WORKSHOP LEADERS AND SPEAKERS Arabic to English group: Jonathan Wright Jonathan Wright is a British journalist and literary translator. He joined Reuters news agency in 1980 as a correspondent, and has been based in the Middle East for most of the last three decades. He has served as Reuters' Cairo bureau chief, and he has lived and worked throughout the region, including in Egypt, Sudan, Lebanon, Tunisia and the Gulf. From 1998 to 2003, he was based in Washington, DC, covering U.S. foreign policy for Reuters. For two years until the fall of 2011 Wright was editor of the Arab Media & Society Journal, published by the Kamal Adham Center for Journalism Training and Research at the American University in Cairo. Elisabeth Jaquette Elisabeth Jaquette is a translator from the Arabic and Executive Director of the American Literary Translators Association (ALTA). Her work has been shortlisted for the TA First Translation Prize, longlisted for the Best Translated Book Award, and supported by several English PEN Translates Awards, a Jan Michalski Foundation residency, and the PEN/Heim Translation Fund. She has also served as a judge for numerous translation prizes, including most recently the National Book Award for Translated Literature. Elisabeth’s book-length translations include The Queue by Basma Abdel Aziz (Melville House), Thirteen Months of Sunrise by Rania Mamoun (Comma Press), and The Apartment in Bab el-Louk by Donia Maher (Darf Publishers). Le Prix De La Littérature Arabe 2019
Communiqué de presse Paris, le 7 novembre 2019 Le Prix de la littérature arabe 2019 (doté de 10 000 €), créé par l’Institut du monde arabe et la Fondation Jean-Luc Lagardère, est décerné à l’écrivain égyptien Mohammed Abdelnabi pour son roman La Chambre de l’araignée (Actes Sud / Sindbad) traduit de l’arabe (Égypte) par Gilles Gauthier Le jury, présidé par Pierre Leroy, cogérant de Lagardère SCA, et composé de personnalités du monde des médias, des arts et de la culture ainsi que de spécialistes du monde arabe, a élu, à l’unanimité, le texte de Mohammed Abdelnabi, saluant « un écrivain audacieux au style affirmé et percutant qui fait plonger le lecteur au cœur des tabous de la société égyptienne et arabe. Un roman qui se veut une ode à la tolérance et à l’humanisme. » A l’occasion de la cérémonie de remise du prix, le 6 novembre 2019 à l’IMA, Jack Lang, Président de l’Institut, a rappelé le caractère unique du Prix et son rôle essentiel en tant que « caisse de résonnance pour les écrivains qui témoignent de l’extraordinaire vitalité de la littérature contemporaine arabe ». Pour Pierre Leroy, Président du Jury du Prix : « Transformant un événement précis en un vibrant plaidoyer pour la tolérance, Mohammed Abdelnabi accomplit ce qui peut être l’une des raisons de la littérature : porter un message politique dans l’espoir de faire évoluer la société ». The present study focuses only on one aspect - the translation of metaphor in selected poems of Mahmoud Darwish. Arabic is widely known as a strongly metaphorical language, and Darwish’s poems as part of Arabic literature hold many embedded meanings and metaphors that play a major role in building up their artistic flavour. -

Women and Gender in the Middle East and North Africa, WMST345-01/INTL200-01 Mondays and Wednesdays 2:30-3:50, Knapp Hall 409 Denison University, Fall 2007 Instructor: Isis Nusair Email: [email protected] Office: Knapp Hall 210C, Phone: (740) 587-8537 Office Hours: Mondays and Wednesdays 4:30-6 Course Description This course investigates contemporary feminist thinking and practice in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), and provides students with the ability to understand, critique, and comparatively analyze the politics of gender in the MENA region. The class covers current debates on the status of women, and closely examines the processes by which the private/public lives of women are gendered. It addresses women's visibility in society and the development or lack thereof of women's and feminist movements. The main themes covered in the course include colonization, women and the state, citizenship, nationalism, religion, sexuality, representation, development, militarization, human rights, and women’s movements. The course focuses on the following countries: Algeria, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, and Saudi Arabia. The class is interdisciplinary and uses feminist pedagogy to challenge orientalist, monolithic, and Eurocentric notions of studying the region and particularly the status of women. It gives equal weight to theory and practice and draws on writings by local and global activists and theorists. Class Requirements Students in addition to reading the course material, attending screening sessions, and participating in class discussions will monitor at least one media outlet and trace the representation of women and gender in the Middle East and North Africa. -

The Representation of the Iraq War in Selected Anglo-American and Iraqi Novels Pshtiwan Faraj Mohammed A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Arts and Humanities Brunel University London November 2015 Abstract This thesis explores representation of the Iraq War in selected Anglo-American and Iraqi novels, examining how several authors have employed this theme in their narratives. The featured novelists are chosen from many writers who focus their efforts and their writing on this conflict. Criterion for selection included offering a critique of the diverse perspectives from which the conflict was perceived, the texts‘ engagement with the political conundrums underpinning war and its approach, how such fiction engages with a contemporary audience and what perspective are deployed to do so. Their public visibility provides the basis of one interpretative strand of the thesis. This study also explores and conceptualises how this conflict has entered the cultural consciousness and to what degree the novels fictionalise the conflict as their main subject, and assesses through which thematic emphases. The texts chosen and to be analysed are pivotal to our understanding of contemporary Iraq and its recent history. It will be argued that the thematic content of these texts contextualise modern war‘s multiple effects within not only the fictional textual world, but as well as their imaginative characters these representations become part of the experience at least vicariously of the audiences who read them. The texts discussed in subsequent chapters are either originally written in, or translated into English (for publication), and therefore all available in English, one major criterion of textual selection. -
