2017-2018 Annual Report Our Pharmacy Community Consistently Strives for Excellence and We Are Proud of What We’Ve Accomplished in the Past Year
THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF PHARMACY 2017-2018 Annual Report Our pharmacy community consistently strives for excellence and we are proud of what we’ve accomplished in the past year. Improving medications and medication-related health outcomes remains at the core of everything we do. Our students and alumni are motivated to make a difference, and as you can see from this report, they are doing just that. This year, our students were recognized on-campus and around the country for their dedication to this profession and making a difference in the lives of their patients. Two student organizations received university awards for their community service efforts and passion for enhancing diversity, while undergraduate and professional students were celebrated for their commitment to their studies, research and the community. Our students weren’t the only ones who experienced success this year; our faculty and staff expanded on the college’s strong research and outreach efforts. The college ranked 12th in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding and exceeded our seven-year average of peer-reviewed publications. Our partnerships flourished and we were able to provide more support to the community than ever before through presentations, live performances, screenings and medication therapy management reviews. Of course, none of this hard work would be possible if it weren’t for our incredible alumni, donors and friends. This year, donations to The Ohio State Fund for Pharmacy were up more than 7% and we reached our annual giving goal two months early. While the pages that follow showcase just a snapshot of all our accomplishments from the past year, I hope you feel a sense of Buckeye pride as you read through the report. -

Public Interest Panel Review of Professional Degree Programs The ACPE Public Interest Panel met on June 17, 2019, to discuss the professional degree programs scheduled for review by the ACPE Board of Directors during its June 2019, meeting. Evaluation team reports and other materials associated with the evaluation of the professional degree programs were duly considered, and a report of the Panel’s discussion was prepared and presented to the ACPE Board at its June 19-22, 2019, meeting. The Board considered the comments and recommendations of the Panel. Panel members who participated in the meeting of the Public Interest Panel were: Dana Thomas, Deborah Kapp, and Howell Todd. II. Accreditation Actions for Professional Degree Programs, taken at the ACPE Board of Directors Meeting, June 19-22, 2019 A list of accredited professional degree programs of colleges and schools of pharmacy, which designates the respective preaccreditation and accreditation status of the programs and the academic year for the next currently scheduled evaluation, is posted on the ACPE web site at www.acpe-accredit.org. Accreditation Actions On the basis of self-studies, on-site evaluations, communications received from the institutions, ongoing annual review of North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) passing rates, entry class size, and attrition and on-time graduation rates, as well as the comments of the Public Interest Panel, the Board of Directors determined the accreditation status of the following professional programs, along with preaccreditation and accreditation terms and conditions. In order to be eligible for initial or continuing accreditation, the Doctor of Pharmacy program must be part of an independent College or School of Pharmacy or a College or School of Pharmacy within a University, which is regularly incorporated and is a legally empowered postsecondary educational institution. -

THE DOCTOR OF PHARMACY/DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (PharmD/PhD) COMBINED-DEGREE OPTION IN THE COLLEGE OF PHARMACY Summary The College of Pharmacy offers a combined-degree program in which a student already enrolled in the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) professional program at Purdue University can begin to accrue credits toward a PhD degree in one of the three departments in the College before earning the PharmD. Key elements of the program are: 1. No additional time will be required for a student to complete the requirements for the PharmD degree. 2. Through a judicious choice of electives and research rotations, a student can begin graduate coursework and research while still enrolled as a PharmD student, thus saving on the amount of time required for completing both programs separately. 3. Students will be eligible for admission into the Graduate School following satisfactory completion of four years of study (either a BS degree or two years of prepharmacy courses and two years of professional courses). 4. No curricular compromises in either program are necessary. 5. The student who successfully completes the combined-degree program will receive the PharmD degree followed by the PhD degree. Departments Involved All three departments in the College of Pharmacy (the Department of Industrial and Physical Pharmacy (IPPH), the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology (MCMP), and the Department of Pharmacy Practice (PHPR)) offer this combined-degree option. The program will be administered by the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs of the College of Pharmacy in cooperation with the Associate Dean for Professional Programs and the departmental graduate chairs. -

Study plan Bachelor of Pharmacy Programme description Programme contents The Bachelor in Pharmacy is a professional degree which enables the candidate to apply for authorization as a pharmacist in some of the Nordic countries (Norway, Sweden and Finland). The basis of pharmacy practice involves knowledge about the structure, characteristics, effects, use and production of pharmaceuticals. The terms drug information, drug distribution and pharmaceutical production are important parts of the pharmacist’s professional knowledge. Medical, chemical, pharmaceutical and social scientific topics are integrated in the practice of pharmacy. Work including the dispensing of drugs and guidance in the use of drugs requires basic theoretic knowledge from these various fields of study. Practical application of this specialist knowledge contributes to appropriate problem solving in collaboration with patients, colleagues and other partners. Most pharmacists get a job working in a pharmacy. Pharmacies are contributors to the health service in Norway. They are local professional environments with knowledge about pharmaceuticals and are there to promote rational drug use. The pharmacist's duties require contact and cooperation with patients, physicians, dentists, veterinarians, home-based services and hospitals/nursing homes, amongst others. Good communication skills are a necessary part of the total professional competence associated with being a pharmacist. These skills are applied when in contact with patients and other health care groups. The programme demands a good level of both written and oral Norwegian. A bachelor candidate in pharmacy needs to have the knowledge, skills and attitudes involved in pharmaceutical subjects which qualify for government authorization as a pharmacist cf. The Health Personnel Act of 2nd July 1999, including the right to dispense drugs in Norwegian pharmacies. -

The study also documents patient satisfaction with pharmacist counselling as a quality control measure. Methods/design: This is a randomized, single-blind, two-arm, controlled trial in patients with rheumatoid arthritis visiting outpatient rheumatology clinics in Karachi, Pakistan. We will enroll patients with established diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis over 3 months. The patients would be randomized through a computer-generated list into the control group, i.e., usual care or into the intervention group, i.e., pharmaceutical care, in a ratio of 1:1, after providing signed written consent. The study will take place in two patient-visits over the course of 3 months. Patients in the intervention group would receive intervention from the pharmacist while those in the control group will receive usual care. Primary outcomes include change in mean score from baseline (week 0) and at follow up (week 12) in disease knowledge, adherence to medications and rehabilitation/physical therapy. The secondary outcomes include change in the mean direct cost of treatment, HRQoL and patient satisfaction with pharmacist counselling. -
