    Die Entersburg bei Hontheim Bei mittelalterlichen Burganlagen treten häufiger auch ältere, römische oder gar vorrömische Siedlungsspuren zutage. Doch nur selten lassen sich, wie im Falle der Entersburg bei Hontheim (Krs. Bemkastel-W ittlich), die Reste mehre­ rer, zeitlich bis zu sieben Jahrhunderte auseinanderliegender Wehranlagen nach- weisen. Jene haben sich dort nicht zuletzt deshalb erhalten, weil die jeweils jün­ gere Befestigung nie auf den Mauerresten einer älteren errichtet und der Umfang bzw. die Innenfläche von Mal zu Mal erheblich verkleinert wurde, woraus sich für den Archäologen ein äußerst glücklicher Umstand ergab. Die Entersburg hegt in einem Seitental der Mosel 2 km nordwestlich von Bad Bertrich, noch auf der Gemarkung Hontheim, unmittelbar an der Grenze des Re­ gierungsbezirkes Trier. Der Platz, ein nahezu unzugänglicher, rund 250 m langer, bis zu 130 m breiter und 60 m hoher Bergsporn bot die idealen Voraussetzungen für eine Wehranlage. Während ihn auf drei Seiten der Üßbach von den angrenzen­ den Bergen abschnürt, machen an der vierten Seite im Süden, der einzigen Ver­ bindung mit dem Hontheimer Plateau, ein schmaler, m ehrfach durchbrochener Felsgrat sowie bis zu 35 m hohe Felswände jeden Zugang unmöglich. Obwohl kleinere Untersuchungen schon in der Mitte des letzten Jahrhunderts von Johann Ost durchgeführt wurden, hielt noch Paul Steiner (Trierer Zeitschr. 8, 1938, 137) die Entersburg für ein schönes Beispiel einer mittelalterlichen Dynastenburg und schloß eine römische Besiedlung des Bergspoms ausdrücklich aus. Bei den Grabungen des Rhein. Landesmuseums in den Jahren 1978/79 zeigte sich recht bald, daß die Untersuchungen, die umfangreicheren Raubgra­ bungen entgegenwirken sollten, über die Gipfelfläche hinaus ausgedehnt werden mußten.
