What made God’s creation of man and woman more beautiful than the rest of His creation? Before you knew Christ, how would you describe yourself?

What does God see in us once we’re “born again”? What about now? Something beautiful?

How has He made you new?

Modern Worship Isn’t Just About Being Cool

By Russell Evans, Senior Pastor at Planetshakers in Melbourne, Australia

Since we live in a time when everything is based on “image” – we need to make sure that our wor- ship services are more than just cool replicas of an MTV show. I totally believe in being progressive, modern, and cool –but if that’s what defines our worship services, we’re missing the mark.

Jesus actually gave us a great model for com- munication and interaction. He was amazing at speaking the language of His audience. When He spoke with fishermen, He spoke about fish; when He spoke to tax collectors, He spoke about the issues pertaining to them. This is a powerful picture of worship services. We need to speak the language of the audience with which we are com- municating.

I believe the church should be ahead of the world when it comes to relevance. Daniel was head and shoulders above his peers in under- standing and speaking to the culture. He knew Babylonian thoroughly and could communicate it brilliantly. But, he was more than relevant – he was prophetic. He interpreted a dream for a nation and a generation; in other words, he gave them an encounter with God.

Coming back to Jesus, He spoke the language but most importantly, He gave those who came into contact with Him an encounter with God. That’s what our modern worship services should do: create an environment where people can wor- ship in spirit and truth. It’s not either/or, it’s both.

A modern worship experience should have all the elements that communicate the message in a contemporary way. The lights, the sounds, and the look are all important to communicate what we believe. Many people have come to our church and said the production is off the charts. As good as that is, we also want to communicate we are passionate about God. Prayer and passion all help create an environment to experience and encoun- ter God’s presence.

People won’t necessarily remember the lights and screens, but they will remember the encounter they had with God. After all, that’s what worship is all about –encountering God.
