This Common Threads newsletter looks Celebrating back on our last 30 years as a parish. So of many of you are new to St. Brigid of Kildare and don’t know the journey we traveled to Parish’s become the parish we are today. Our first 30-year History parish Mass back in 1987 was celebrated in a barn, but we now worship in a spectacular church that has become a landmark in our Community — the pride of its members and a highlight of the Columbus Diocese. Our Parish Education Center began as the dream of Bishop Griffin, Msgr. Enke and a handful of parishioners, and is now home to what is arguably the best preschool-eighth grade school and the leading diocesan religious education program.

Our growth in membership (from 600 to 3,400 families) and in facilities has been impressive, but even more important is the ever-growing involvement, commit- ment and most recently hospitality shown by our parishioners. Our parishion- ers have never been content to rest on their laurels — we have continued to grow and excel. It is exciting to think about what our parish will look like over the next 30 years. We thank our dedicated parishioners who have worked so diligently in countless capacities and contributed their time, talent and treasure to build our St. Brigid of Kildare Parish into the strong Catholic community is has become.

Please help us continue our 30-year legacy by bringing your talents to St. Brigid of Kildare. How will you use your time and talents to glorify God? In Ephesians 4:11-12, it tells us to reflect and give our talents, “And he gave some as apostles, others as prophets, others as evangelists, others as pastors and teachers, to equip the holy ones for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.”

This newsletter shares information about the ways our ministries and commit- tees impact our parish on a daily basis. Read this newsletter and find a way to become involved. Please join us in celebrating our 30th anniversary and find out more about our active parish family during Ministry Weekend after all five Masses on September 23 and 24, 2017.

Our Parish, 1987 Our Parish, 2017

The Diocese of Columbus acquired 15 acres of land at 7179 Avery Road that was being used by the Dublin Stables as a horse boarding and riding facility. On the property was a farm house, large barn and stable. About 675 founding families, led by Msgr. Enke, began worshiping and meeting at nearby churches and schools.

Our parish celebrated its first Mass on the new land in the stable. Surrounded by animals, parishioners sat on bales of hay for the service.

The newly renovated stable was dedicated by Bishop Griffin as Our Lady of the Gael Chapel (currently Enke Hall).

Saint Brigid of Kildare Church was dedicated on the Feast of the Assumption by Bishop Griffin. The church was a 20,000 square-foot facility with a seating capacity of 1,000.

Saint Brigid of Kildare School, in the new Parish Education Center, opened its doors, welcoming 328 students in grades preschool through sixth. The former Lady of the Gael Chapel was renamed and blessed as Msgr. Paul Enke Hall in June 1998.

Property across the street from the Church — 8.3 acres donated in 1999 by Bishop Griffin— was transformed into “Brigid’s Green” and dedicated on October 24, 2004.

After 17 months of construction, the 15,000 square-foot Pastoral Center was dedicated. The building was designed for meeting, nursery, and support spaces (11,000 sq. feet) and administrative offices (4,000 sq. feet).

The Robert D. Walter Family Gymnasium was dedicated after an addition was completed that added a state of the art gymnasium, bleacher seating for 600, and performance stage.

The church expansion was blessed after a renovation that added 500 additional seats, expanded the “cry room,” updated the restroom facilities, and expanded the gathering area.

Saint Brigid of Kildare School celebrated its 20th anniversary with an outdoor concert and picnic with all 560+ students. In the last 20 years, the school has more than doubled in growth and received two National Blue Ribbon School awards.

Identity Revealed: High School Youth Ministry 2017-2018 It is easy to compartmentalize who you are. At school, you are this person. At home, you are that person. On your team, you are another person. At church, you are someone else. In prayer, you are this way. In friendships, you are that way. But God calls us to wholeness. We are called to be entirely His, always. Imagine what life could be if we always remembered that we are loved and known by God and allowed that to guide us. This coming year, our ministry focus will be Identity Revealed. We will explore our identity in Christ, what it means to be known and loved by God, and how that can transform our lives – if we allow it. Join us this coming school year as we learn and grow through discussion, scripture, theology of the body, guest speakers, sports, service, prayer, and music in an effort to follow Christ, whole- heartedly. Parent Information Gathering: Sunday, August 27, 7-8 PM HS Youth Ministry Kick-Off:Thursday, September 7, 2017, 7:30-9 PM Winter Retreat: February 10-11, 2018 Components of this year’s High School Youth Ministry will include the following (see our webpage for full details): • God Revealed Series (September 7, 14, 21, & 28) • YOU: Life, Love, & Theology of the Body Series, part 1 (October 5, 12, 19, 26, November 2, & 9) • Advent Series (November 30, December 7, 14, & 21) • YOU: Life, Love, & Theology of the Body Series, part 2 (January 4, 11, 18, 25, & 8) • Identity Revealed Winter Retreat (February 10-11, 2018) • Lenten Series (February 15, 22, March 1, 8, 15, & 22) • Christ Series (April 5, 12, 19, 26, & May 3 )

