rthur Sager, one of our revered Old Guard faculty members, taught a public speaking class to seniors with simple advice Aon how to craft a compelling speech: Tell them what you are going to say, say it, and then tell them what you said. I know I have since forgotten how to conjugate a Latin verb and how to solve a quadratic equation, but I have never forgotten Art’s timeless wisdom — wisdom that might have prepared me for later life better than anything I tried to learn from textbooks. It might seem odd to admit that at this distinguished boarding school that prides itself in academic rigor, the real lessons learned are the ones that help build character and develop personal relationships in everyday life on our campus. Those opportunities come along subtly and perhaps imperceptively to our students. Young people do not fully appreciate that unwritten curriculum until they are beyond our halls and look back to what they had here during their time as students. Our carefully scribed mission statement has a few key words, among which are: “enduring relationships with teachers” and “a thoughtful balance of academics, athletics, arts and service to others.” The two phrases are inextricably linked, aren’t they? It is our teachers who are at the center of everything that our students value during their years here. Our long and honored tradition of the master teacher is what keeps all of us graduates coming home to Byfield year after year, and what interests our parents so much when they sign the enrollment contracts for their children. The men and women who make up our faculty and staff are so dedicated to this school and its well-being that it can be said that their work is a “calling” and not just a job. This, and everything else that makes our school so unique, costs a great deal of money to perpetuate from one generation to the next. The sources of funding are not infinite by any means, and we are so very grateful to each donor for the generous support that our school receives. Without these essential funds, the Academy would be very different, and a lesser place. So, taking Art Sager’s three steps of a good speech to heart, let me present my topic in three distinct phrases: Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Outright Gifts Residence or Farm

Donors may transfer cash and other assets directly to the Academy Donors may give a personal residence or farm to The Govenor’s for immediate use in funding any of the needs of the Campaign or Academy while retaining the right to occupy the residence or operate the Annual Fund. Such gifts can be made by check or in the form the farm. Naming The Governor’s Academy as the primary beneficiary of a life insurance policy is another giving option. This enables the donor to retain ownership of the policy and have access to the policy’s cash value. This type of gift can reduce your estate tax liability. Should you wish a more immediate tax benefit, you may name The Governor’s Academy as the owner of the policy. This becomes an irrevocable assignment of all rights in the insurance policy to The Academy. You are allowed an immediate federal income tax charitable deduction.

Charitable Lead Trust

This type of trust provides for a gift of payments from the trust property to The Governor’s Academy for a term of years, after which the property reverts to you or passes to a non-charitable beneficiary designated by you. The charitable lead trust, depending upon the manner in which it is structured, can significantly reduce or even eliminate either the gift or estate tax.
