  • The Stowaway
Welcome Tell Me A (Shakespeare) Story When I was in college, I did a lot of part-time babysitting. One of my charges, a precocious 5-year-old named Olivia, was the daughter of an English professor of mine. During story time one evening, she chose a children’s book of tales from Shakespeare. While reading A Midsummer Night’s Dream aloud, I mispronounced the name of the fairy queen Titania, and Olivia was quick to correct me. “It’s ti-TAWN-yah,” she said with exasperation. Shakespeare was relatively new to me then. Having come from an underfunded urban public school system to a college where my peers were largely from high-performing schools, I spent a lot of time trying to catch up. I hadn’t expected to find myself challenged by a 5-year-old, however. At the time, I understood Olivia’s early access to Shakespeare to be the privilege of a child born to an academic. But in my role now at CSC, where I constantly preach that Shakespeare is for everyone, why would I draw the line of equity somewhere beyond people of a single-digit age? Because the truth is that a playwright like Shakespeare offers more than a good story or pretty language. Understanding his work brings cultural currency; there are countless references to his work all around us. And a positive experience—especially at an early age, where children are less likely to have preconceptions, and are more receptive to new language— can influence whether a person is fearful of, or looks forward to, future encounters with his work.

  • Travel Writing 1700–1830 an Anthology
OXFORD WORLD’ S CLASSICS TRAVEL WRITING, 1700–1830 DURING the eighteenth century British travellers fanned out to every corner of the world, driven by diverse motives: scientific curi- osity, exploration, colonization, trade, diplomacy, and tourism, which began to flourish during this period. Those at home read voraciously in travel literature, which informed curious Britons about their nation’s activities overseas. The Empire, already estab- lished in the Caribbean and North America, was expanding in India and Africa and founding new outposts in the Pacific. Readers also enjoyed reports of travel closer to home: tours of the Continent and the British Isles themselves, whose beauty spots fuelled the rising fashion for picturesque and sublime scenery. Travel writing fed readers’ desire for adventure and exoticism and reinforced their pride in their nation’s achievements. It addressed scientific questions and gave philosophers food for thought. Political controversies were fought out in travel books, including the slavery question and the French Revolution debate. Above all, travellers’ descriptions of the wider world reveal their perception of themselves. Selected authors include Daniel Defoe, Joseph Addison, Mary Wortley Montagu, Samuel Johnson, James Boswell, James Cook, William Bartram, Mary Wollstonecraft, Dorothy Wordsworth, Walter Scott, Olaudah Equiano, Mungo Park, Ann Radcliffe, Matthew ‘Monk’ Lewis, and Frances Trollope. ELIZABETH A. BOHLS is Associate Professor of English at the University of Oregon. She is the author of Women Travel Writers and the Language of Aesthetics, 1716–1818, recently translated into Japanese, and of articles on travel writing and the novel. She is currently finishing a book on identity and place in writings from the colonial British Caribbean.

Politics Business Science Sport Roses Freshers Muse › Music › News Features Reviews Playlists Live Review: Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds @ First Direct Arena, Leeds 27/04/2016 Noel Gallagher’s solo project continues to offer astounding live performances to ever- enthusiastic crowds, mixing impressive solo tracks with euphoric, much-loved Oasis tunes By Jack Davies, Deputy Editor (2017) Saturday 30 April 2016 Source: Nullrend Flickr Rating: ★★★★★ I feel I should start this review by admitting that I am, undisputedly, an emphatic fan of all things Gallagher, irrelevant of exactly which brother is involved. As such, the prospect of seeing Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds in Leeds was one that had me excited for weeks before, even if the gig was on a Wednesday night. Now, this fact alone may lead you to disregard this review completely as something that is bound to be highly one-sided and drenched in bias. But, if you’ve even managed to get to this point without dismissing the article as yet another self-confessed Gallagherite blowing sunshine up Liam or Noel’s arse, then hear me out. As a massive fan, I find myself in the privileged position of having seen both Liam’s (Beady Eye) and Noel’s (High Flying Birds) post-Oasis projects a number of times (alas, that day when I see both share a stage has yet to arrive). But from this position of having seen them both perform on numerous occasions, I find myself able to distinctly tell the difference between one of their good shows and, well, one of their shite ones.
