PEDOTTI5 Tectonic and seismological data collected in the field following the September 13, 1986, Kalemateearthquake (south Peloponnesus) are presentedand analyzedto discussthe earthquake rupture process and the regional tectonics. The event occurred on the Kalamata normal fault whose trace was mapped with SPOT images and topographic and field observations. This fault is part of an approximately NNW-SSE en •chelon system cutting through the Hellenic nappes. The fault strikingN15øE on the average,with a dip of about 50ø, has a minimumcumulated Quaternary throw of the order of 1 km. The measured coseismic slip is 6-18 cm over a length of 6 km. Themain shock focal mechanism obtained from long-period waveform modeling (strike=201 ø (+ 10o,_ 20 o ), dip=45o q_ 5 o, rake=283 o (+ 10o,_ 25 o ) ) representsalmost pure east- west extension and is in good agreement with tectonic observations. The centroid depth is constrained to 5-t-3 kmand the seismic moment to ?.0q_2.$x1017 N m. Over700 aftershocks, located by a 16-station network installed after the earthquake for a period of 2 weeks, define two clusters separated by a "gap" of aftershock activity, from the surface to a depth of about 10 km. The main cluster, to the south,defines a 45ø westdipping plane which lies on the downwardextension of the fault mapped at the surface. Focal mechanisms of aftershocks on this fault plane are homogeneous and represent E-W extension as the main shock. In contrast, the majority of focal mechanisms in the uppermost part of the footwall show more or less E-W compression, probably corresponding to postseismic stress release. The northern cluster of aftershocks is very dense and located away from the surface rupture, within a relay zone between the Kalemate and the next en •chelon faults to the NW, the Thouria faults. There focal mechanisms represent extension from about Nl15 ø to N?0ø and N20ø, correspondingmostly to fault reactivationin an areawhere nonrigid deformations prevail. The main shock probably initiated in this relay zone 3-4 s before the rupture front reached the main fault plane and released most of the energy there, the rupture presumably propagating southward. The focal mechanism of the Kalemate earthquake and that of the April 27, 1965, earthquake located to the northwest of Crete, as well as the regional active normal fault pattern, imply that E-W extension oblique to the Hellenic arc is presently the dominant tectonic regime. E-W stretching occurs partly on reactivated NW-SE faults parallel to the Hellenic structures but mostly on newly formed N-S normal faults across those structures. The latter faults are responsible for the apparent segmentation of the Hellenic belt from southorn Peloponnesus to Crete. The existence of active E-W extension in this region implies a recent change in the tectonic regime and consequently a change in boundary conditions at the subduction r.one, probably in response to the incoming margin of Africa. It has also been the subject of a controversy about the ancestry of its population. In a theory hotly debated by scholars for over 170 years, the German historian Jacob Philipp Fallmerayer proposed that the medieval Peloponneseans were totally extinguished by Slavic and Avar invaders and replaced by Slavic settlers during the 6th century CE. Here we use 2.5 million single-nucleotide polymorphisms to investigate the genetic structure of Peloponnesean populations in a sample of 241 individuals originating from all districts of the peninsula and to examine predictions of the theory of replacement of the medieval Peloponneseans by Slavs. We find considerable heterogeneity of Peloponnesean populations exemplified by genetically distinct subpopulations and by gene flow gradients within Peloponnese. By principal component analysis (PCA) and ADMIXTURE analysis the Peloponneseans are clearly distinguishable from the populations of the Slavic homeland and are very similar to Sicilians and Italians. Using a novel method of quantitative analysis of ADMIXTURE output we find that the Slavic ancestry of Peloponnesean subpopulations ranges from 0.2 to 14.4%.

    Early Mycenaean Arkadia: Space and Place(s) of an Inland and Mountainous Region Eleni Salavoura1 Abstract: The concept of space is an abstract and sometimes a conventional term, but places – where people dwell, (inter)act and gain experiences – contribute decisively to the formation of the main characteristics and the identity of its residents. Arkadia, in the heart of the Peloponnese, is a landlocked country with small valleys and basins surrounded by high mountains, which, according to the ancient literature, offered to its inhabitants a hard and laborious life. Its rough terrain made Arkadia always a less attractive area for archaeological investigation. However, due to its position in the centre of the Peloponnese, Arkadia is an inevitable passage for anyone moving along or across the peninsula. The long life of small and medium-sized agrarian communities undoubtedly owes more to their foundation at crossroads connecting the inland with the Peloponnesian coast, than to their potential for economic growth based on the resources of the land. However, sites such as Analipsis, on its east-southeastern borders, the cemetery at Palaiokastro and the ash altar on Mount Lykaion, both in the southwest part of Arkadia, indicate that the area had a Bronze Age past, and raise many new questions. In this paper, I discuss the role of Arkadia in early Mycenaean times based on settlement patterns and excavation data, and I investigate the relation of these inland communities with high-ranking central places. In other words, this is an attempt to set place(s) into space, supporting the idea that the central region of the Peloponnese was a separated, but not isolated part of it, comprising regions that are also diversified among themselves.

