Ueber die Geschichte, die Lage und die Denkmäler der rhodisch kretischen Pflanzstadt Gela und über die benachbarten Städte haben bis jetzt nur Wenige monographisch Untersuchungen und Bericht erstattet; wie es scheint, aus leicht erkennbaren Gründen. Da die Stadt Gela (die wir immer als Mittelpunkt unserer Arbeit fest halten) schon im Alterthum zerstört und aufgehoben ist und daher kein heutiger Ort sich in geschiohtlicher Continuität mit ihr weiss, so hat sich auch keine Gemeinde unmittelbar aus Patriotismus zur Erforschung der alten Geschichte derselben angetrieben gefühlt. Zwar ist über den Besitz des zu erbenden geschiohtlichen Glanzes zwischen den beiden Nacbbarstädten Licata und Terranova ein heftiger Kampf entbrannt, welcher mit einer für den Nordländer unbegreiHiche~ glühenden Leidenschaft geruhrt wird. Der Reisende erlebt hinsichtlich desselben nicht nur ergötzliche Dinge, nnd hÖl't noch erstaunlichere Erzählungen, sondern er geräth, wenn er sich hier oder dort bestimmt zu Gunsten der entgegengesetzten Ansicht ausspricht, in GefH.bI'. Aber dieser Streit wird meist nur mit dem Munde oder vermittelaJ; privater und öffentlichel' Demonstrationen geführt, und wenn er auch eine Literatur erzeugt hat, so ermangelt diese meist der Erudition und des wissenschaftlichen Charakters, so dass diejenigen Bücher, welche mir wenigstens zu Gesicht gekommen sind, ohne weiteres zu den Todteu geworfen werden können. Für Unhetbeiligtel'e hat wohl weder die Gegend Reiz genug ausgeübt, noch auch mag die Specialgeschichte dieser südlichen Gegenden besonders anziehend geschienen haben, von wel cher zu wenig bekannt ist, als dass man sich ein Bild fortschreitender Entwioklung entwerfen könnte. The Interpretation of Plato's Hippias Major”
Abstract Travis John Mulroy “Delusions of Grandeur: The Interpretation of Plato's Hippias Major” My dissertation is an interpretation of Plato’s Hippias Major, in which Socrates investigates τό καλόν (usually translated as “the beautiful” or “the noble”). My reading of the Hippias Major focuses on the importance of appearing beautiful, to others and thereby to oneself, and reveals the way in which the impulse to appear beautiful is connected to the desire for the immortal preservation of oneself and one’s own. The impulse to appear beautiful is essential to political life, insofar as the pleasure of praise effects a kind of harmony between the private good and the common. This impulse, however, is also a fundamental impediment to Socratic philosophy, as it prevents the critical examination of oneself and one’s opinions, while hindering a truly erotic experience of the beautiful. In examining these issues, my dissertation seeks to establish the Hippias Major’s connection to and consonance with other more popular Platonic dialogues, such as the Republic, Symposium, and Phaedo. It defends the claim that noesis of the eidos of the beautiful can only be accomplished within the life of philosophical eros, that is, within the life of eros which is directed toward the good. As such this dissertation aims both to provide an interpretive key to the Hippias Major, allowing us to read the dialogue in a rich and novel way, and also to make the claim that the Hippias Major presents us with a picture of the interrelation between eros, philosophy, and beauty, and about how these three elements manifest themselves in human life. -

Labyrinth a Covered Maze Built at Cnossos in Crete to House The
L Labdacus (Λάϐδακος). Son of Polydorus, king of Thebes, grandson of Cadmus and grandfather of Oedipus. Because he was still a child when his father died, *Nycteus and then *Lycus ruled for him as regents. When he came of age, he ruled briefly in his own right but died prematurely, leaving an infant son, *Laius. According to Apollodorus, he lost his life because he was 'of the same mind as *Pentheus', which presumably means that he opposed Dionysus as Pentheus had done. The only event recorded for his reign was a boundary-war with the Athenians, in which *Pandion defeated him with the aid of his Thracian ally Tereus. [Apollodorus 3.5.5, 14.8; Pausanias 9.5.2] Labours of Heracles (Ἡρακλέους ἄθλοι). The twelve labours performed by Heracles when he was in the service of *Eurystheus were connected with (1) the Nemean lion, (2) the Lernean hydra, (3) the Cerynitian hind, (4) the Erymanthian boar, (5) the Augean stables, (6) the Stymphalian birds, (7) the Cretan bull, (8) the mares of Diomedes, (9) the girdle of Hippolyte, the Amazon, (10) the cattle of Geryon, (11) the apples of the Hesperides and (12) Cerberus, the three-headed dog of Hades. The first six took place in the Peloponnese, the seventh in Crete, the eighth in northern Greece in Thrace, the ninth in the north-east by the Black Sea, and the last three in the far west. There should only have been ten labours, but Eurystheus discounted the second and third. For the details see Heracles. Labyrinth (Λαϐύρινθος). A covered maze built at Cnossus in Crete to house the Minotaur, which lived at its centre; it was constructed by *Daedalus at the request of Minos. -

The book of Gods,Goddessess,Heroes and other Characters of Mythology In broad terms mythology is composed of traditional stories about gods, kings, and heroes. Myths often tell about the creation of the world (and about its destruction as well), about the creation of men, and, also, they provide lessons on a moral code by which to live. They were attempts to provide rationale to natural events and to human emotion. Mythological stories generally were passed on orally from generation to succeeding generation. Each tale, embellished and "corrupted" through the re-tellings, was probably a reasoned explanation of the facts as seen by unsophisticated and uneducated eyes. Most scholars today divide the subject into three categories: pure myth (primitive science and primitive religion), heroic saga (primitive history), and folklore (fictional stories).
