Page 33 Chapter 8 The Stamp Act and Methods of Protest espite the many arguments made against it, the Stamp Act was passed and scheduled to be enforced on November 1, 1765. The colonists found ever more vigorous and violent ways to D protest the Act. In Virginia, a tall backwoods lawyer, Patrick Henry, made a fiery speech and pushed five resolutions through the Virginia Assembly. In Boston, an angry mob inspired by Sam Adams and the Sons of Liberty destroyed property belonging to a man rumored to be a Stamp agent and to Lt. Governor Thomas Hutchinson. In New York, delegates from nine colonies, sitting as the Stamp Act Congress, petitioned the King and Parliament for repeal. In Philadelphia, New York, and other seaport towns, merchants pledged not to buy or sell British goods until the hated stamp tax was repealed. This storm of resistance and protest eventually had the desired effect. Stamp sgents hastily resigned their Commissions and not a single stamp was ever sold in the colonies. Meanwhile, British merchants petitioned Parliament to repeal the Stamp Act. In 1766, the law was repealed but replaced with the Declaratory Act, which stated that Parliament had the right to make laws binding on the colonies "in all cases whatsoever." The methods used to protest the Stamp Act raised issues concerning the use of illegal and violent protest, which are considered in this chapter. Adams, John (19 Oct. 1735-4 July 1826), second president of the United States, diplomat, and political theorist, was born in Braintree (now Quincy), Massachusetts, the son of John Adams (1691-1760), a shoemaker, selectman, and deacon, and Susanna Boylston. He claimed as a young man to have indulged in "a constant dissipation among amusements," such as swimming, fishing, and especially shooting, and wished to be a farmer. However, his father insisted that he follow in the footsteps of his uncle Joseph Adams, attend Harvard College, and become a clergyman. John consented, applied himself to his studies, and developed a passion for learning but refused to become a minister. He felt little love for "frigid John Calvin" and the rigid moral standards expected of New England Congregationalist ministers. John Adams. After a painting by Gilbert Stuart. So despite the disadvantages of becoming a lawyer, "fumbling and racking amidst the rubbish of writs . pleas, ejectments" and often fomenting "more quarrels than he composes," enriching "himself at the expense of impoverishing others more honest and deserving," Adams fixed on the law as an avenue to "glory" through obtaining "the more important offices of the State." Even in his youth, Adams was aware he possessed a "vanity," which he sought to sublimate in public service: "Reputation ought to be the perpetual subject of my thoughts, and the aim of my behaviour." Adams began reading law with attorney James Putnam in Worcester immediately after graduation from Harvard College in 1755. -

THE Pennsylvania Magazine OF HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHY Governor John Blackwell: His Life in England and Ireland OHN BLACKWELL is best known to American readers as an early governor of Pennsylvania, the most recent account of his J governorship having been published in this Magazine in 1950. Little, however, has been written about his services to the Common- wealth government, first as one of Oliver Cromwell's trusted cavalry officers and, subsequently, as his Treasurer at War, a position of considerable importance and responsibility.1 John Blackwell was born in 1624,2 the eldest son of John Black- well, Sr., who exercised considerable influence on his son's upbringing and activities. John Blackwell, Sr., Grocer to King Charles I, was a wealthy London merchant who lived in the City and had a country house at Mortlake, on the outskirts of London.3 In 1640, when the 1 Nicholas B. The Long-ago Squadrons of Cambridge Michael Kenney Cambridge Historical Commission January 2017 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This project was triggered by noting a curious description of early land divisions in Cambridge — “squadrons” — while reading an early draft of Building Old Cambridge. Co-author Charles M. Sullivan suggested that I investigate the use of that term in colonial Massachusetts. The results of that investigation are presented in this paper. Thanks are due to Sullivan, and also to his British colleague Roger Thompson. Others who aided my research with their comments included Christopher J. Lenney and Brian Donahue whose contributions are noted in the text. The reconstructed map appears in Building Old Cambridge. Sara Kenney gave a careful reading and many helpful suggestions. “Squadrons” is a curious term that shows up in the early records of Cambridge and a number of other towns in Middlesex County and eastern Worcester County. Its curiousness comes from the fact that not only is it a term that had disappeared from use by the late 1700s and apparently appears nowhere else, but also that its origin is obscure. In Cambridge it was used in 1683, 1707 and 1724 to describe divisions of land. Recent research in other town histories finds that “squadron” was used either for that purpose or to describe what soon became known as school districts. In only three of the towns studied so far did it have the military significance which it has today, and which it had in England as early as 1562. Left unanswered is the question of why this term appeared in New England by 1636 (in Watertown) and had disappeared by 1794 (in Chelmsford) — and why it was apparently used only in Middlesex County and nearby Worcester County, as well as one very early use in New Haven, Connecticut. -

LEAMON T he Search for Security Maine after Penobscot The Penobscot campaign of 1779 made little impact on the military outcome of the American Revolution. The focus of military action was shifting to the southern states when the British seized Bagaduce (Castine) at the mouth of the Penobscot River and defeated the expedition dispatched by Massachusetts to drive them out.1 For people in the District of Maine, however, the Penobscot defeat represented a calamity of the first order. During the rest of the war, they had to contend with a garrison of regular British troops in their midst. To Bagaduce flocked loyalists who, with a vigor sharpened by vengeance, joined the regulars in plundering the coast. Active loyalist participation injected a new note of personal vindictiveness in what now became a civil war. Amid internal dissension and a growing sense of isolation and despair, unified defense collapsed throughout the District. -