The Helot Revolt of Sparta Greece Sparta, at first, was only the Messenia and Laconia territories, and later the Spartans (previously known as the Dorians) came and took over those territories. Those places they conquered had other residents who were captured and used them as Spartan “slaves” (also known as Helots) for the growing nation. However, these Helots were not the property of anyone or under the control of a specific person. They worked for Sparta in general, and since the Dorians couldn’t do agriculture, they made the Helots do the work. The Dorians were “Barbarians,” note them taking over territories. Unlike the slaves that we know today, these ones were able to go wherever they want in Spartan territory and they could live normal lives like the Spartans.The Helots lived in houses together for a plot of land that they worked on. They were allowed families, to go away from their house and make cash for themselves. Occasionally, the Helots would be assigned to help out in the military. However, not all Helots were happy where they were at. Around 660 B.C., the Spartans attacked the Argives, who demolished the Spartans. The report of Sparta’s lost gave encouragement to the Helots who started a revolt against Sparta, which is now known as the Second Messenian War.​ The Spartans were fighting to gain back control, but they were outnumbered seven Helots to one Spartan. The details about this war were concealed, and very little information is known about what happened in the war.

The city lay at the northern end of the central Laconian plain, on the right bank of the river Eurotas, a little south of the point where it is joined by its largest tributary, the Oenus (mount Kelefina). The site is admirably fitted by nature to guard the only routes by which an army can penetrate Laconia from the land side, the Oenus and Eurotas valleys leading from Arcadia, its northern neighbour, and the Langada Pass over Mt Taygetus connecting Laconia and Messenia. At the same time its distance from the sea-Sparta is 27 m. from its seaport, Gythium, made it invulnerable to a maritime attack. I.-HISTORY Prehistoric Period.-Tradition relates that Sparta was founded by Lacedaemon, son of Zeus and Taygete, who called the city after the name of his wife, the daughter of Eurotas. But Amyclae and Therapne (Therapnae) seem to have been in early times of greater importance than Sparta, the former a Minyan foundation a few miles to the south of Sparta, the latter probably the Achaean capital of Laconia and the seat of Menelaus, Agamemnon's younger brother. Eighty years after the Trojan War, according to the traditional chronology, the Dorian migration took place. A band of Dorians united with a body of Aetolians to cross the Corinthian Gulf and invade the Peloponnese from the northwest. The Aetolians settled in Elis, the Dorians pushed up to the headwaters of the Alpheus, where they divided into two forces, one of which under Cresphontes invaded and later subdued Messenia, while the other, led by Aristodemus or, according to another version, by his twin sons Eurysthenes and Procles, made its way down the Eurotas were new settlements were formed and gained Sparta, which became the Dorian capital of Laconia.

We provide an overview of the tick species found in Greece, as well as the most important tick-borne pathogens (viruses, bacteria, protozoa) and corresponding diseases in circulation. We also consider prevalence data, as well as geographic and climatic conditions. Knowledge of past and current situations of TBDs, as well as an awareness of (risk) factors affecting future developments will help to find approaches to integrated tick management as part of the ‘One Health Concept’; it will assist in avoiding the possibility of hotspot disease emergencies and intra- and intercontinental transmission.

Investment Incentives Peloponnese Region: Quick facts (I) Peloponnese, a region in southern Greece, includes the prefectures of Arcadia, Argolida, Korinthia, Lakonia, and Messinia •The Peloponnese region is one of the thirteen regions of Greece and covers 11.7% of the total area of the country •It covers most of the Peloponnese peninsula, except for the northwestern subregions of Achaea and Elis which belong to West Greece and a small portion of the Argolid peninsula that is part of Attica •On the west it is surrounded by the Ionian Sea and bordered by the Region of Western Greece, on the northeast it borders with the region of Attica, while on the east coast it is surrounded by the Sea of Myrtoo • The Region has a total area of about 15,490 square kilometers of which 2,154 km² occupied by the prefecture of Argolida, 4,419 km² by the prefecture4.   • Structural Change and Productivity Growth in Greek Regions
    STRUCTURAL CHANGE AND PRODUCTIVITY GROWTH IN GREEK REGIONS Serafeim Polyzos, Dionysios Minetos University of Thessaly, School of Engineering, Department of Planning and Regional Development Abstract This paper provides an overview of recent developments in the Greek regional economies by analysing structural changes and patterns of productivity. In particular, we examine firstly the long-term changes in the specialization of regional production and secondly the effects of recent structural changes on the growth of labour productivity at the NUTS III administrative level. Using Location quotients we estimate the real development of 12 economic sectors in the Greek regional economy in an attempt to uncover the kind of economic specialization of spatial units. In addition, by means of a shift – share analysis we investigate how aggregate growth is linked to differential growth of labour productivity at the sectoral level and to the re-allocation of labour between industries. Shift – share analysis is used for both decomposing productivity changes within the regional economy over a specific period of time into mutually exclusive factors and to paint a picture of how well the region's current industries are performing by systematically examining the national, local, and industrial components of productivity change. In addition a further analysis is conducted in order to investigate likely correlations between productivity growth and a number of selective regional economic indicators.
