Stara Buda) i Pest (pol. Aceves* During the 2016 U.S. presidential election, the Russian government engaged in a sophisticated strategy to influence the U.S. political system and manipulate American democracy. While most news reports have focused on the cyber-attacks aimed at Democratic Party leaders and possible contacts between Russian officials and the Trump presidential campaign, a more pernicious intervention took place. Throughout the campaign, Russian operatives created hundreds of fake personas on social media platforms and then posted thousands of advertisements and messages that sought to promote racial divisions in the United States. This was a coordinated propaganda effort.

  • “Regime of Truth” and Possibilities of Trans-National History in Japan and China
Historiography in Japan and China “Regime of Truth” and Possibilities of Trans-National History in Japan and China Daqing Yang (George Washington University) Trans-national history—history written specifically for readers in more than one country—has become more than just an intellectual exercise, but also a political endeavor in East Asia as well as elsewhere. In early 2002, the Japanese and Korean governments signed an agreement, to establish a Joint Historical Research Project. According to one counting, there are half a dozen current efforts among East Asian historians and educators to create common history textbooks. Joint conferences are too numerous to count. Perhaps one of the most ambitious collaborative projects has been that organized by Ezra Vogel, of Harvard University which brings together historians from Japan, China, and the US to study the local, military, and diplomatic aspects of the Sino-Japanese War (1931-1945).1 This phenomenon is largely a response to the conflicting interpretations over Japan’s record of colonialism and war in the early 20th century that has often erupted into the diplomatic arena in East Asia. Such cross-national endeavors, necessary and well intentioned as they no doubt are, are fraught with difficulties. These difficulties are both political as well as intellectual. As we all know, history writing is not just as an intellectual exercise among academics; it is shaped by specific social-political conditions. Public history projects in particular, school textbooks and museum exhibits among them, must satisfy both intellectual integrity and public support.2 If writing for one national audience is often difficult enough, how can historians meet the challenge of writing for different national societies? To be sure, those who believe in Universal Truth or the scientific nature of history 1 Session 3 writing may reject this question as unnecessary.

  • Genocide: a Comprehensive Introduction Is the Most Wide-Ranging Textbook on Geno- Cide Yet Published
    ■ GENOCIDE Genocide: A Comprehensive Introduction is the most wide-ranging textbook on geno- cide yet published. The book is designed as a text for upper-undergraduate and graduate students, as well as a primer for non-specialists and general readers interested in learning about one of humanity’s enduring blights. Over the course of sixteen chapters, genocide scholar Adam Jones: • Provides an introduction to genocide as both a historical phenomenon and an analytical-legal concept. • Discusses the role of imperalism, war, and social revolution in fueling genocide. • Supplies no fewer than seven full-length case studies of genocides worldwide, each with an accompanying box-text. • Explores perspectives on genocide from the social sciences, including psychology, sociology, anthropology, political science/international relations, and gender studies. • Considers “The Future of Genocide,” with attention to historical memory and genocide denial; initiatives for truth, justice, and redress; and strategies of intervention and prevention. Written in clear and lively prose, liberally sprinkled with illustrations and personal testimonies from genocide survivors, Genocide: A Comprehensive Introduction is destined to become a core text of the new generation of genocide scholarship. An accompanying website (www.genocidetext.net) features a broad selection of supplementary materials, teaching aids, and Internet resources. Adam Jones, Ph.D. is currently Associate Research Fellow in the Genocide Studies Program at Yale University. His recent publications

As someone who grew up in a remarkably small rural town, my early intellectual development owes largely to my blissful ignorance of the astonishing labors and successes of my phenomenal parents, James and Denise Brosius. They have provided me their endless support, a place to grow, and, perhaps most importantly, grounded me from becoming hopelessly detached. Were it not for their support, I understand rather strongly what other options awaited me. My primary mentors during the course of this paper ultimately changed over time due to my own problems – something I hope dearly to have addressed.

Tuesday 4 April 2017, 09:00 - 10:30 PAPER SESSION 1 Cities, Mobilities, Place and Space A ROOM 1.218 CITIES BUILT TO INCLUDE? THE THEORIES AND PRACTICE OF INCLUSION IN URBAN PUBLIC SPACE In the last few decades urban regeneration strategies (e.g. Towards an Urban Renaissance [Urban Task Force 1999] in the space) have put particular emphasis on the rejuvenation of the urban public space. In this context, urban public realm has routinely been portrayed in more abstract social scientific accounts as under threat from various social forces. These include the perceived ‘disneyfication’ of public space (Sorkin [ed.] 1992), its increasing securitisation (Ruppert 2006) and declining levels of participation in public life (Sennett 1974). Against this backdrop, this themed session will explore both practical and theoretical approaches to dealing with issues of social inclusion and public space. Fostering social inclusion in public space is important, it has been suggested, because it can enable casual, everyday social contact between different ethnic and age groups (Young 1990) and the generation of ‘weak ties’ that provide for the accommodation of social differences (Watson 2006). In this vein, and in the spirit of the conference theme, public space can become a site for rendering personal causes, identities and subjectivities public; or at the very least a site for experiencing, even if just visually, inter-personal difference. Amidst a raft of influential accounts of public space that forecast its demise, this session aims to examine the ways in which policymakers, planners and urban denizens themselves have the potential to create and nurture inclusive public spaces.
