The following is a record of the portraits, busts, statues, bas-reliefs and tablets, that have been placed in or about the State House, Boston, in honor of Governors and others, prominent in Plymouth and history, together with those whose names are enrolled in the frescoes and stained glass windows; also the mural paintings. The names of all the Governors, from the settlement of and , through the State Constitution to the present, also the Presidents of the Senate and Speakers of the House of Representatives, from 1780 to the present, are given, with an asterisk to signify the portraits not yet in the collection.

Beacon Monument, erected by the Association in 1898 and presented to the Com­ monwealth June 17, 1899. The original Beacon was erected by an order of the General Court March 4, 1634-35. A Doric column, designed by , was erected in 1710, by the voluntary contri­ bution of the citizens of Boston; removed in 1811, when the hill was cut down. The four slate tablets in its base, commemorating the “ events which led to the and finally secured liberty and independence to the United States” , are in the stone reproduction.

The stained glass skylight, in the corridor, rear of Doric Hall, has “ Liberty” in the center, surrounded by the names of the Republics of Hellas, Helvetia, , , , Iceland, Holland, Andorra, San Marino and Rome, with the seals of “ Mattachusets Bay in Nova Anglia” and “ Plimouth Nov Anglia” . The Colony seal and State coat-of-arms are carved in the marble, in the Senate Staircase Hall. The Colony, Province and Magna Charta seals, and the State coat-of-arms are in the stained glass window main staircase. The National coat- of-arms is in the House of Representatives. The State coat-of-arms is also in the Council Chamber, the Senate, Senate Reception Room, House of Representatives, on the balconies of the Wings and the Derne Street gate. The coat-of-arms of Boston, England, is on the Bowdoin Street gate. The dates “ 1620, 1775 and 1861 ” are wrought in the ceiling of the State Library. The coved ceiling in the House of Representatives contains the names of the Coun­ ties of the Commonwealth. The cathedral glass in the dome of Memorial Hall has the coats-of-arms of the thirteen original States, surrounded by a bronze cornice with the eagles of the Republic. The five windows in the south wall of the Extension are emblematic of manufactures, commerce, education, fisheries and agriculture. (Resolves 1900, ch. 52.) The pendants in the dome of the Senate chamber contain emblems of commerce, agriculture, war and peace. The mirror over the fireplace in the Governor’s private office is ornamented with a bust of George Washington, and in the Council Chamber are the caduceus and cap of liberty, representing peace and freedom, the scale and sword of justice, emblems of executive power, the golden star representing one State in the Union. The Doric, Ionic and Corinthian orders of architecture, the egg and dart mould­ ing, the acanthus leaf, shell, fleur-de-lis, oak and laurel are evidenced throughout the State House. Of the marbles, there is Massachusetts, Vermont, Italian, Greek, Antique Afri­ can, Belgian black, Black and gold Italian, Cippolino, Connemara, French gray, Languedoc, Onyx, Pavonazzo, Rouge Jasper, Shell, Siena, , Vert Campan, Istrian, Numidian, Travatine.
