Dear Consultee,

Notification of County Council Decision

The closure of Ysgol Primary School and Ysgol Llanwrda Primary School

On 27 February 2017, with the responsibilities delegated to the Executive Officer by County Council, the decision was made to approve the following proposal:-

On the last day of the spring term, 23 April 2017, the authority discontinues Ysgol Llansadwrn Primary School and Ysgol Llanwrda Primary School. From the first day of the summer term 2017, 24 April 2017, the catchment area of Ysgol will be extended to incorporate the catchment of Llansadwrn Primary School, and the catchment area of Ysgol Rhys Prichard Primary School will be extended to incorporate the catchment of Ysgol Llanwrda Primary School.

Objections to the proposal No letter of objection was received.

The matter was considered with an open mind in accordance with the School Standards and Organisation () Act 2013.

In reaching this decision the following issues were given specific consideration in respect of the proposal:-

1) Quality and Standards in Education.

It is the authority’s opinion that this proposal will maintain the present standards of education provision in the area of Llansadwrn and Llanwrda. This is confirmed by the Estyn inspections carried out at all the schools affected by this determination.

2) Need for places and the Impact of Accessibility of Schools.

In approving this proposal, the Council has considered the sufficiency of places and the likely demand for places in the future. It is noted that there are significant capital investment for both Ysgol Llangadog and Ysgol Rhys Prichard.

3) The Resourcing of Education and other financial implications.

In reaching this decision a number of matters have been taken into account, in particular to pupil numbers; the associated affect on education provision and the high cost of running the school with low pupil numbers.

The current projected revenue savings arising from this proposal amounts to £61,789 per annum for Ysgol Llansadwrn, and £70,157 per annum for Ysgol Llanwrda. These savings would be re- invested within the education service.

Should you have any queries regarding this issue or require any further information please contact Eurion Jones-Williams of this department.

Yours sincerely,

Gareth Morgans Director of Education & Children’s Services
