VMI stands apart from other universities for many reasons, but our Honor Code is by far the most unique feature in our possession. Honor is more than just a word or an empty concept. It is a lifestyle here at the Institute. Our Honor Code is simple: “A Cadet will not Lie, Cheat, Steal, nor Tolerate those who do”. These words constitute the compass that will come to guide your actions over your next four years at the Institute and those extending well beyond this time. You will realize very soon upon your arrival here at the Institute that your word is your bond, and once you sign the Matriculation Book, you will have signed on for a life full of honor, integrity, and commitment.

During your time at VMI, the honorable path will not always be the easiest one to follow. In fact, it may be the hardest, but your adherence to it can, and must, always be achieved. It is your responsibility to hold yourselves to the higher standard that we as cadets of the Virginia Military Institute strive to embody. Stonewall Jackson said that you may be whatever you resolve to be. I hope you resolve to live a life of honor.

That said, I am excited to see you all begin your cadetships this August. Be proud of your accomplishments up to this point and be prepared to embrace the system that will
