September 1998 sah ich das Video zu Dope Show1 von Marilyn Manson um halb vier Uhr nachmittags auf einem deutschen Musiksender namens Viva 2. Dieser Mann, ganz in Weiß gekleidet mit rotgefärbten Haaren und Brüsten, sowie die Farbgewalt, welche dieses Video beherrscht, und Bilder, die ich noch nie zuvor gesehen hatte, faszinierten mich. Im Anschluss an dieses Video ging ich direkt in einen Plattenladen in meiner Nähe und wollte das Album mit der Single The Dope Show – Mechanical Animals2 – unbedingt kaufen. Es war leider vergriffen, also kaufte ich die einzig verfügbare Marilyn Manson CD im Laden und ging nach Hause, um sie mir anzuhören. Es war das Album Smells like Children3 mit dem Eurythmics-Cover Sweet Dreams4. Ich war begeistert. Ich war 13. Von diesem Nachmittag an änderte sich mein Leben. Ich wurde vom Rock-Virus infiziert und leide heute noch in allen Formen daran, und das ist nur positiv gemeint. Heute bin ich 26 und höre immer noch diese Musik, und zwar ausschließlich. Vor zwölf Jahren habe ich angefangen E-Gitarre zu spielen und trage seitdem längeres Haar. Ich habe sie alle live gesehen: Metallica, AC/DC, KISS, Judas Priest, die Rolling Stones, Alice Cooper, Marilyn Manson, Iron Maiden und wie sie alle heißen. Ich habe sogar ein Studium angefangen, dass wenigstens im weitesten Sinne mit Rock zu tun hat, wo ich darüber lernen und noch mehr über die Zusammenhänge erfahren konnte. Dieses Studium ist jenes der Theater-, Film-, und Medienwissenschaft. Sie werden sich sicher fragen, was das mit Rock zu tun hat? Gar nichts und zugleich alles. Theater und Film sind Dinge, die Geschichten erzählen. Sie berichten über Schicksale, sind Metaphern für gesellschaftliche Einstellungen und sie verzaubern. Dies alles wird durch Medien an den Zuschauer oder Konsumenten herangeführt; zudem sind das Theater und der Film selbst auch Medien. Rockmusik ist ein Teil davon, wie jede andere Kunstform auch. Ab den 1960er Jahren begannen Künstler durch die intensive Nutzung neuer Technologien eine neue Kunstströmung zu formen und zu etablieren, welche als Popkultur bekannt wurde. Palen The University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, 2016 Under the Supervision of Professor David Pritchard This study examines the impact that the non-profit organization Farm Aid has had on the farming industry, policy, and the concert realm known as charity rock. This study also examines how the organization has maintained its longevity. By conducting an evaluation on Farm Aid and its history, the organization’s messaging and means to communicate, a detailed analysis of the past media coverage on Farm Aid from 1985-2010, and a phone interview with Executive Director Carolyn Mugar, I have determined that Farm Aid’s impact is complex and not clear.

I doubt that they do, you know, but you can rally people to think on serious issues together, and that’s what we’re trying to do.” - Bruce Springsteen, August 4, 2004, Nightline, ABC Network In August 1971, former member of the Beatles George Harrison gathered a group of musical colleagues that included Bob Dylan, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, and many others to perform two benefit concerts at New York’s Madison Square Garden. The so-called Concert for Bangladesh was intended to raise money for and awareness of the refugees fleeing a bloody civil war in Pakistan, a situation made even worse by a devastating cyclone earlier that year. The concert, which was also recorded as a film and a live album, became a model for how Rock and Roll stars could marshal their celebrity in support of a particular cause. The efforts of Harrison and his friends ultimately raised millions of dollars for UNICEF and established a new precedent for how Rock and Roll could engage the public in order to promote meaningful change in the world. The mass gatherings of the 1960s – including the March on Washington, antiwar demonstrations on college campuses, and the Woodstock festival – had clearly demonstrated the power of events to command media attention and to make voices heard.

It fun- damentally altered the rich world’s sense of its responsibility to the hungry and the poor, but didn’t solve anything. A quarter of a century on, we’re still arguing about the roots of the problem, let alone the so- lution, and—though there has been progress—Ethiopia’s food inse- curity gets worse, not better. Peter Gill was one of the most thorough and eff ective television journalists of his generation. He was there in 1984 and his work at the time added up to the most sensible, balanced and comprehensive explanation of what had happened.
