1 PLAYING AGAINST the ROLES SCENE 1 Scene 1
PLAYING AGAINST THE ROLES SCENE 1 Scene 1. The roof of Daniel and Estrella’s old apartment complex. DANIEL: Estrella! Why did you want to meet here? We’re going to miss the party! ESTRELLA: Can you believe how much this place has changed? DANIEL: I don’t even recognize it. ESTRELLA: It’s all so… white. It used to be filled with smells and sounds and people. DANIEL: Like the sounds of my terrible violin playing. ESTRELLA: I remember the smells that came from those windows. Mi abuela cooking (She pauses and smells the air) mole and fresh tortillas, and elote, and capirotada. DANIEL and ESTRELLA: and that awful Posole. They both make a face. DANIEL: We played for hours. ESTRELLA: With my Barbies. DANIEL: They were rich. ESTRELLA: and they had a swimming pool and like 10 kids and they always fought. DANIEL: Like my mom and dad. Before he left… ESTRELLA: but remember… we would run away and sneak out. DANIEL: And just lay up here and just look at the stars. They sit in silence remembering the past. DANIEL: You know… in a new place, you can be anyone you want. ESTRELLA: Easy for you to say, ”Dannie Beckerman football star.” (She laughs to herself) DANIEL: Speaking of… that party. You promised you’d come. ESTRELLA: I know. Just one more minute. 1 Scene 2 Scene 1. Friday Night. A teenage house party. We hear bumpin music, perhaps something by Drake or Kanye. DANIEL AND ESTRELLA enter the party. There are groups of mostly McGregor High School students scattered about the room laughing and talking loudly. -

Dorf, Ph.D. April 2020 Traditional Funk: An Ethnographic, Historical, and Practical Study of Funk Music in Dayton, Ohio Honors Thesis Caleb G. Vanden Eynden Department: Music Advisor: Samuel N. Dorf, Ph.D. April 2020 Abstract Recognized nationally as the funk capital of the world, Dayton, Ohio takes credit for birthing important funk groups (i.e. Ohio Players, Zapp, Heatwave, and Lakeside) during the 1970s and 80s. Through a combination of ethnographic and archival research, this paper offers a pedagogical approach to Dayton funk, rooted in the styles and works of the city’s funk legacy. Drawing from fieldwork with Dayton funk musicians completed over the summer of 2019 and pedagogical theories of including black music in the school curriculum, this paper presents a pedagogical model for funk instruction that introduces the ingredients of funk (instrumentation, form, groove, and vocals) in order to enable secondary school music programs to create their own funk rooted in local history. -

A Sequential Theory of Decentralization: Latin American Cases in Comparative Perspective TULIA G
American Political Science Review Vol. 99, No. 3 August 2005 A Sequential Theory of Decentralization: Latin American Cases in Comparative Perspective TULIA G. FALLETI University of Pennsylvania oth advocates and critics of decentralization assume that decentralization invariably increases the power of subnational governments. However, a closer examination of the consequences of B decentralization across countries reveals that the magnitude of such change can range from substantial to insignificant. In this article, I propose a sequential theory of decentralization that has three main characteristics: (1) it defines decentralization as a process, (2) it takes into account the territorial interests of bargaining actors, and (3) it incorporates policy feedback effects. I argue that the sequencing of different types of decentralization (fiscal, administrative, and political) is a key determinant of the evolution of intergovernmental balance of power. I measure this evolution in the four largest Latin American countries and apply the theory to the two extreme cases (Colombia and Argentina). I show that, contrary to commonly held opinion, decentralization does not necessarily increase the power of governors and mayors. oes decentralization always increase the power Moving beyond the fiscal arena, the decentralization of governors and mayors? Racial Gatekeeping in Country & Hip-Hop Music By Cervanté Pope Student ID #: 947767021 Portland State University Pope 2 Introduction In mass communication, gatekeeping refers to how information is edited, shaped and controlled in efforts to construct a “social reality” (Shoemaker, Eichholz, Kim, & Wrigley, 2001). Gatekeeping has expanded into other fields throughout the years, with its concepts growing more and more easily applicable in many other aspects of life. One way it presents itself is in regard to racial inclusion and equality, and despite the headway we’ve seemingly made as a society, we are still lightyears away from where we need to be. Because of this, the concept of cultural property has become even more paramount, as a means for keeping one’s cultural history and identity preserved. -

Thesis, the Songs of 10 Rappers Were Analyzed
ABSTRACT Get Rich or Die Tryin’: A Semiotic Approach to the Construct of Wealth in Rap Music Kristine Ann Davis, M.A. Mentor: Sara J. Stone, Ph.D. For the past 30 years, rap music has made its way into the mainstream of America, taking an increasingly prominent place in popular culture, particularly for youth, its main consumers. This thesis looks at wealth through the lens of semiotics, an important component of critical/cultural theory, using a hermeneutical analysis of 11 rap songs, spanning the last decade of rap music to find signification and representation of wealth in the rap song lyrics. The research finds three important themes of wealth - relationship between wealth and the opposite sex, wealth that garners respect from other people, and wealth as a signifier for “living the good life” - and five signifiers of wealth – money, cars, attire, liquor, and bling. So You've Been Musically Shamed
WILLIAM CHENG Dartmouth College Email: [email protected] So You’ve Been Musically Shamed ABSTRACT In July 2014, an anonymous source leaked the raw audio of Britney Spears’s confessional ballad “Alien.” Haters pounced on this star’s denuded voice, gleefully seizing on the viral artifact as a smoking gun for Spears’s deficits and for the pop industry’s artistic fakeries more broadly. My paper situates this flashpoint of Spears-shaming within late-capitalist archives of public humiliation, cyberleaks, and the paternalistic scrutiny of women’s bodies and voices. KEYWORDS: critical theory, media studies, popular music A marketplace has emerged where public humiliation is a commodity and shame is an industry. How is the money made? Clicks. The more shame, the more clicks. – monica lewinsky1 “Poor Britney Spears” is not the beginning of a sentence you hear often uttered in my household. – tony hoagland, “poor britney spears,” beginning of the poem2 In the summer of 2014, the internet sprang a musical leak. Suddenly circulating on YouTube was a video featuring the allegedly raw, non-Auto-Tuned sounds of Brit- 3 ney Spears singing her new album track “Alien.” Spears’s voice in this recording was noticeably off-key and off-kilter, like some abject artifact meant to be overwritten, for- gotten, abandoned on the cutting room floor. In the video’s comment threads, view- ers’ strident pronouncements of aching ears and melting brains swirled in a chorus of mockery. Haters pounced on the star’s denuded voice and offered it as airtight 1.
