American Buddhists: Enlightenment and Encounter
CHAPTER FO U R American Buddhists: Enlightenment and Encounter ★ he Buddha’s Birthday is celebrated for weeks on end in Los Angeles. TMore than three hundred Buddhist temples sit in this great city fac- ing the Pacific, and every weekend for most of the month of May the Buddha’s Birthday is observed somewhere, by some group—the Viet- namese at a community college in Orange County, the Japanese at their temples in central Los Angeles, the pan-Buddhist Sangha Council at a Korean temple in downtown L.A. My introduction to the Buddha’s Birthday observance was at Hsi Lai Temple in Hacienda Heights, just east of Los Angeles. It is said to be the largest Buddhist temple in the Western hemisphere, built by Chinese Buddhists hailing originally from Taiwan and advocating a progressive Humanistic Buddhism dedicated to the pos- itive transformation of the world. In an upscale Los Angeles suburb with its malls, doughnut shops, and gas stations, I was about to pull over and ask for directions when the road curved up a hill, and suddenly there it was— an opulent red and gold cluster of sloping tile rooftops like a radiant vision from another world, completely dominating the vista. The ornamental gateway read “International Buddhist Progress Society,” the name under which the temple is incorporated, and I gazed up in amazement. This was in 1991, and I had never seen anything like it in America. The entrance took me first into the Bodhisattva Hall of gilded images and rich lacquerwork, where five of the great bodhisattvas of the Mahayana Buddhist tradition receive the prayers of the faithful. -
Choice Readings for Every Day in the Year, Selected [By
CHOICE READINGS EVERY DAY IN THE YEAR. SELECTED FROM THE WORKS OF Key. T. DE WITT TA.LMAGE, D.D. BROOKLYN, NKW YORK.- »>€««?^- LONDON : R. D. DICKINSON, FARRINGDON STREET. 1875. 1 To REV. G. R. HAIR, (Professor of Theology in Wyoming Seminary, Pa.) WHOSE INSTRUCTIONS HAVE GREATLY AIDED Mil IN MY PREPARATION FOR THE MINISTRY, THIS WORK IS RESPECTFULLY DEDICATED. J. V. D. S preface. HAVING for a long time desired to see Mr. Tal- mage's best thoughts collected and put in a work of this kind, and believing that such a work would better the condition of mankind, I undertook the pleasant task of compiling it. " Daily Thoughts," has been prepared for daily readings. It consists of choice selections from the writings of Mr. Talmage. The work is published with his approval. I send it forth with the earnest hope that many, by its daily 'perusal, may be encouraged, strength ened and blessed. J. V. D. S. JANUARY FIRST. JANUARY FIRST. EATFY NEW YEAR. "Rejoice evermore." — i Thess. v. 16. TO-DAY we bow out a visitor from our door who had taken up his abode with us for a year, and to-morrow we wel come a stranger who stood on our threshold awaiting admit tance. There is something marvellous in the readiness with which we turn our backs on the old year and extend our hands to the new year — as if the past were nothing and the future were everything. And yet, in truth, the past is all we have as a possession. In it alone do we find our memories, to it alone have we imparted a portion of our being. -
T Miss Shows of January
Mike D’s Top Five Can’t Miss Shows of January 1. Sun, Jan 18: Balance and Composure, Ovlov, Wargames; $13 advance / $15 day of; 8pm doors / 8:30pm show; All ages; The Met, 1005 Main St, Pawtucket. Finally Doylestown, Penn.’s Balance and Composure return to Rhode Island. The band, while often grouped in with the new explosion of emo and pop punk acts like Title Fight and Tigers Jaw, stand out by bringing a great understanding the soft / loud aspect of the bands that made alternative rock exciting in the 1990s like Nirvana, Jawbreaker and Sunny Day Real Estate. Their last full length, Things We Think We Are Missing reminds me of another favorite record that was influenced by similar acts, Cave In’s 2000 release Jupiter. Connecticut’s Ovlov also have a feel of the ’90s indie revival to them, reminding me of a punkier Sebadoh with touches of Lou Barlow’s previous band Dinosaur Jr. Westport, Mass.’s Wargames are also on the verge of becoming a national act. Check them out before they leave for their European tour this spring. 2. Sat, Jan 24: The Copacetics (CD Release), Riki Rocksteady, The Pomps, Out Of System Transfer; $10; 8pm; All ages; Firehouse 13, 41 Central St, Providence. The Copacetics’ new self-titled CD is a fantastic showcase of their talent — a perfect recording that captures what makes seeing them such a fun experience. An eight-piece rocksteady ska band that perfectly blends all the musicians for a cohesive and rewarding dance party. Lead track, “Summer’s Coming,” takes me away to a place that isn’t this miserable New England winter. -

STITCHED SOUND Issue #20 MAT MUSTO Almost Hero, Scream Infamy, The Krays, The Shivers, and more! 1 Fires upon fires. Not good. Yeah, so many of you have probably heard Stitched Sound is an online magazine that Issue 20 of the disastrous fire that happened in Slave brings you the latest news about upcoming Lake. It’s such a pity, and being from Alberta, I and distinguished bands. We do this through loved Slave Lake, it was just gorgeous and interviews, journalism, reviews, updates, and most of the people I encountered there were photography. Keeping the mood light and fun nothing but nice. There was also another fire is something we love to do. Whether it's up by Fort McMurray that spread insanely fast through an intriguing interview, simple update, and wide. Then today, while I was driving home or complete issue, we strive to bring you news from school, what else do I see but solid grey and updates about the fast growing music STITCHED SOUND smoke bursting up from a neighborhood? It’s scene today. crazy, and it puts a downer on the whole summer-time, bon fire thing. Plus many people Cynthia Lam have lost their homes and Anyway, that was a complete irrelevant subject, but it’s something that has been happening lately. This issue is pretty short, our shortest so far, but it’s short & sweet! Featuring the most amazing Mat Musto on the cover, and interviews with some great bands. I’m sorry that this issue is shorter, but with finals and school coming to a close, things are geting a bit stressful. -
