for guests and the community. To that end, we will invite event stakeholders to a series of mee ngs to provide updates on the produc on. Stakeholders will be asked for input in order to develop the best event plans possible.
Food and Beverage Joe Albi Stadium will require substan al enhancements to adequately serve 30,000 people on the day of the event. Our plan is to work with a third-party service provider to make this happen. We will work with this provider to bring in necessary equipment, trailers, portable units and more to give concert goers an amazing experience while at the show.
For any concert, especially a rock show, alcohol sales are expected by the public. We ask that Spokane Public Schools agree to allow alcohol to be sold in a professional, responsible manner at this event. With decades’ worth of live event experience, this team fully understands the liability inherent in this ac vity. WCE will be solely responsible for acquiring a special event liquor license as well as hiring adequate alcohol enforcement agents and Spokane Police officers to supervise the effort.
We will have a substan al security plan in place for the event developed in conjunc on with our security provider and Spokane Police Department. WCE accepts all liability for the event including alcohol sales. In addi on, as is customary with live events, a large event insurance policy will be taken out for the event.
Simply put, Monsters of Rock 2020 can’t happen without revenue from the sale of beer and wine. Event guests will expect a full-service food and beverage opera on. This is an enormous factor that will dictate the success of the event.
Security Plan As noted above, our team will develop a comprehensive security plan with our security provider and SPD. This plan will be shared with stakeholders for the event including Spokane Public Schools. Monsters of Rock 2020 will be fully staffed by industry event security professionals (no volunteers) inside and out of the venue. This includes security posi ons for stage security, backstage areas, venue perimeter, ushers, cket takers and parking lot patrols. Cer fied flaggers will be u lized for traffic control. Cer fied alcohol enforcement staff including MAST trained servers & alcohol enforcement personnel will be employed throughout the stadium.
Entry search procedures will be employed including a full search of every guest for weapons and contraband. Spokane Police will be deployed at all entries, parking lot and for traffic control on public streets leading to Joe Albi Stadium. There will be a strict 10:00pm curfew for noise and traffic enforced for the event. Professional paramedics and EMTs will be employed on site for any medical needs.
Marke ng A full-scale marke ng plan and budget will be developed that will successfully promote this event. This effort will require a web site, social media accounts, paid television and radio schedules, and media promo ons. There will also be substan al outreach made with the surrounding neighborhoods
Summary Spokane surprised the world in 1988 when the original Monsters of Rock tour made a stop when no one, especially young music fans living in the Inland Northwest, expected to see a spectacle that large fronted by the most famous rock bands of the day. Since then, hard-working event professionals have elevated Spokane into a must-play city that the music industry has had no choice but to no ce. Monsters of Rock 2020 will be an even larger cultural phenomenon that will bring untold benefits to the region including tourism dollars, regional promo on and posi ve public rela ons for all the stakeholders involved.
But on top of all of that, the event will be a totally unexpected celebratory send-off of a Spokane landmark nged with event memories that will last another 32 years. Thank you very much for reading this proposal and for considering our proposal to move forward with what will be a concert of a life me.
