In Cantons that have provided many officers and soldiers in the European Foreign Service, the French military influence remained strong. This article aims to analyze the development of sabre fencing in the canton of Fribourg (and its French influence) through the manuals of a former mercenary (Joseph Bonivini), a fencing master in the federal troops (Joseph Tinguely), and an officer who became later a gymnastics teacher (Léon Galley). These fencing manuals all address the recourse to fencing as physical training and gymnastic exercise, and not just as a combat system in a warlike context. INTRODUCTION In military history, the Swiss are known for having offered military service as mercenaries over a long time period. In the 19th century, this system was however progressively abandoned, while the country was creating its own national army from the local militias. The history of 19th century martial practices in Switzerland did not yet get much attention from historians and other researchers. This short essay is thus a first attempt to set some elements about fencing in Switzerland at that time, focusing on some fencing masters from one Swiss Canton (Fribourg) through biographical elements and fencing manuals. -

Rules and Options The author has attempted to draw as much as possible from the guidelines provided in the 5th edition Players Handbooks and Dungeon Master's Guide. Statistics for weapons listed in the Dungeon Master's Guide were used to develop the damage scales used in this book. Interestingly, these scales correspond fairly well with the values listed in the d20 Modern books. Game masters should feel free to modify any of the statistics or optional rules in this book as necessary. It is important to remember that Dungeons and Dragons abstracts combat to a degree, and does so more than many other game systems, in the name of playability. For this reason, the subtle differences that exist between many firearms will often drop below what might be called a "horizon of granularity." In D&D, for example, two pistols that real world shooters could spend hours discussing, debating how a few extra ounces of weight or different barrel lengths might affect accuracy, or how different kinds of ammunition (soft-nosed, armor-piercing, etc.) might affect damage, may be, in game terms, almost identical. This is neither good nor bad; it is just the way Dungeons and Dragons handles such things. Who can use firearms? Firearms are assumed to be martial ranged weapons. Characters from worlds where firearms are common and who can use martial ranged weapons will be proficient in them. Anyone else will have to train to gain proficiency— the specifics are left to individual game masters. Optionally, the game master may also allow characters with individual weapon proficiencies to trade one proficiency for an equivalent one at the time of character creation (e.g., monks can trade shortswords for one specific martial melee weapon like a war scythe, rogues can trade hand crossbows for one kind of firearm like a Glock 17 pistol, etc.). -

Travel Writing 1700–1830 an Anthology
OXFORD WORLD’ S CLASSICS TRAVEL WRITING, 1700–1830 DURING the eighteenth century British travellers fanned out to every corner of the world, driven by diverse motives: scientific curi- osity, exploration, colonization, trade, diplomacy, and tourism, which began to flourish during this period. Those at home read voraciously in travel literature, which informed curious Britons about their nation’s activities overseas. The Empire, already estab- lished in the Caribbean and North America, was expanding in India and Africa and founding new outposts in the Pacific. Readers also enjoyed reports of travel closer to home: tours of the Continent and the British Isles themselves, whose beauty spots fuelled the rising fashion for picturesque and sublime scenery. Travel writing fed readers’ desire for adventure and exoticism and reinforced their pride in their nation’s achievements. It addressed scientific questions and gave philosophers food for thought. Political controversies were fought out in travel books, including the slavery question and the French Revolution debate. Above all, travellers’ descriptions of the wider world reveal their perception of themselves. Selected authors include Daniel Defoe, Joseph Addison, Mary Wortley Montagu, Samuel Johnson, James Boswell, James Cook, William Bartram, Mary Wollstonecraft, Dorothy Wordsworth, Walter Scott, Olaudah Equiano, Mungo Park, Ann Radcliffe, Matthew ‘Monk’ Lewis, and Frances Trollope. Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Price List Introduction to Universal Price List System Purpose This system was started in 1982 with the intention of providing a comprehensive pricing and encumbrance system for all the medieval fantasy games systems currently in use in the club where I used to role-play. It has been used, and still is being used, by a number of GMs for various games systems including Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, DragonQuest, HârnMaster, RoleMaster and RuneQuest. In fact the system became a club standard, which eased moving characters between various games. The intention of this system is to replace the monetary system and the (often woefully incomplete) price lists provided with the games system. However, it is assumed that one penny is equal to the basic unit of currency in the game system when it is required to translate prices from the host game to this system. For instance, one AD&D silver piece is equivalent to 1d in this system. Prices are quoted in pennies which is the basic silver coin, where 1d is one penny. Since I use a system of twelve pennies equalling one schilling, a lot of the more expensive items are quote in multiples of 3d. My fatigue / encumbrance systems work on weight of the item. Weight of most items likely to be carried are quoted in pounds (lb.) to the nearest 1/10th or ¼ of a pound for small items (and occasionally in fractions of an ounce (oz)). The price list is categorised by occupation, which do not necessarily have anything to do with guild structure, nor do they imply that goods are only sold in such specialist shops/workshops. -
