T The New York City Department of Education (DOE) is looking for a few good parents to serve on Community Education Councils (CECs) and Citywide Education Councils, which offer the opportunity to help shape the policies and priorities of the city’s public schools. Parents who serve as council members will assess district needs, work directly with Regional Superintendents and provide feedback to DOE Chancellor Carmen Fariña. Topics such as school zone boundaries, budgets and school policies are discussed at monthly meetings. Franklin Thomas: CiviC leader, rebound Champion

Before Franklin Thomas was the widely admired president and CEO of the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation and then president of the Ford Foundation, he made history at Colum- bia. Coming to Morningside Heights from Franklin K. Lane High School in Brooklyn on an academic rather than athletic scholarship, Thomas was a star center in the mid-1950s, cleaning the glass like no other Lion has ever done. He finished his Columbia career as both the single-season and career rebounding leader—records that stand to- day, 60 years later. In the 1955-56 season, Thomas was voted both the most valuable player and the first African American to captain an Ivy League bas- ketball team. As a student leader off the court, he worked with Columbia’s NAACP organization to help increase admissions of African Americans at the University.

A 1956 graduate of Columbia College, Thomas also earned a law degree from Columbia in 1963 after serving four years as a navigator in the United States Air Force. He has been awarded prizes and honors from many institutions, including his Alma Mater, which has conferred on Thomas an honorary degree, the John Jay Award for public service, the Alexander Hamilton Award for distinguished service to Columbia and the alumni Medal of Excellence. Like his rebounding records, his career of civic leadership and service to New York City has spanned decades and continues to this day.

Director Yerany Marasco has been hosting cafecitos at ACDP’s Audubon Youth Program. Her cafecitos are open to all parents and caretakers of children between the ages of 5 to 18. Yerany wanted to learn about the needs of local families in an informal, open setting. The discussions help ACDP’s staff prioritize what kinds of resources are needed for parents. “We want to be able to empower parents and provide them with knowledge to advocate for themselves and their children,” said Marasco, whose own experience as an immigrant from the Dominican Republic helps her relate to her clients’ needs. It is also a networking opportunity for the parents in the community. So far, the group has hosted workshops on housing, higher education, and parents’ rights – and there are more to come. “We wanted to be more creative and get involved in a different way.”
