Aceves* During the 2016 U.S. presidential election, the Russian government engaged in a sophisticated strategy to influence the U.S. political system and manipulate American democracy. While most news reports have focused on the cyber-attacks aimed at Democratic Party leaders and possible contacts between Russian officials and the Trump presidential campaign, a more pernicious intervention took place. Throughout the campaign, Russian operatives created hundreds of fake personas on social media platforms and then posted thousands of advertisements and messages that sought to promote racial divisions in the United States. This was a coordinated propaganda effort. -

We’re so excited to have you join us as delegations at the World Trade Organization at SciMUNC this year. My name is Mohammadou Gningue, and I’m elated to be serving as co-chair for this committee. I’ll be working closely with my co-chair, Alysa Chen, as well as your rapporteur Maliha Akter to make sure that this committee runs as smoothly as possible. I’m currently a senior at The Bronx High School of Science and have been participating in MUN since I was a sophomore and this is my second year chairing a committee. Niamh Hartley
Niamh Hartley Jung Chang is a bestselling author originally from Chengdu, China and was an English-language student at Sichuan university (1). Her book, Wild Swans – Three Daughters of China, tells the tale of three generations of Chinese women during the rise and fall of Mao. According to Asian Wall Street Journal, it is the most read book about China and Chinese history. Jung Chang came to the University of York in 1978 and obtained a PhD in Linguistics in 1982 (2). She was the first person from the People’s Republic of China to receive a doctorate from a British University (3). Growing up during the Cultural Revolution meant Chang worked as a peasant, a “barefoot” doctor, a steelworker and an electrician (4). After travelling to the UK and experiencing how different the two cultures were, Jung Chang was inspired to tell her and her family’s stories. In relation to her time spend studying abroad, Chang expressed her surprise; “to keep an open mind was a bombshell” (5). Although this could relate to the environment in communist China, it also shows how her time in a different country was able to give her a new perspective on the world. By reflecting on her past and wanting to educate people on the history of China she wrote her family history in Wild Swans. By coming to England for her PhD, she could educate people on her country, opening the communication across cultures and countries. Furthermore, her book has been translated into more than 30 languages (6). This is an extreme example of how studying abroad can help connect cultures and allow different nationalities to empathise with each other. -

China as dystopia: Cultural imaginings through translation Published in: Translation Studies (Taylor and Francis) doi: 10.1080/14781700.2015.1009937 Tong King Lee* School of Chinese, The University of Hong Kong *Email: [email protected] This article explores how China is represented in English translations of contemporary Chinese literature. It seeks to uncover the discourses at work in framing this literature for reception by an Anglophone readership, and to suggest how these discourses dovetail with meta-narratives on China circulating in the West. In addition to asking “what gets translated”, the article is interested in how Chinese authors and their works are positioned, marketed, and commodified in the West through the discursive material that surrounds a translated book. Drawing on English translations of works by Yan Lianke, Ma Jian, Chan Koonchung, Yu Hua, Su Tong, and Mo Yan, the article argues that literary translation is part of a wider programme of Anglophone textual practices that renders China an overdetermined sign pointing to a repressive, dystopic Other. The knowledge structures governing these textual practices circumscribe the ways in which China is imagined and articulated, thereby producing a discursive China. Journal ofTrw The Missing Puzzle Piece in Translation Pedagogy: Adaptive and Elastic Competence Grace Qiao Zhang Curtin University, Australia Abstract The study of effective and innovative translation pedagogy has been drawing increasing attention in recent years, but the training of adaptive and elastic competence is somewhat overlooked. This study investigates the importance of strategic translation through the theoretical lens of Verschueren's (1998) Adaptation Theory. The analysis is based on a case study of the 2001 Sino-American Hainan airplane collision crisis, and in pru.ticular the pivotal role of different versions of the American "two sorries" letter in facilitating the resolution. It highlights the need to incorporate language adaptation and the interests of all parties in a translation. This study argues that translation is a negotiable and adaptable process, influenced by both overt and covert components, and that this process should be reflected in translation education by fostering the ability to get behind the text to cater to the interests of all interested patties: that is, to cultivate adaptive and elastic competence. The findings suggest that a realistic, balanced, and robust account of adaptation and elasticity is needed for effective translation education. 1. Sarotte Contagion Tiananmen Square and the Power of the European Example For the leaders of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), erasing the memory of the June 4, 1989, Tiananmen Square massacre remains a full-time job. The party aggressively monitors and restricts media and internet commentary about the event. As Sinologist Jean-Philippe Béja has put it, during the last two decades it has not been possible “even so much as to mention the conjoined Chinese characters for 6 and 4” in web searches, so dissident postings refer instead to the imagi- nary date of May 35.1 Party censors make it “inconceivable for scholars to ac- cess Chinese archival sources” on Tiananmen, according to historian Chen Jian, and do not permit schoolchildren to study the topic; 1989 remains a “‘for- bidden zone’ in the press, scholarship, and classroom teaching.”2 The party still detains some of those who took part in the protest and does not allow oth- ers to leave the country.3 And every June 4, the CCP seeks to prevent any form of remembrance with detentions and a show of force by the pervasive Chinese security apparatus. The result, according to expert Perry Link, is that in to- M.E.
