  • Roots Radical – Place, Power and Practice in Punk Entrepreneurship Sarah Louise Drakopoulou Dodd
Roots radical – Place, power and practice in punk entrepreneurship Sarah Louise Drakopoulou Dodd The significance continues to grow of scholarship that embraces critical and contextualized entrepreneurship, seeking rich explorations of diverse entrepreneurship contexts. Following these influences, this study explores the potentialized context of punk entrepreneurship. The Punk Rock band Rancid has a 20-year history of successfully creating independent musical and related creative enterprises from the margins of the music industry. The study draws on artefacts, interviews and videos created by and around Rancid to identify and analyse this example of marginal, alternative entrepreneurship. A three-part analytic frame was applied to analysing these artefacts. Place is critical to Rancid’s enterprise, grounding the band socially, culturally, geographically and politically. Practice also plays an important role with Rancid’s activities encompassing labour, making music, movement and human interactions. The third, and most prevalent, dimension of alterity is that of power which includes data related to dominance, subordination, exclusion, control and liberation. Rancid’s entrepreneurial story is depicted as cycles, not just a linear journey, but following more complicated paths – from periphery to centre, and back again; returning to roots, whilst trying to move forwards too; grounded in tradition but also radically focused on dramatic change. Paradox, hybridized practices, and the significance of marginal place as a rich resource also emerged from the study. Keywords: entrepreneurship; social construction; punk rock; paradox; marginality; periphery Special thanks are due to all the punks and skins who have engaged with my reading of the Rancid story, and given me so much support and feedback along the way, especially Rancid’s drummer, Branden Steineckert, Jesse from Machete Manufacturing, Kostis, Tassos (Rancid Punx Athens Crew) and Panayiotis.

  • Intro Chris Hansen: Your Initial Thoughts on What Has
[intro Chris Hansen: Your initial thoughts on what has surfaced in the last several months on Dahvie Vanity? How do you characterize what you’ve heard and what do you think of it all? Jeffree Star: So, when I quit music, I quit everything, meaning I didn’t talk any of these people ever again, until this date. It wasn’t shocking since Dahvie’s always been horrible. I wanna answer everyone’s questions today. But I was happy that people are finally getting a voice, because back in the day I don’t think a lot of people took things like this serious. And everything that he’s been accused of, people back in the day did not take it as serious as they do now, which is so horrible. So I’m glad that things are really coming to light. At the end of the day, the goal is for him to be sitting in a prison cell, so I’m ready to dive in, you know what I mean? CH: Well, take me back to those days in the mid-to-late 2005, 2010, 2012… what was that music scene like and what was happening in it? JS: It was very punk rock and what I mean by that it was a very crass and offensive culture, whether it was electronic music or dance, we were in this- I called this the “myspace culture” cause that was kind of the timeframe. And things were just very different than how they are now. It was very rock’n’roll, we did a lot of things to be offensive and me and Dahvie first met because I believe he was a fan of me.

  • Cine-Excess 13 Delegate Abstracts
Cine-Excess 13 Delegate Abstracts Alice Haylett Bryan From Inside to The Hills Have Eyes: French Horror Directors at Home and Abroad In an interview for the website The Digital Fix, French director Pascal Laugier notes the lack of interest in financing horror films in France. He states that after the international success of his second film Martyrs (2008) he received only one proposition from a French producer, but between 40 and 50 propositions from America: “Making a genre film in France is a kind of emotional roller-coaster” explains Laugier, “sometimes you feel very happy to be underground and trying to do something new and sometimes you feel totally desperate because you feel like you are fighting against everyone else.” This is a situation that many French horror directors have echoed. For all the talk of the new wave of French horror cinema, it is still very hard to find funding for genre films in the country, with the majority of French directors cutting their teeth using independent production companies in France, before moving over to helm mainstream, bigger-budget horrors and thrillers in the USA. This paper will provide a critical overview of the renewal in French horror cinema since the turn of the millennium with regard to this situation, tracing the national and international productions and co-productions of the cycle’s directors as they navigate the divide between indie horror and the mainstream. Drawing on a number of case studies including the success of Alexandre Aja, the infamous Hellraiser remake that never came into fruition, and the recent example of Coralie Fargeat’s Revenge, it will explore the narrative, stylistic and aesthetic choices of these directors across their French and American productions.
