Don't be surprised to find just as much information about Extreme as David Lee Roth's band or Sammy Hagar's solo career. This stems from the hope that this will be the first unbiased detailed history of the band. No specific era of the band is preferred over the others. The top Van Halen memorabilia collectors from around the world were asked to contribute all the information they could to this book. The result is the most detailed record of Van Halen and Van Halen-related releases, from singles to EPs, that has ever been compiled. It isn't perfect, though, so where there were problems in confirming a date of release or a serial number, blank spaces have been provided for entering more information if another collector has it. To make increasingly more accurate editions of this book, we encourage you to send any information not included in this book to: The Van Halen Encyclopedia P.O. Box 79 Oak Lawn, IL 60454 www.vanhalenencyclopedia.com HOW THIS BOOK IS ORGANIZED The Timeline The timeline is meant to explain the general history of the band, after which more information can be looked up in the rest of the book. The timeline entries are short and simple to tell a concise story that's easily understood. The more detailed accounts of events will be found in the alphabetical entries. The Alphabetical Entries The entries are arranged in a way that will make it easier to find what you're looking for. Every Van Halen song, whether released or unreleased, has its own entry. In some cases an unreleased Van Halen song may be known by two or three titles. In these cases you will find the song under its most common title. Songs by Van Halen-related and side-project bands do not have their own entries. You will find information about these individual songs under the entry for the album on which the song appears (every album by a Van Halen-related band does have its own entry). Entries detailing an individual Van Halen member's involvement on another artist's album have been listed under the artist's or band's name. For example, Eddie worked on a Dweezil Zappa album named Dweezil. You will find the information about this under the entry "Zappa, Dweezil." The entries also include six biographies, one for each past and present member of Van Halen. These biographies are not meant to be equal in length or detail. The longest biography is Eddie Van Halen's. This is because there has been a great deal more written about Ed in the past, giving the public much more knowledge of his role in the band. Alex Van Halen's biography is relatively short for similar reasons; he doesn't do many interviews. The Tours Though most of this section is self-explanatory, there is one part that may puzzle some people. For each tour there is a listing of whether an audio or video recording was made of each show. These recordings include any recordings circulating in public. It doesn't matter if the recording is an official release or a bootleg. If it's listed, it means that someone in the general public has a recording. This is not at all meant to encourage bootlegging. The listings are meant to give the reader an idea of how many Van Halen concerts are archived by their fans. DO NOT contact the author or the publisher about acquiring these recordings. The band has recorded many of their shows but have not provided any details of these recordings. Therefore, only the recordings that have been proven to exist in public are listed. • “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson
The Interplay of Authority, Masculinity, and Signification in the “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014, Holly Johnson ii Abstract This thesis will deconstruct the "grunge killed '80s metal” narrative, to reveal the idealization by certain critics and musicians of that which is deemed to be authentic, honest, and natural subculture. The central theme is an analysis of the conflicting masculinities of glam metal and grunge music, and how these gender roles are developed and reproduced. I will also demonstrate how, although the idealized authentic subculture is positioned in opposition to the mainstream, it does not in actuality exist outside of the system of commercialism. The problematic nature of this idealization will be examined with regard to the layers of complexity involved in popular rock music genre evolution, involving the inevitable progression from a subculture to the mainstream that occurred with both glam metal and grunge. I will illustrate the ways in which the process of signification functions within rock music to construct masculinities and within subcultures to negotiate authenticity. iii Acknowledgements I would like to thank firstly my academic advisor Dr. William Echard for his continued patience with me during the thesis writing process and for his invaluable guidance. I also would like to send a big thank you to Dr. James Deaville, the head of Music and Culture program, who has given me much assistance along the way.

PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.
