9 K. RESEARCH ACTIVITIES/EXPERIENCE

1. 1985-1986: Undergraduate thesis on the phytochemistry of twigs of Croton macrostachyus found in Kenya. Structural elucidation of the isolated compounds was done and the work has been published.

2. 1988-1990: Collaborative research in the then Department of Pharmacy that was working on the Croton species found in Kenya. Many compounds, including the novel compounds chiromodine and epoxychiromodine, were isolated from C. megalocarpus. Constituents of C. sylvaticus were also isolated and characterized.

3. 1990-1996: Masters and doctoral studies by research on the chemical stability of some sugar- modified nucleosides using liquid chromatography and other methods (gas chromatography, capillary electrophoresis, ultra-violet spectroscopy, infra-red spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance and titrimetric methods).

4. 1997-Date: Day to day supervision of research at Drug Analysis Research Unit (DARU) - routine analysis of commercial samples and research on development of methods for analysis of combinations of antituberculosis, antimalarial, antiepilepsy and antiretroviral drugs, amongst others.

5. 1997-Date: Investigation of Kenyan plants containing essential oils. Determination of the chemical composition of oils of various plants and their antimicrobial activity.

6. 2000-Date: Research on evaluation of Kenyan medicinal plants for their anthelmintic activity.