Kevin and I met as students at the University of Dayton and we married in 2003. We moved to central Ohio to continue our medical training and begin a family. After settling into the Dublin/Plain City area in 2010, we were eager to immerse ourselves in a faith community — and fell in love with St. Brigid of Kildare. We treasured our own values -based Catholic educations, and knew we wanted the same for our sons Evan (now 7th grade, age 12) and (now 4th grade, age 9). What a blessing it is to seamlessly weave faith formation, sacramental life, and high quality education in a most welcoming and hospitable church community! St. Brigid teachers and staff are enormously gifted, caring, and generous with their time inside and outside of the classroom. As just one example, last year I worked beside one of Evan’s teachers at a festival raising funds for the Athletic Association. She doesn’t have young kids at St. Brigid, but is committed to supporting enrichment activities for her “other” children. Although it can be challenging to balance volunteer service with work schedules, we try our best to model the behavior we hope our sons will embrace for life. Recently, Evan became an altar server and I became a Eucharistic Minister. Witnessing my fellow parishioners receive the body and blood of Christ is highly moving and deepens my worship experience. I have volunteered in the kindergarten room, serve on SAC, and our family has pulled the water wagon on Field Day and made sandwiches for local shelters. The Sage Family Involvements at St. Brigid can be frequent or occasional, as family life allows. Each opportunity, whether short-term or longer, fuses faith with family and nurtures strong friendships with people who are similarly committed to Christ. We think of these wonderful friends as our extended family, and the blessed community of St. Brigid of Kildare as our second home.

Carole and I moved to Dublin in 1986 from Stow, Ohio. We attend- ed other Catholic churches in the area until they created our St. Brigid parish. In the beginning we attended Mass at several Dublin non-Catholic churches and even a local school. We remember carrying the Advent wreath on Saturday evenings to one of those churches for the first Advent (the Lutheran Church on Brand Rd). We were one of the founding families. Our first Masses on the new church property were held in the stable where the elemen- tary school now sits. We had meetings in the farmhouse on that property. The people we met were friendly and we were eager to join in and volunteer in our new church. St. Brigid Parish has been a special place for our family for over 26 years. We have had two great pastors, with the help of our Bishop, to build a church and school we are very proud of. We also were & Carole Francis blessed with a staff and volunteers to help complete our dream. We made many new friends, I volunteered to be a Catechist for Religious Education and teach 4th graders. Mary Fran Cassidy and her staff, aides, volunteers, and Catechists taught over 1,000 students each year. It was a commit- ment but a real joy! I was grateful to be able to teach for 23 years. Our children are a great blessing. There are so many activities and ministries at St. Brigid to consider. There is something for everyone. For example, join those of us who spend quiet time with the Lord in the chapel for First Friday Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Volunteer to be a Eucharistic Minister. There is great joy in visiting those who are sick and are homebound or helping at Sunday Masses. Join the Knights of Columbus, a great way to make new friends and help out with local projects. We have attended retreats at St. Therese for many years. St Brigid has great retreats for men and women. You will become closer to God and you will enjoy seeing old friends and making new ones. St. Brigid has a Tuesday Morning discussion group. We meet after the 9:00 AM Mass. We discuss Religious books, other topics and social issues. This also is a great way to make friends. Sister Teresa leads the group and does a great . Carole and I have many beautiful memories here at St. Brigid; two of our children were married here. We hope to have many more years at our home here at St. Brigid parish.

St. Brigid is literally the foundation of our family, and we're so grateful for that. Joe is a life-long parishioner and attended Mass as a child in what is now Enke Hall. I (Melanie) started attending the St. Brigid Young Adult Group, where we met, two days after my college graduation. We've had both of our children baptized by Deacon Frank, who also prepared us for the Sacrament of Marriage, and are so grateful for our relationships with all of the clergy. Our children are always excited to go to Mass and always scope out which Deacon's car is in the parking lot before we head into church. If you have young children, don't be scared to sit up front! You can join us every week on the right hand side at 9 AM Mass. Our kids (ages 4 and 2) love to be able to see what is going on during Mass. The doughnuts at the Sunday Socials after Mass might be motivating to them as well. We're so grateful for a parish and school that welcomes and encourages our entire family and serves as a spiritual home for our children. As a couple, we oversee the Couple to Couple marriage preparation program. Individually, we serve in various roles in the Knights of Columbus, Family First, Play- group, St. Brigid Football, and St. Brigid School Advisory Committee and also serve as a Eucharistic Minister and Greeters. We encourage everyone to give back to the parish, as the relationships we've made through serving the parish have always given us much more in return... our home. We hope you find a way to serve and make St. Brigid your home too. The Pizzino Family "Faith in action is love. And love in action is service." - Saint Teresa of Calcutta

