  • Cine-Excess 13 Delegate Abstracts
Cine-Excess 13 Delegate Abstracts Alice Haylett Bryan From Inside to The Hills Have Eyes: French Horror Directors at Home and Abroad In an interview for the website The Digital Fix, French director Pascal Laugier notes the lack of interest in financing horror films in France. He states that after the international success of his second film Martyrs (2008) he received only one proposition from a French producer, but between 40 and 50 propositions from America: “Making a genre film in France is a kind of emotional roller-coaster” explains Laugier, “sometimes you feel very happy to be underground and trying to do something new and sometimes you feel totally desperate because you feel like you are fighting against everyone else.” This is a situation that many French horror directors have echoed. For all the talk of the new wave of French horror cinema, it is still very hard to find funding for genre films in the country, with the majority of French directors cutting their teeth using independent production companies in France, before moving over to helm mainstream, bigger-budget horrors and thrillers in the USA. This paper will provide a critical overview of the renewal in French horror cinema since the turn of the millennium with regard to this situation, tracing the national and international productions and co-productions of the cycle’s directors as they navigate the divide between indie horror and the mainstream. Drawing on a number of case studies including the success of Alexandre Aja, the infamous Hellraiser remake that never came into fruition, and the recent example of Coralie Fargeat’s Revenge, it will explore the narrative, stylistic and aesthetic choices of these directors across their French and American productions.

  • “Loving and Cruel, All at the Same Time” Girlhood Identity in the Craft
“Loving and Cruel, All at the Same Time” Girlhood Identity in The Craft Emily Chandler a ABSTRACT The teen horror film The Craft (1996) has remained a cult classic with girl audi- ences for two decades. Scholarship about the film has focused on its negative rep- resentation of girls’ friendships, sexuality, and desire for power. In this article, I honor the significance of girl culture by accounting for The Craft’s appeal to girl audiences. I argue that The Craft’s relevance to girls arises from its subversion of teen film tropes. The Craft explores adolescent girls’ fear of isolation by depicting a mentally ill teenager who draws strength and happiness from the company of her friends, and becomes depressed when they oust her. By flouting the imperative for adolescent girl protagonists to be white, middle-class, mentally healthy, and normatively bodied, The Craft portrays girls’ desire for understanding over the pursuit of so-called popularity, girls’ anger arising from marginalization, and girls’ exploiting of friendship as a weapon. KEYWORDS aggression, friendship, horror, niceness, teen film b Introduction In Andrew Fleming’s teen horror film The Craft (1996), a middle-aged bus driver drops four teenage girls in the middle of nowhere, warning them to “watch out for those weirdos.” Unbeknown to him, these girls are witches, poised to realize their powers. Their ringleader retorts, “We are the weirdos, mister,” giving the driver an unsettling grin as the doors of the bus close. At the opening of the film, Nancy (Fairuza Balk), Rochelle (Rachel True) and Bonnie (Neve Campbell), misfit girls at a Catholic high school in Los Angeles, are experimenting unsuccessfully with witchcraft derived from Manon, a nature deity.

He was Japanese American Museum. It was a strange place to see punk reading an issue of the zine Nervy Girl. He told me that I’d inspired him to AA bands. Their sets were incredibly short. It was an amazing show, pick up a copy of the zine. Since I’d never hear of it, I asked him what he anyway. After the show, Todd spotted The Brat’s guitarist walking around meant. He told me that all my talk of a media monopoly and the need for with copies of the only record they’ve released. I looked at Todd to make independent voices to balance out the mainstream corporate voices got to sure I wasn’t hallucinating. Because I have to admit, I’ve dreamed of him. He was in Hollywood and saw the zine and never would’ve picked it seeing this record in record stores so many times without actually seeing it up if not for me. He felt embarrassed purchasing it, he said, but now he that I’d begun to believe that the record only existed in dreams (and was glad he did. “Have you heard about all these women getting killed in Jimmy Alvarado’s record collection).
