Reversible 2-colour hood-collar combination By: migoe http://www.burdastyle.com/projects/reversible-2-colour-hood-collar-combination
It’s almost winter here in Vienna so I needed (or rather: wanted) a new cap. As I tend to lose caps frequently, I decided to make this combined hood-collar, so I can wear it as a scarf instead of taking it of everytime I’m somewhere inside.
Materials knit fabric, elastic cord, buttons
Reversible 2-colour hood-collar combination 1 Step 1 — Intro
This is the first time I’m trying to give instructions for a sewing project, which is quite a challenge because I’m totally new to the sewing-vocabulary in English. I’m trying my best and hope that my instructions are easy to follow. I decided not to post the pattern for this, because it’s very easy to make your own pattern from your favourite hoody, I guess it’s even easier and quicker than downloading and printing.
Step 2 — Material paper for the pattern; about half a meter/yard of fabric (width 1 m/1 yd 4 in) in 2 colours (knit works great); elastic cord (about 10 cm/4 in); 4 buttons
Step 3 — The Pattern
Step 1 — Intro 2 Take your favourite hoody and fold the hood in half. Lay it on a piece of paper and sketch around. Add 2 cm/ 3/4 in for seam allowance and cut it out.
Step 4 — Cutting the fabric
Step 3 — The Pattern 3 It’s best, if you cut your two fabrics in only one step, so you get two symmetrical pairs. You fold both fabrics in half (right sides facing) and place your pattern on top. Make sure you have enough fabric left for the collar (1m/1yd 4in length, 15 cm/6in width – seam allowance included). Cut the pieces (not on the fold, you need two pieces of each colour for the hood). Then cut the collar. You can cut the collar on the fold or cut two pieces of each colour (50cm/20in length each) and sew them together.
Step 5 — Sewing the hood
Step 4 — Cutting the fabric 4 Now sew together the two hood pieces of each colour (right sides facing). I used a small zigzag-stitch.
Step 6
Step 5 — Sewing the hood 5 Sew together your two hoods. Make sure, that the middle seams match. Sew from one side to the other (still sewing on wrong side). Then turn it inside out and close the open lower edge. Topstitch close to the edge.
Step 7 — Adding the collar
Step 6 6 Lay one collar piece flat in front of you (right side up). Mark the middle, unless you sewed the collar out of two pieces. Lay the hood on the collar, lower edges matching. Middle seam of hood matching middle of collar.
Step 8
Step 7 — Adding the collar 7 Then place the second collar piece on top (wrong side facing you). Middle matching middle of hood and first collar piece. Sew the lower edge on wrong side. Make sure that this seam is above the topstitched lower edge of the hood, so that the topstitched seam will not show once the collar is turned inside out.
Step 9 — The loops for the buttons
Step 8 8 I used elastic cord for the button loops. I simply took two pieces of cord (about 5cm/2in long) and made a knot in each cord. Then I placed them in the middle of the open edges on both sides; loops between the two collar pieces, knots outside. Then I closed the side edges, sewing close to the edge, but next to the knot, so the knot will be in the collar when turning it inside out.
Step 10 — Closing the collar
Step 9 — The loops for the buttons 9 Turn everything inside out. Now you need to close the open lower edge of the collar. Again, topstitch close to the edge, folding in the raw edges of the fabric.
Step 11 — Buttons
Step 10 — Closing the collar 10 Put on your hood and decide, where to place the buttons. Sew them on – two on each colour, one right and one left. On both colours on the exact same positions. Therefore you should sew each pair on in one step.
