It has been prepared by me and me alone. :;"0\0 Abstract The aim of this thesis is to re-evaluate the poetry of Thomas Hardy from an eco­ critical perspective, and in so doing, show how and in what ways Hardy's poetic oeuvre represents a revealing response to the environment, and an important and still relevant comment on humankind's relationship to it. As the Introduction explains in more detail, the thesis concentrates on the verse drama and verse collections published between 1898 and 1909. However, Chapter 1 opens with an eco-critical analysis of Hardy's earliest surviving poem, 'Domicilium', written 1857-60; the Chapter develops into a discussion of the origins of eco-criticism as a theoretical approach with a political edge. Chapter 2 discusses the complex Victorian concept of 'Nature', which shaped Hardy's own response to the environment. Chapter 3 engages with Hardy's career as a novel writer, and notes the way in which it informs his later poetry. Chapter 4 extends the eco-critical analysis to Hardy's poetry, focusing on Wessex Poems, his first verse collection. Although short, the collection shows how Hardy was already shaping his own poetic sense of the natural world. This theme is developed in Chapter 5, on Poems of the Past and Present, a collection notable for a series of poems with a bio-centric focus on the natural world in general and bird life in particular. Chapter 6 deals with The Dynasts, a retelling of the Napoleonic Wars through which Hardy dramatized his belief that all life on earth is connected by the workings of the 'Immanent Will'. Chapter 7 discusses Time's Laughingstocks, Hardy's bleakest reading of the human condition. In particular, it concentrates on Wessex Poems, Poems of the Past and Present, The Dynasts, and Time's Laughingstocks. However, it opens with a discussion of Hardy's earliest attempt at poetry, 'Domicilium', written 1857-60, and concludes by analysing another individual poem, The Convergence of the Twain', which was written and published in 1912. Behind Hardy's poetic response to the natural world - his eco-poetic - lies a powerful, parallel process of change.

C. PETTIT Part One of this article was published in the Autumn 2013 issue. It covered music composed during Hardy’s lifetime. This second article covers music composed since Hardy’s death, coming right up to the present day. The focus is again on music by those composers who wrote operatic and orchestral works, and only mentions song settings of poems, and music in dramatisations for radio and other media, when they were written by featured composers. Hardy’s work is seen to have inspired a wide variety of music, from full-length operas and musicals, via short pieces featuring particular fictional episodes, to ballet music and purely orchestral responses. Hardy-inspired compositions show no sign of reducing in number over the decades. However despite the quantity of music produced and the quality of much of it, there is not the sense in this period that Hardy maintained the kind of universal appeal for composers that was evident during the last two decades of his life. After a successful writing career that included such novels as Far from the Madding Crowd (1874), The Return of the Native (1878), The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886), and Tess of the D’Urbervilles (1891), his last novel, Jude the Obscure (1895) was roundly condemned by the church as immoral. At that time, the English requirement was a double course that represented a third of the year’s curriculum. The required reading novel in the Prose half of the course was The Return of the Native. The poetry selections in the Poetry and Drama half were heavily weighted with Wordsworth but included five or six of Hardy’s poems to represent in part, I suppose, “modern” poetry. I was fortunate to have Gordon (“Pop”) Snider as my English teacher for Grades X through XII at Gordon Bell (the original school at Wolseley and Maryland). Up to that point English classes had involved an interminable run of texts in the “Vitalized English” series that entailed studies of word usage, required 7 readings, and the repetitive study of parts of speech that le� me cold. "I introduced Hardy here," he boasted. He began by pub­ lishing Hardy's Under the Greenwood Tree in 1873-without Hardy's knowledge or permission-and he therefore had little just ground for complaint when, on June 20, 1875, the New York Times began the publication of a new Hardy novel about which Holt had received no information.
