All deaths counted in the column labeled “ACCIDENTAL OVERDOSE” were the direct result of the drugs ingested by the decedent. The manner of death for most of these figures will be “Accident”. You will see “Undetermined” for a few where was not enough evidence available to make a final determination. The drugs noted as being present came from autopsy and/or toxicology reports taken after the death of the individual.
The deaths counted for inclusion in the column labeled “OTHER” include deaths that could include a manner of death that reads “Accident”, “Homicide” or “Undetermined”, but in any case the primary cause of death was something other than the direct misuse of drugs. This could include causes such as Blunt Trauma, Drowning, or (accidental, non-intentional) Asphyxia. The drugs identified as being present in the system of the deceased included in this category were discovered either during the autopsy process and/or with a toxicology assessment taken from available body fluid. Sometimes certain drugs are used in the medical setting, such as the emergency room, to provide comfort and care for the injured. This may show up on the DRUG RELATED DEATH STATISTICS 2007 THRU DECEMBER 31, 2011 available reports. The drugs present in the deceased’s system could be an underlying or contributing factor to the death. Or it could be present “just because”, meaning that the decedent could have a substance abuse issue, but his/her use was not medically or chemically responsible for the death. We cannot verify the social, environmental, or cultural impact the improper use of any drug (legal or otherwise) has, but observations and interactions with those who may have substance abuse issues would suggest that judgments and decisions can be dramatically impacted, often resulting in being at the “wrong place at the wrong time”. For that reason all statistics will be included for review and discussion.
Also recognize that all named drugs contained on any report are listed. We did not differentiate between prescribed or illicitly obtained, nor did we indicate which drugs may have been used by medical staff to treat an injured person. In only one case did I note that the levels of a properly prescribed and taken drug were within appropriate levels because it was readily available. Otherwise the levels and the means of administering were not considered when included on this report-only that they were detected.
