Youth Happening This Week D’var Torah : Rav James

Sunday As Am Yisrael encamp before Har Sinai, united like never before and, as yet, never 9:45am KYHS Mishmar with Rabbi Nachbar again, Moshe climbs the mountain one last time, before the covenant and revelation take place at Sinai. On this visit he was not only told how to guide the people in order to prepare them for the receiving of the Torah, but it seems he was also told about Monday what the greater intention of this covenant was. 7:30pm Middle School Mishmar in the Beit Midrash & Modular If we were to judge the purpose of the Torah according to the many shul sermons and 8:30pm High School Monday Learning with Bnei Akiva & NCSY in Beit Midrash modern day Jewish books, we might think that the idea is to make each individual a better person. We can see that since Am Yisrael was exiled amongst the nations, a large emphasis has been put on personal improvement. Indeed, this is a very noble Wednesday and worthy cause. The Vilna Gaon goes as far as to say that if not for bettering 6:15pm Cub Scouts in Rooms 3&4 ourselves our lives would be meaningless. Nevertheless, all this is from the 6:15pm Girl Scouts in Room 5 individual’s perspective. The Heavenly view is very different. The last message Hashem gave to Moshe before Matan Torah is and “you shall be unto Me a kingdom 7:30pm Boy Scouts in Rooms 1 & 2 of priests, and a holy nation‟ Although personal improvement is essential to our 7:30pm Bnei Akiva Tzevet Meeting in Room 6 religion, the greater goal is to create a kingdom which lives according to the mitzvot and the values of the Torah. Thursday The Sforno teaches that the purpose of such a society is to be a source of inspiration to the nations of the world: “to understand and to teach the entire human race to call 8:00pm Latte & Learn Dunkin Donut Hashem’s name, and worship Him united. As will be the role of Israel in future days‟. This concept the Sforno writes about is what we today would call Or La’goyim, a light unto the nations. However, his understanding of this concept is different to the way it Youth Upcoming Events is understood today. In the modern world we sometimes understand the concept of Or La’goyim to mean; live your life amongst the nations and through leading a normal life whilst having Jewish values, the gentiles you meet will look at you as a normal person and only Boy Scout Big Toe Hike then it would allow them to recognize the greatness of the values you follow, the February 4, 2018 6:30am-1:30pm at South Beach values of the Torah. The Sforno however has a very different understanding. Family Tu Bishvat Chesed Program According to him, to be an Or La’goyim, we would need to gather together as a February 4, 2018 4:30-5:30pm at Emerald Park ALF kingdom, in a sense, isolate ourselves and create our own society. The ways of Bnei Akiva Southern Region Za’ah (7th & 8th Grade) Shabbaton influencing the world would then be restricted. February 9-10, 2018 We would not be influencing on an individual level but rather as a collective. It would Middle School Everglades Trip not be about whom we meet at work or who our neighbors are, but rather how as a February 11, 2018 10:00am-1:00pm society we can spread a message. This can be achieved through creating a just Scoutmaster Camp society, based on the morals and values of the Torah. Through being a „normal‟ February 16-18, 2018 nation rather than a “normal‟ individual, we can show the whole world and not only MS Youth Council our immediate surroundings, what “normal‟ people can achieve. An individual is February 20, 2018 7:00-8:00pm in Rooms 1 & 2 forever limited on how many people he can reach out to in his entire lifetime. Even if Mommy & Me every Jew was to be successful in their own turf, how does that help places where February 24, 2018 10:15am in Chapel there are no , as the vast majority of the world will never meet a Jew in their Adar Color War & Purim Chesed lives? However, a just society has the ability to influence the entire world and show February 25, 2018 details to follow everyone how the values of the Torah, and being close to Hashem, can elevate our very existence.

We are looking for housing for the Bnei Akiva ZACH (7th & 8th Grade) Shabbaton for both staff and out of town participants. If you are able to host please email Rav James
