Reviews in Brief REVIEWS IN BRIEF Winifred Hughes, The Maniac in the Cellar: Sensation Novels of the 1860s (Princeton University Press, 1980) pp. x + 212. This study contains two general chapters; one each on Charles Reade and Wilkie Collins; one shared by Miss Braddon and Mrs Henry Wood; and a final chapter on 'Influences of the Sensation Novel' which includes a section on Hardy. This last offers a lively discussion of Desperate Remedies, which Professor Hughes finds a 'staggeringly uneven work' and 'an extreme example of the genre' wherein 'the sensation novel finally runs amuck'. She then proceeds to a discussion of the element of melodrama in Hardy's major novels, showing their affinities with popular fiction of the 'sensation' school - for example, the resemblance between the plot of Tess and that of M. E. Braddon's Aurora Floyd. Professor Hughes suggests that Hardy's temperament and outlook found the melodramatic mode con­ genial, and that 'in his hands melodrama becomes the expression of an arbitrary unverse'. Alan Hurst, Hardy: An Illustrated Dictionary (Kaye & Ward, 1980) pp. 215. The bulk of this book consists of an alphabetical list of entries referring to works, characters, places and people connected (sometimes rather tenuously) with Hardy and on such topics as 'Animals', 'Dance' and 'Films'. There are also 140 black and white photographs, some of them not much better than the average holiday snapshot. A typical couple of pages includes about thirty lines on The Well-Beloved, entries on H. G. Wells (on the strength of his review of Jude) and 'Wessex' ('a tousled brown and white Caesar terrier ... '), an aerial view of Wareham and a photograph of the dog's tombstone in the pets' graveyard at Max Gate. Some of the entries are so brief as to be pointless (for example, five lines on 'Diction' 188 Reviews in Brief 189 and the same on Shakespeare). There is also a brief chronology of Hardy's life and a list of characters in the novels. Except in point of price, Mr Hurst's book is in no respect a serious rival to F. B. Pinion's A Hardy Companion, which discharges a similar function with much greater thoroughness. David Lodge, Working with Structuralism: Essays and Reviews on Nineteenth­ and Twentieth-Century Literature (Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1981) pp. xii + 207. Professor Lodge's collection includes three pieces on Hardy that have already appeared in one form or another. 'The Woodlanders: A Darwinian Pastoral Elegy' is an abridged version of his introduction to the New Wessex edition of the novel; and 'Thomas Hardy as a Cinematic Novelist' and 'Pessimism and Fictional Form:Jude the Obscure' are reprinted from the collections of essays recently assembled by, respectively, Lance StJohn Butler and Dale Kramer. C. PETTIT Part One of this article was published in the Autumn 2013 issue. It covered music composed during Hardy’s lifetime. This second article covers music composed since Hardy’s death, coming right up to the present day. The focus is again on music by those composers who wrote operatic and orchestral works, and only mentions song settings of poems, and music in dramatisations for radio and other media, when they were written by featured composers. Hardy’s work is seen to have inspired a wide variety of music, from full-length operas and musicals, via short pieces featuring particular fictional episodes, to ballet music and purely orchestral responses. Hardy-inspired compositions show no sign of reducing in number over the decades. However despite the quantity of music produced and the quality of much of it, there is not the sense in this period that Hardy maintained the kind of universal appeal for composers that was evident during the last two decades of his life. After a successful writing career that included such novels as Far from the Madding Crowd (1874), The Return of the Native (1878), The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886), and Tess of the D’Urbervilles (1891), his last novel, Jude the Obscure (1895) was roundly condemned by the church as immoral. After that, Hardy concentrated on writing poetry. At that time, the English requirement was a double course that represented a third of the year’s curriculum. The required reading novel in the Prose half of the course was The Return of the Native. The poetry selections in the Poetry and Drama half were heavily weighted with Wordsworth but included five or six of Hardy’s poems to represent in part, I suppose, “modern” poetry. I was fortunate to have Gordon (“Pop”) Snider as my English teacher for Grades X through XII at Gordon Bell (the original school at Wolseley and Maryland). Up to that point English classes had involved an interminable run of texts in the “Vitalized English” series that entailed studies of word usage, required 7 readings, and the repetitive study of parts of speech that le� me cold. Snider introduced us to figures of speech in a systematic way in Grade X and from there made literature come alive for me. At the same time, I was completing five years of Latin with W.

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 ABSTRACT This thesis is a critical study of the distinctive qualities and the development of Hill's poetry. It identifies two characteristic features of his work. The first is the pervasive presence of reflexivity. While there is a reflexive element in much poetry, Hill's poems are marked by a sustained scrutiny of their own medium, expressing an intense concern with the moral and intellectual risks of poetic utterance. The second feature is the aspiration to impersonality. This has a direct source in T.S. Eliot's critical writing, but Hill's poetry exhibits a high degree of sophistication in its engagement with this modernist ideal, employing a range of strategies to renegotiate the role of the subject in poetry.

    ENGLISH LITERATURE THOMAS HARDY During the summer, you should choose and read a novel by Thomas Hardy. We can recommend Tess of the d’Urbervilles, Far From the Madding Crowd, The Mayor of Casterbridge, The Woodlanders, Two on a Tower, Jude the Obscure and The Return of the Native but there are others and you can decide. If a novel is too daunting, try a selection of Hardy’s short stories. Start with The Withered Arm and then try The Three Strangers. Read a selection of poems by Hardy including The Darkling Thrush, Domicilium, Neutral Tones, The Ruined Maid, The Tramp Woman’s Tragedy, An August Midnight, The Impercipient, The Man he Killed, Drummer Hodge, and The Convergence of the Twain. Visit the website www.hardysociety.org and read the section About Hardy. Look too at the Resources section and follow some of the links about the novel you are reading and the poetry. If you are really keen, visit the Dorchester Museum, take a walk to Stinsford Church and Hardy’s cottage together with any other local sites that are mentioned in the novels. If you look at the neal.oxborrow.net/Thomas_Hardy/hardyplacenames.htm you will find a comprehensive list. Look at www.imdb.com to consider the different film adaptations. Try www.youtube.com which also has some audio recordings and reviews. Write a 500 word review of the novel or short story giving a very brief synopsis of what it is about and your views about the development of character, setting and plot. .
