PERIODICAL PUBLICATIONS FROM THE AUSRALIAN JEWISH COMMUNITY A Union List Compiled by Marianne Dacy University of Sydney, Archive of Australian Judaica, 2006, fourth edition I. DETAILS OF SCOPE AND ARRANGEMENT OF BIBLIOGRAPHY Scope The bibliography lists more than 400 Australian Jewish periodicals as well as over 100 annual reports and yearbooks of Australian Jewish organisations currently held in some 20 libraries and Jewish resource centres in Australia. Some New Zealand material is also included. Arrangement The listings are arranged alphabetically, initial articles being disregarded. In the case of title changes, each sequence receives its own entry with title cross references. Subject to availability of details, periodical annotations include: place of publication, the responsible body, dates and length of run, size, frequency, editorship, content, the name of the printer, as well as where these periodicals are to be found. Titles of some periodicals mentioned in articles were also included, even when actual copies were not found. When it was possible to trace starting dates, these were added to Annual Reports of organisations. The plus sign "+" indicates that the periodical is still being published (shown at the end of runs) and "imp" at the end of a run shows that some issues are missing. The symbol n d means undated. II.     Application for Admission to the Drisha June Kollel, May 24 – June 24, 2016 The June Kollel consists of a core curriculum of intensive Torah study, tefilla, and service. Each morning, shacharit begins at 8:15am. Beginning at 7:30am, we offer a variety of options of hakhanah litfilla (preparation for prayer). Past options have included analysis of the liturgy, study of chasidic texts about prayer, singing of niggunim, and meditation. Participants are required to attend at least one session per week. Breakfast follows tefilla. Morning seder focuses on intensive Talmud study, with shiurim offered on different levels. After mincha, participants choose from a selection of classes. Past offering have included shiurim on Tanakh, Halakhah, Mishpat Ivri, and Jewish spiritual practices. Both morning and afternoon sedarim include chavruta study as well as shiur. There is night seder (followed by maariv) twice a week and optional Wednesday evening programming. The beit midrash remains open every night for those who want to continue to study. Daily Schedule 7:30AM: Hakhana Litfilla (at least one per week) 8:15AM: Shacharit 9AM: Breakfast 9:30AM-1PM: Talmud Seder 1PM-2:15PM: Lunch 2:15PM: Mincha 2:45PM-5:30PM: Choice of classes 5:30PM-6:30PM: Dinner 6:30PM-9PM: Night Seder and Maariv (twice a week) Please note that this year’s Kollel includes a Shavuot Retreat in Honesdale, PA from June 10-13, 2016. Other Developments During this period several smaller Jewish communities began to plan the establishment of a vocational service facility on a part-time basis. Four additional agencies introduced fees for vocational guidance service, making a total of eight (Cleveland, Boston, Houston, Cincinnati, Denver, Milwaukee, New York City, and Philadelphia), and three agencies (Kansas City, Mo., Houston, and Montreal) expanded staff to meet more of their local needs. The Jewish Occupational Council and JVS agencies were consulted by Hadassah, The Women's Zionist Organization of America and the Israel Consulate for the development of more adequate vocational service facilities in Israel. The JVS agencies were used to assist Israeli students in the United States and to help train vocational service personnel for Israel. Many national Jewish organizations spon- sor youth-serving programs to fulfill similar purposes for their young people. The Jewish Community Center In 1951 the number of Jewish community centers and Young Men's and Women's Hebrew Associations in the United States affiliated with the Na- tional Jewish Welfare Board (JWB) increased to 337. This represented a rise of 42 from the total of 295 in 1946, at the end of World War II. The aggre- gate number of individuals served by centers increased 2 per cent over the number served in 1950 to reach an estimated total of 514,000; the propor- tionate increase since 1946 was 15.5 per cent.
