GOD’S MERCY: A GREAT LIGHT OF LOVE AND TENDERNESS

In preparation for the launching of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, Francis in his homily in Paraguay on July 12, 2015 said in referring to the message of Jesus, “Jesus does not send them (His disciples) out as men of influence, landlords, officials armed with rules and regulations. Instead, He makes them see that the Christian journey is simply about changing hearts. One’s own heart first of all, and then helping to transform the hearts of others. It is about learning to live differently, under a different law, with different rules.”

The main point of the Holy Year of Mercy (December 8, 2015 -November 20, 2016) is that God is merciful towards us. And we too should learn to be merciful. Pope Francis has awakened the world to the need for mercy, and urges each of us to trav- el the path of mercy.

How do we become a person of mercy? We become more merciful when we begin to respond to people in need, see the world and our place in it differently, live life from the perch of mercy and away from our own center. In short we become linked to Jesus in His Heart, and see the world as a place to be transformed, if only a little bit by how we live each day.” – Msgr. Hendricks

The Year of Mercy seems a perfect time for people to “Come Home.” Many people left the Church because they felt unwel- comed. They felt the Church had many structures that occasionally make people feel unwanted and unaccepted. Too often problems or concerns or issues were treated in a purely bureaucratic way which only pushed people away and very little, if any, mercy was shown. In this first week of Advent we light the candle of HOPE. So often we hit those places in our lives when the road ahead seems to be filled only with loss and stress weighs us down with hopelessness. We lose a sense of di- rection and purpose and we just begin to drift. Suddenly, we begin to realize that we have become indifferent to life, to self, to others and to God. This is when God’s greatest desire is to shower us with mercy and hope. We hope that anyone who has left or feels themselves drifting will come back to receive and give mercy.

NEXT WEEK: WHY SHOULD I COME HOME TO ST. BRIGID’S?
