CXLVI published by kind permission of the Director of the Museum Chr. Christou. Cybele sitting on a throne with high back and footstool. The head is worn but the p%s and two tresses are visible; the left upper corner of the throne is lost. The left hand of the goddess rests on a tympanum the foremost part of which is lost; the greater part of her right arm is broken off, as well as the foremost part of her left foot. At her right side a lion sitting in frontal attitude; his head and breast are lost. Date: "not earlier than first century B.c."

Cybele sitting on a low throne with footstool and at her right side a sitting lion. Lost: the head, the arms, the feet, the left knee, the foremost part of the footstool, the greater part of the tympanum of the goddess; the foremost part of the body and the right forepaw of the lion. Date: "Common work of the Imperial period." 157

495. Bluish marble statue (H. 0.37, W. 0.34, D. 0.17) from Sparta. Sparta, Archaeological Museum, Inv. no 351. Milchhofer in AM 2, 1877, 329 no 47; Tod-Wace, Cat. Sparta Museum, 170 no 351; Chapouthier in Mel. Dussaud II, 1939,723 no 2. Cybele sitting on a lion to the right; her feet on a footstool. The head and the shoulders of the goddess are lost. In her right hand, which rests on the lion's body, is a patera (partly lost); in her left hand a tympanum decorated with a star with eight rays. The back of the statue is round. Date: "not earlier than the first century B.C."

496. White marble statue (H. 0.415, W. 0.17-0.23, D. 0.25) from Sparta. Sparta, Archaeological Museum, Inv. no 452. Tod-Wace, Cat. Sparta Museum, 179 no 452. Cybele sitting on a throne with high back and footstool. The head and the right forearm are lost, but part of the patera is preserved. Her left arm is not visible; at this side the greater part of the tympanum. At either side of the throne a lion sitting in frontal attitude. Date: "common work of Imperial period."

Heydemann, Antike Marmor-Bildwerke zu A then, no 762; Dressel-Milchhoefer in AM 2, 1877, 379 no 194; Svoronos, NM, 623 no 278 and PI. CXV11I, 1548. Naiskos with pediment, the upper left corner of which is broken off. Cybele seated on a throne without back and footstool. She wears a p%s, girt chiton and himation. In her right hand a patera; at her left side a large tympanum; on her lap a lion lying to the left.

498. Marble statue (H. 0.21) from Sparta. Sparta, Archaeological Museum, without Inv. no. Dressel-Milchhoefer in AM 2, 1877,330 no 50; Tod-Wace, Cat. Sparta Museum, 175 no 424. I did not see this monument during my visit to Sparta. Very worn statue, of which Cybele's head and breast are lacking. The goddess is seated on a throne. Against the right side of this throne a sitting lion; at the other side also a sitting lion in frontal attitude, but sit­ ting freely. No further details.
