WORKSHOP LEADERS AND SPEAKERS Arabic to English group: Jonathan Wright Jonathan Wright is a British journalist and literary translator. He joined Reuters news agency in 1980 as a correspondent, and has been based in the Middle East for most of the last three decades. He has served as Reuters' Cairo bureau chief, and he has lived and worked throughout the region, including in Egypt, Sudan, Lebanon, Tunisia and the Gulf. From 1998 to 2003, he was based in Washington, DC, covering U.S. foreign policy for Reuters. For two years until the fall of 2011 Wright was editor of the Arab Media & Society Journal, published by the Kamal Adham Center for Journalism Training and Research at the American University in Cairo. Elisabeth Jaquette Elisabeth Jaquette is a translator from the Arabic and Executive Director of the American Literary Translators Association (ALTA). Her work has been shortlisted for the TA First Translation Prize, longlisted for the Best Translated Book Award, and supported by several English PEN Translates Awards, a Jan Michalski Foundation residency, and the PEN/Heim Translation Fund. She has also served as a judge for numerous translation prizes, including most recently the National Book Award for Translated Literature. Elisabeth’s book-length translations include The Queue by Basma Abdel Aziz (Melville House), Thirteen Months of Sunrise by Rania Mamoun (Comma Press), and The Apartment in Bab el-Louk by Donia Maher (Darf Publishers). Forthcoming in 2020 are The Frightened Ones by Dima Wannous (Harvill Secker/Knopf) and Minor Detail by Adania Shibli (Fitzcarraldo/New Directions). Arab American Literature and the Ethnic American Landscape: Language, Identity, and Community A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department English and Comparative Literature of the College of Arts and Sciences by Niven Herro, B.A., M.A. July 2018 Committee Chair: Jennifer Glaser, Ph.D. Committee Members: Lisa Hogeland, Ph.D., Laura Micciche, Ph.D. Abstract This dissertation explores the works of contemporary Arab American women writers with a focus on language, identity, and community. I am especially interested in the ways in which the Arab American immigrant experience mirrors that of other ethnic American groups, as demonstrated in their literatures. First, I argue that Randa Jarrar’s debut novel, A Map of Home (2008), which uses language—both Arabic and English—as a source of empowerment, reflects Chicana writer Gloria Anzaldúa’s concept of the “new mestiza consciousness.” Comparing the Chinatown community in Fae Myenne Ng’s Bone (1993), to the Muslim community in Mohja Kahf’s The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf (2006), reveals the complicated relationships the novels’ characters have with their communities. In both novels, the personal development of their young women protagonists is greatly influenced by their respective communities, which simultaneously serve as positive sites of support and complex sites of difficult negotiations. While the characters in A Map of Home and The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf ultimately learn to effectively navigate their hybrid subject positions as both Arabs and Americans, the failure to do so leads to a tragic end for the couple at the center of Laila Halaby’s Once in a Promised Land. -

HISHAM MATAR / [email protected] Overview Whether seen as a chronicle of social life, a hothouse of ideas and philosophical contemplation, a space for literary invention and the articulation of the quiet as well as the loud moments of existence, the novel is, in its various shapes and forms, a modern phenomenon. Perhaps this is partly why for long time there persisted, both in the minds of some Western and Arabic readers, the notion that the genre is a European invention, and therefore, the Arabic novel in particular, an act of literary mimicry. This is not only erroneous, but it also misses what is actually fascinating about the story of the novel in Arabic. It is a story that tells of a deep engagement with a great literary tradition as well as a commitment to invention. -

Esposito Received: 6 August 2015 / Accepted: 23 September 2015 / Published: 5 November 2015 Abstract: This articles explores the explosion of artistic production in the Arab world during the so-called Arab Spring. Focusing on music, poetry, theatre, and graffiti and related visual arts, I explore how these “do-it-yourself” scenes represent, at least potentially, a “return of the aura” to the production of culture at the edge of social and political transformation. At the same time, the struggle to retain a revolutionary grounding in the wake of successful counter-revolutionary moves highlights the essentially “religious” grounding of “committed” art at the intersection of intense creativity and conflict across the Arab world.
