Cleavages in Contemporary Finland
Jussi Westinen Cleavages in Contemporary Finland A Study on Party-Voter Ties What kind of a cleavage structure is there in Finland? How are party choice, social structural positions and values and attitudes of the voters entangled with Jussi Westinen each other? The author examines these questions in | 2015 in Contemporary | Cleavages Finland Westinen Jussi this study by analyzing data from the 2003, 2007 and 2011 Finnish National Election Studies. The results Cleavages in Contemporary Finland indicate that the overall effect of social structural positions on values and attitudes is rather weak. A Study on Party-Voter Ties Despite this, a few rather strong connections be- tween these two cleavage elements were identified and they were also linked to voters’ choice of a party. The study implies that old cleavages, those based on native language, type of residential area and occupa- tional class, still exist. The political parties involved in these cleavages are largely the old ones. The volatile parliamentary election in 2011 not only destabi- lized the party system but also renewed the Finnish cleavage structure. The conflict that is based on both occupational class and education and that is reflected in the sociocultural and EU dimensions has the most potential to evolve as a cleavage. By assessing the contemporary cleavages in Finland, the study highlights the similarities and dissimilari- ties in the conflict structure between Finland and other West European countries. The cleavages based on native language and the type of residential area accentuate the specialty of the Finnish case while the potentially emerging cleavages accentuate the more common sources of contlict. -

Applying constructionist social problems theory, it discusses the constructions of communism as a religious social problem, Christian piety as a solution to the problem of godless communism, and the religious legitimation of violence. The article argues that by identifying Christianity with the Finnish nation the construction of communism as a religious problem—itself an outcome of the influence of revivalist Lutheran ministers in the leadership of the movement—resonated with the broader audience, but that this indigenous religious nationalism lost support with the increasing belligerence of the movement. At the end of the 1920s Finland was a divided country. The Civil War of 1918, fought between the socialist “Reds” and the bourgeois and agrarian “Whites” in the aftermath of independence from (now Bolshevik) Russia, was a cultural trauma on par with the Spanish Civil War.1 The proportional death toll in the repression of the defeated Reds exceeded that of all other European civil conflicts in the inter-war era.2 Yet, despite the victory and the official banning of the Communist Party, some factions on the White side saw the re-emergence and 1 Sami Koskelainen has a Bachelor of Arts from University College London, School of Slavonic and East European Studies. -

Aber das zweite? Das hätte der Autor vor einem Jahr auch nicht gewusst. Das „kleine und mutige Finnland“ (Väinö Linna)1, Land von HolzfällerInnen und Han- dydesignerInnen, ist die richtige Antwort. Schon beim Begriff der „finnischen Revolution“ werden die meisten an irgendeine technische Erneuerung von No- kia denken. Doch Finnland hatte eine eigene Rote Armee! Vor 91 Jahren, im Januar 1918, nahm die finnische ArbeiterInnenklasse die Macht in ihre Hände, um Unabhängigkeit für ihr Land und Gerechtigkeit für sei- ne EinwohnerInnen zu erkämpfen. Die Bourgeoisie schlug mit voller Kraft zu- rück – ob finnisch, schwedisch, russisch oder deutsch, sie hielten alle zusammen gegen die finnischen ArbeiterInnen – und ermordeten mindestens 20.000 Rote. Auch wenn das heutige Finnland ein Vorbild sozialer Ruhe zu sein scheint, fin- den sich vereinzelt Spuren dieser Vergangenheit. Die meisten FinnInnen, abge- sehen von den wenigen KommunistInnen, reden ungern darüber. International ist die finnische Revolution auch unter Linken kaum bekannt. Oikeistoradikalismin nousu sai aikaan tilanteen, jossa tasavaltalainen valtiojärjestys oli uhattuna. Oikeiston uhka kiteytyi kansalaisliikkeessä, jota kutsuttiin lapuanliikkeeksi. Käsittelen tutkimuksessani lapuanliikkeen aikaa, pääpiirteissään marraskuusta 1929 huhtikuuhun 1932. Kansallinen Edistyspuolue, jonka nuorsuomalaiset tasavaltalaiset olivat perustaneet joulukuussa 1918, seisoi vahvasti laillisuuden takana. As non-native English speaker I have used my own dialect, Finglish. I hope it will not prevent your reading too much. All translations from Finnish to English are mine and not yet corrected. 1. Introduction The aim of the paper is to analyze the reception of the Old Testament (term Old Testament follows the language of the studied sources) in Finland during the Second World War. Specific period of the study is the latter part of year 1941 and the data analyzed is Kotimaa –newspaper and Finnish theological journal Teologinen Aikakauskirja (Finnish Journal of Theology). In 1941 Kotimaa was a church oriented newspaper published twice a week, each issue having four pages. Teologinen Aikakauskirja contained all together 513 pages in 1941: scholarly and professionally oriented articles, reviews and actual short notices. The research question is as follows: how the Hebrew Bible texts about the land and conquest were used in the Finnish war context. The presupposition before the analysis was that there are similarities and connections between Finnish texts and the Hebrew Bible conquest stories in Joshua and Judeges. The expected common theme was God’s guidance in the conquest of land, the land taken from the enemies and given to Israelites/Finns; a central theme in the Deuteronomistic History (DH) and the burning issue in the Finnish war context. -

chapter 7 Regional Consolidation of Party Support The character of the territorial integration (see Chapter 4) explains much of the basic variation in Finnish political ecology. It created crucial preconditions for the national and class integration consolidated after the political mobilisation of 1905. 1 Regions as Loci of Party Systems Interpretations of regional variations in political mobilisation commonly start with mobilisation itself. They begin by looking at geographic voting patterns, for example, and then compare them with other distributions – the proportion of the rural proletariat, or the areas of small, medium, and large farms, and so forth. If the fit between the two maps is good, the latter structural variables serve to explain the distribution of the vote.1 In Finland, explanations given for the main regional variation in party sup- port are based, naturally enough, on differences in the social structure of the agrarian population in various regions. It has been shown that the areas of greatest Social Democratic support were those with the largest proportion of crofters, industrial and agrarian workers, and people without permanent occu- pations,2 making up a zone running from the south-west to the north-east and extending into the far north. Similarly, the fact that the Agrarian Union (and before it the Young Finns) received greater support in the zone running from the south-east to the north-west, and also extending into the far north, than in the country as a whole has been explained by reference to the large num- ber of medium-sized and small farms in this zone.
