Bay Sea and League GuantanamoCadets attended a special Sea Cadet boot camp at Phillips Dive Park Nov. 27-29. Eleven cadets participated in the three-day event where they built skills in basic hygiene, marksmanship, swim qualifications, physical fitness training and watchstanding. "We conducted two drills as part of the training," said Navy Diver 15 Class Brent Roberts, the Cadets' prospective commanding . Cadets went through a fire drill where they were required to muster in different locations and participate in a Navy-style personnel muster. "The whole drill was completed in less than four minutes," said Roberts. Cadets were also required to challenge an intruder while on watch throughout the night. f ft1~oto by Terence Peck "The boot camp was held so the Cadets would be able to complete Senior Chief 's Mate Victor Gonzales, the Guantanamo Bay Sea Cadets' commanding officer, salutes Sea Cadet Seaman Recruit Rhylan Schiltz during the mock boot camp graduation ceremony Nov. 29 outside of the Sea Cadet training See CADETS, page 5 building. the teen population very quickly," McKnight said. "So anything that can get them new experiences and different culture awareness is something I would really like to do." McKnight's new job in Guantanamo Bay is his first after receiving his bachelor's degree in recreation management and outdoor experiential education from Appalachia State University. During his years, he completed two internships with MWR in Sasebo, Japan and in Guantanamo Bay. "I grew up a Navy brat, so I've been involved in the MWR program since I was able to walk," he said. McKnight did not join the military, but felt the need to serve in a different way. "This is my way to give back to the community that fostered my development," he said. "I came up through youth center programs, teen programs and all of these sports." Part of McKnight's ambition is to get the community involved with teen fitness through volunteer programs in alternative sports.