At 13 years old, I was baptized in the Southern Baptist Church. I had a wonderful childhood anchored around our family’s faith. We were a deeply religious family, with a focus on active participation in our church. However, I struggled with what I was being taught. I recall being very confused as a child. I was constantly worried that if I made God mad, I was spending eternity in hell. That’s a lot for a young child/teenager to process. On July 13th, 1999 I met a wonderful woman. She is from a very small town in Northwestern Ohio that is centered on the Catholic faith. Family and faith are two foundations to daily life. We spent many Sundays with her family attending Mass. Prior to our marriage we met with the priest and participated in Pre Cana. I was impressed how accepting Catholics were of people from different Christian faiths. On September 8th, 2001 we were married at Holy Redeemer in New Bremen, Ohio. Ten years later to the day, we became the parents of a beautiful girl. She was the impetus to my eventual journey into RCIA. Raised in the Southern Baptist Church, I struggled with what my family would think of my daughter and myself becoming Catholic. Unfortunately, a number of other Christian faiths do not fully understand Catholicism. I discussed with my family that we planned to have her Baptized into the Catholic Church. While they had many questions, they also accepted and encouraged the journey. That was a great relief. Coinciding with her Baptism, I decided that I would join the Church. I continued to put it off though, always saying I’ll do it next year. My father-in-law passed away in October 2015 after a heroic fight with cancer. Prior to his death, I promised him I would become Catholic and raise my family in the Church. Prior to the one-year anniversary of his death, I became very guilt ridden that I had not followed through on my promise. It was almost as if I could hear his deep, baritone voice in my head saying “you promised.” After attending Mass one Sunday with my family, I decided it was time. No more excuses. That was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life. I don’t have enough adjectives to properly describe the process. Kim VanHuffel, Kim & Andy Lee with daughter Isla the deacons, Monsignor, and the two seminarians (Luke LaFleur and TJ Lehigh), along with everyone who participat- ed and lead us, made the transition a truly wonderful experience. I feel blessed that we had Kim guide us along this path. She is one of God’s great teachers. Everything from my first RCIA class, discussion of the Word during Mass, our retreat, to the Easter Vigil was an amazing experience. The Sacrament of Reconciliation gave me an understanding of what a loving and forgiving God we have. The highlight of my journey was Holy Week and the events leading up to receiving the Body and Blood of Christ on the Easter Vigil. That was one of the most moving experiences of my life. I often think about the peace I had that day in times of stress and uncertainty. I would tell anyone wanting to come into the Catholic Church, joining RCIA will give you a real understanding of how patient, caring, and forgiving our God really is. That has been the greatest gift I have received. While God is just, He is also compassionate. He understands that we are human and we will make mistakes. Our Church is a place of comfort, understanding, and fulfillment. You’ll find peace at every turn at Saint Brigid of Kildare Catholic Church. I’m also grateful how it has brought our family together. I am filled with tremendous joy and pride seeing my little girl excited to attend children’s church. Saint Brigid is a family-focused place of worship, accepting of everyone, judgmental of no one. I would like to personally thank Kim VanHuffel. Having someone as educated and driven to help others was a real gift. Kim took the time, and still does, to explain the why behind our faith. I’m a very inquisitive person by nature. I always want to know why. As Monsignor expressed multiple times during our RCIA process, there’s always a deeper meaning in our faith. Kim was always able to explain that meaning and connect how it affects our daily lives. I also want to thank my fellow RCIA candidates and catechumen. I learned so much from their questions and their journey. It was a blessing to see different people from different backgrounds come together around one truth. Thank you all.

Thanks to many gracious donors at our SPiCE Corks for a Cause event, we raised enough funds within minutes to purchase an adaptive rock climbing wall! The new wall is up and ready to be used in our gymnasium. This rock climbing wall is ideal for adapted or inclusive physical education, occupational therapy and physical therapy, and provides opportunities to develop balance, body awareness, muscle strength, motor planning and more. Climbing also provides proprioceptive input to improve sensory integration. The climbing wall is also well suited for special education where learning and movement can be inte- grated, and problem solving, visual attention and concentration are required. This “lateral climbing wall” is truly an interactive experience! Children can play climbing wall games and mark routes, and learn math facts or spelling words on this adaptable wall. The adaptive holds include grab-bar style hand holds and ledge-style foot holds to provide stability and extra support for children with physical disabilities. This is a great wall for learners of all ages and abilities! This wall will be used in physical education classes for all students and can be utilized by our academic support team for specialized one to one therapy and learning experiences.

Earlier this summer, the St. Brigid of Kildare Educational Center was a busy construction zone as 200 crew kids, 35 adult mangers and 70 youth leaders worked together to Build the Kingdom of God at St. Brigid of Kildare's Vacation Bible School 2017. Throughout the week, campers learned how to build God's Kingdom by being kind, faithful, humble, thankful and courageous. Special thanks to the entire St. Brigid of Kildare community for creating a space that encourages children of all ages to learn and practice their faith.

This concise history of the Catholic Church tells the story of the two thousand -year relationship between Jesus and the believers who have followed him. It is a story of people: peasants and , and heretics, martyrs and apostates. Mostly, the story shows how common people throughout the ages have passed on the faith from generation to generation and tried to live the life of Christ. The story of the Church is also about the Spirit of God who dwells with us always. We will use the book entitled A Popular History of the Catholic Church by Karl Koch, available through Amazon.
