5 THE HOLIDAY REGION THE “FANTASTIC FOUR“ The Holiday Destination and its Regions. Four regions greatly differ from each other. With all their differences they create the “fantastic four“ yet continue to be one entity: the holiday destination of Bernkastel-Kues.

LOCATION

THE MOSELLE VILLAGES

Since time immemorial the Moselle and the Moselle valley has been the main arterial road of the state. People have settled in this location since the Stone Age, mainly in the proximity of the mouths of streams and small rivers with fresh water. Here, there was always through traffi c. Merchants and soldiers prevented stagnation and always forced people to come to terms with new situations. Celts, Romans, Franconians, French, Prussians, Americans and the guests today brought their convictions, ideas and behaviours along. They shaped the race of people in the Moselle, who fundamentally did not refuse the new but confronted foreigners openly. Since the Romans brought wine to the Moselle, winegrowing and wine trade have become the EXPLORING dominating economic factors. One was and still is dependent on establishing contact with others. The mild climate supports the culture, in which music sets the tone rather than enforcing pretensions to power. Winegrowing, particularly in the steep THE HOLIDAY REGION slopes of the Moselle is a hard job. The people know a certain prosperity does not just fall into one‘s lap. The “county“ is a world of its own. The affi liation to a long lost former county has, to this Your booking hotline +49(0)6531-500195 day, had an impact on the self-conception and the strong self-confi dence of the people of the [email protected] county. Originally, the county included the municipals of Veldenz, Andel, , Burgen, Gornhausern and Mülheim. It is accessible from Mülheim: you drive to Veldenz through a wide picturesque valley which is shaped by winegrowing, meadows, orchards and fi elds. Next to Veldenz which is equal in beauty to the Moselle villages, there are in the wide meadow and vineyard landscape of the Moselle high plateau. “Castles located on the most beautiful cul-de-sac of the Middle Moselle“ and because of its 19 bridges the “Small Venice of the Middle Moselle“ is what this remote place which is valued by hikers has been named by tourists. When you drive from Veldenz on to the Serpentinenstraße up into Hunsrück you will reach on a plateau. 6 3 THE MOSELLE-HUNSRÜCK

A striking contrast programme to the Moselle is the Hunsrück. Behind Bernkastel, the road winds up in nar- row loops up towards the wooded mountain slope. When arriving at the top, the forest opens up and bears a hilly Ürzig open landscape which is only occasionally separated in Röm. THE CITY OF BERNKASTEL-KUES

It goes without saying that the accredited focal point in Papiermühle this section of the Moselle valley is the twin city Bern- kastel-Kues. With 7500 inhabitants it is by far the biggest city of the region. Today, the small ancient core from Bernkastel around the church is shaped by the colourful hustle and bustle of tourists. Expansion possibilities are only manageable on the Kues side and in the past few years these have been made use of. Bernkastel-Kues is a growing city. Tourism, accounting, trade, small and medium-sized companies and last but not least the reha- bilitation centre on the plateau above the city create an extremely lively, small universe of its own.2

7 THE TOWN

Where the vineyards reach all the way to the edge of the town and wine is an integral part of people‘s lives - that‘s where the boundaries to other worlds of enjoyment are fluid. The rendezvous with the half-timbered buildings, which is celebrating a happy revival in Bernkastel-Kues like in no other town on the Moselle, is probably the most obvious temptation. You can‘t get enough of the bountiful splendour and diversity that was developed here by the builders 500 years ago. The same is true for the many pinnacles that perkily rise into the sky just as imaginatively and that mean that all spectators can‘t help but have their heads in the clouds. But please beware: Many an attractive view can be missed if you‘re on the ground floor. Whether you‘d rather rummage and browse, find factual information, compare prices or go bargain hunting, whether you‘re looking for something trendy for yourself or a souvenir for grandma - Bernkastel-Kues has something for everyone, from shopping directly to stopping off for a drink. And vice versa. The region has many bars and eateries to choose from.

LIVELY VIEWPOINTS

Whether you love good food or follow a healthy diet, whether you like window shopping, collecting souvenirs or going on a bargain hunt, the hotels and restaurants, shops and retailers have everything you‘re looking for, from the upmarket to the fresh and the unusual to the extraordinary.

Landshut castle is the town‘s landmark and name giver. This is because there was a fort in its place in Roman times, the princastellum - or “fi rst fort“ in English - which secured the Moselle as the natural border to the neighbouring province of Belgica.

St. Michael‘s well, Doctor-Weinbrunnen well, Bärenbrunnen well: the wells of the town of Bernkastel-Kues are a vibrant part of its sights and special attractions.

10 The town‘s most famous son,

Nikolaus von Kues, or Nicolaus Cusanus in its Latinised form, was born in 1401 in Kues as the son of the wealthy fisherman Hennen Cryfftz. After graduating from Heidelberg university, he earned a doctorate in law in Padua, after which he studied philosophy and theology in Cologne. As a universally educated lawyer, philosopher, theologian and mathe- matician, Cusanus was one of the first humanists on the threshold of the modern era. Cusanus played a significant role in church politics, with an illustrious career as a cardinal, papal legate, prince-bishop of Brixen and vicar general in Rome. He died in 1464 in Todi/Umbrien and bequeathed his birth town a truly outstanding cultural asset: the St. Nikolaus-Hospital. The chapel and cloister are among the most important Gothic buildings on the Moselle. It is one of the oldest old people‘s and nursing homes in and accommodates the library of Cusanus, one of the best and best preserved private libraries of the late Middle Ages. It‘s no surprise then that Bernkastel-Kues even has a university today: At the Cusanus University you can study economics and philosophy, which Nikolaus von Kues would be delighted about.

It is the new star among the country‘s hiking trails and has been awarded the titles “quality trail wonderful Germany“ and “Leading Quality Trail - Best of Europe“: the Moselsteig trail. Six of its 24 stages take you right through the middle of the Bernkastel-Kues holiday region. With a total length of 365 kilometres, it is not only one of the longest long- distance hiking trails in Germany, it is also among the most varied.

The sun knows no pity this afternoon and is burning down on our heads. The blazing star doesn‘t care that we have already been hiking all day hike through forests, fi elds and vineyards. Fifteen minutes ago we saw the church steeple for the fi rst time and now more and more houses of the next Moselle village are coming into view. We are approaching civilisation, and that‘s just as well, because it‘s been a while since we had our last refreshment on the viewing platform. We arrive in the village, walk past the time-honoured half-timbered houses, and there it is: we have spotted our destination. We fi nd a shady place on the terrace of an inviting wine tavern, hidden away in a courtyard. Unfortunately, the tavern is closed. We are about to give up and get back on our feet when miraculously the wife of the vintner appears and opens up the tavern for us, serving us cold water and refreshing wine on this hot day. The people are so warm here! That‘s what we loved about the Bernkastel-Kues hiking region, apart from, of course, the spectacular views of the valley, the woods and the mountains. The fact that we even managed to fi nd this jewel on the map was due to the many reports that appeared in spring 2015
