W wielu państwach stanowiły one pierwszy krok do od- zyskania wolności i suwerenności oraz do pojawienia się pojęcia naro- du. Sytuacja była podobna m.in. również na Węgrzech, które ponad trzysta lat były podległe Habsburgom i gdzie niezadowolenie oraz tłu- mione przez wieki pragnienie odzyskania wolności znalazły swój punkt kulminacyjny 15 marca 1848 r., gdy w Peszcie i w Budzie2 wybuchło powstanie przeciwko Austriakom. Mimo że tym ostatnim, dzięki we- zwanym do pomocy Rosjanom, udało się je stłumić, data ta okazała się jednak na tyle przełomową, że jest to obecnie jedno z najważniejszych świąt narodowych na Węgrzech. Co roku kilka tysięcy Polaków przy- jeżdża na uroczystości organizowane z tej okazji na Węgrzech. Węgier- ska Wiosna Ludów łączy oba narody nie tylko ze względu na wspólne świętowanie w dzisiejszych czasach, ale również dlatego, że w czasie wspomnianego powstania wielu Polaków stało się ofiarami walk nie- podległościowych na Węgrzech. Osoby te zostały stracone z powodu swoich związków z powstaniem, wpisując się w historię tradycyjnej, wielowiekowej przyjaźni polsko-węgierskiej, utrwalonej w znanym powiedzeniu „Polak, Węgier, dwa bratanki, i do szabli, i do szklan- ki”3. W niniejszym artykule autor stawia sobie za cel ukazanie sylwetek kilku postaci polskiego pochodzenia. Stara Buda) i Pest (pol. Peszt) zjednoczyły się w 1873 r., po czym powstał Budapest (pol. Budapeszt). 3 Wersja węgierska tego powiedzenia brzmi następująco: „Lengyel, magyar, két jó barát, együtt harcol, s issza borát”. – 7 – Áron Szabolcs Fodor węgierskojęzycznych źródeł (zwłaszcza ówczesnych dzienników, ale nie tylko), podając niektóre z nich we własnym, polskim tłumaczeniu oraz głównie do węgierskojęzyczynych, ale też i polskojęzycznych opraco- wań. Autor przedstawia sylwetki tychże postaci w kolejności chronolo- gicznej, na podstawie ich dat urodzenia. Karol d’Abancourt de Franqueville urodził się we Lwowie w 1811 r. w rodzinie francuskich emigrantów i był synem Augustyna, bratanka Charles’a Xaviera Abancourta, ministra wojny Ludwika XVI. Mimo francuskobrzmiącego nazwiska był w pełni spolonizowany. Chodził do szkoły w Samborze oraz w Przemyślu. Był członkiem 30. pułku pie- choty hrabiego Nugenta. W 1837 albo w 1839 r. został aresztowany za uczestnictwo w działaniach niepodległościowych, po czym skazano go na karę śmierci. Wyrok ten został z kolei zamieniony najpierw na dwadzieścia, a potem na dziesięć lat twierdzy w Temeszwarze4. Wiosną 1848 r., został ułaskawiony na mocy amnestii zainicjowanej przez rząd węgierski i opuścił więzienie. Od sierpnia tego samego roku walczył po stronie węgierskiej armii powstańczej na południu ówczesnych Wę- gier, gdzie wykazał się szczególnie w walce pod miejscowościami Fe- hértemplom5 i Versec6 między Węgrami a Serbami, walcząc po stronie Węgrów7. Na łamach jednej z ówczesnych gazet węgierskich można znaleźć wzmiankę o tym, że „znakomicie się zachowali spośród nemze- tőrów8 sędziowie szlacheccy9 Onossy i Kálmán Tormássy, […], Aban- court, pewien Polak niedawno uwolniony ze swej trzynastoletniej nie- woli politycznej, […], i jeszcze wielu innych”10. Jesienią 1848 r. ożenił się z Zofią Miloseszko. Następnie wojował w Korpusie Górnej Cisy oraz w węgierskiej Armii Północnej11. Służył jako adiutant Henryka Dem- 4 Węg. While most news reports have focused on the cyber-attacks aimed at Democratic Party leaders and possible contacts between Russian officials and the Trump presidential campaign, a more pernicious intervention took place. Throughout the campaign, Russian operatives created hundreds of fake personas on social media platforms and then posted thousands of advertisements and messages that sought to promote racial divisions in the United States. This was a coordinated propaganda effort.

    Historiography in Japan and China “Regime of Truth” and Possibilities of Trans-National History in Japan and China Daqing Yang (George Washington University) Trans-national history—history written specifically for readers in more than one country—has become more than just an intellectual exercise, but also a political endeavor in East Asia as well as elsewhere. In early 2002, the Japanese and Korean governments signed an agreement, to establish a Joint Historical Research Project. According to one counting, there are half a dozen current efforts among East Asian historians and educators to create common history textbooks. Joint conferences are too numerous to count. Perhaps one of the most ambitious collaborative projects has been that organized by Ezra Vogel, of Harvard University which brings together historians from Japan, China, and the US to study the local, military, and diplomatic aspects of the Sino-Japanese War (1931-1945).1 This phenomenon is largely a response to the conflicting interpretations over Japan’s record of colonialism and war in the early 20th century that has often erupted into the diplomatic arena in East Asia. Such cross-national endeavors, necessary and well intentioned as they no doubt are, are fraught with difficulties. These difficulties are both political as well as intellectual. As we all know, history writing is not just as an intellectual exercise among academics; it is shaped by specific social-political conditions. Public history projects in particular, school textbooks and museum exhibits among them, must satisfy both intellectual integrity and public support.2 If writing for one national audience is often difficult enough, how can historians meet the challenge of writing for different national societies?     Under review as a conference paper at ICLR 2021 BEYOND TRIVIAL COUNTERFACTUAL GENERATIONS WITH DIVERSE VALUABLE EXPLANATIONS Anonymous authors Paper under double-blind review ABSTRACT Explainability of machine learning models has gained considerable attention within our research community given the importance of deploying more reliable machine-learning systems. Explanability can also be helpful for model debugging. In computer vision applications, most methods explain models by displaying the regions in the input image that they focus on for their prediction, but it is dif- ficult to improve models based on these explanations since they do not indicate why the model fail. Counterfactual methods, on the other hand, indicate how to perturb the input to change the model prediction, providing details about the model’s decision-making. Unfortunately, current counterfactual methods make ambiguous interpretations as they combine multiple biases of the model and the data in a single counterfactual interpretation of the model’s decision. Moreover, these methods tend to generate trivial counterfactuals about the model’s decision, as they often suggest to exaggerate or remove the presence of the attribute be- ing classified. Trivial counterfactuals are usually not valuable, since the informa- tion they provide is often already known to the system’s designer. In this work, we propose a counterfactual method that learns a perturbation in a disentangled latent space that is constrained using a diversity-enforcing loss to uncover mul- tiple valuable explanations about the model’s prediction. Further, we introduce a mechanism to prevent the model from producing trivial explanations. Experi- ments on CelebA and Synbols demonstrate that our model improves the success rate of producing high-quality valuable explanations when compared to previous state-of-the-art methods.
