  • Archaic Eretria
    ARCHAIC ERETRIA This book presents for the first time a history of Eretria during the Archaic Era, the city’s most notable period of political importance. Keith Walker examines all the major elements of the city’s success. One of the key factors explored is Eretria’s role as a pioneer coloniser in both the Levant and the West— its early Aegean ‘island empire’ anticipates that of Athens by more than a century, and Eretrian shipping and trade was similarly widespread. We are shown how the strength of the navy conferred thalassocratic status on the city between 506 and 490 BC, and that the importance of its rowers (Eretria means ‘the rowing city’) probably explains the appearance of its democratic constitution. Walker dates this to the last decade of the sixth century; given the presence of Athenian political exiles there, this may well have provided a model for the later reforms of Kleisthenes in Athens. Eretria’s major, indeed dominant, role in the events of central Greece in the last half of the sixth century, and in the events of the Ionian Revolt to 490, is clearly demonstrated, and the tyranny of Diagoras (c. 538–509), perhaps the golden age of the city, is fully examined. Full documentation of literary, epigraphic and archaeological sources (most of which have previously been inaccessible to an English-speaking audience) is provided, creating a fascinating history and a valuable resource for the Greek historian. The Hawaiian happy face spider (Theridion grallator Simon, 1900), named for a remarkable abdominal colour pattern resembling a smiling face, has served as a model organism for under- standing the generation of genetic diversity. Theridion grallator is one of 11 endemic Hawaiian species of the genus reported to date. Asserting the origin of island endemics informs on the evolutionary context of diversification, and how diversity has arisen on the islands. Studies on the genus Theridion in Hawaii, as elsewhere, have long been hampered by its large size (> 600 species) and poor definition. Here we report results of phylogenetic analyses based on DNA sequences of five genes conducted on five diverse species of Hawaiian Theridion, along with the most intensive sampling of Theridiinae analysed to date. Results indicate that the Hawai- ian Islands were colonised by two independent Theridiinae lineages, one of which originated in the Americas. Both lineages have undergone local diversification in the archipelago and have convergently evolved similar bizarre morphs. Our findings confirm para- or polyphyletic status of the largest Theridiinae genera: Theridion, Achaearanea and Chrysso.

    Hesiod (8th or 7th c. BC, composed in Greek) The Homeric epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, are probably slightly earlier than Hesiod’s two surviving poems, the Works and Days and the Theogony. Yet in many ways Hesiod is the more important author for the study of Greek mythology. While Homer treats cer- tain aspects of the saga of the Trojan War, he makes no attempt at treating myth more generally. He often includes short digressions and tantalizes us with hints of a broader tra- dition, but much of this remains obscure. Hesiod, by contrast, sought in his Theogony to give a connected account of the creation of the universe. For the study of myth he is im- portant precisely because his is the oldest surviving attempt to treat systematically the mythical tradition from the first gods down to the great heroes. Also unlike the legendary Homer, Hesiod is for us an historical figure and a real per- sonality. His Works and Days contains a great deal of autobiographical information, in- cluding his birthplace (Ascra in Boiotia), where his father had come from (Cyme in Asia Minor), and the name of his brother (Perses), with whom he had a dispute that was the inspiration for composing the Works and Days. His exact date cannot be determined with precision, but there is general agreement that he lived in the 8th century or perhaps the early 7th century BC. His life, therefore, was approximately contemporaneous with the beginning of alphabetic writing in the Greek world. Although we do not know whether Hesiod himself employed this new invention in composing his poems, we can be certain that it was soon used to record and pass them on.

    An Anthology of Mediocre Metamorphoses Dear audience, dear Jonathan, We gathered today under this drowsy grey skey to celebrate together - I see parents, family, friends, strangers and most important, Jonathan, who worked for the past four years on the marvellous publication, called ‘366’ that will be presented today. I was a close witness of the process towards this book, from the first set of drawings to the final, alluring design as a boxed book. Therefore I cannot stress enough how joyful and honoured I am to be standing here, in front of you, on this festive occasion. I wrote a text today about my two favourite books of the moment (and in extent of all times), the Metamorphoses by Ovid on the one hand and 366 by Jonathan Paepens on the other hand, complementing each towards the culmination of an anthology, which I will recite for you today, as in now. This text is titled An Anthology of Mediocre Metamorphoses, a name which can benefit from some etymological context. An anthology is a collection of poems or epigrams of various writers, arranged as an abundant and reverbing flowerpiece. The word itself derives from the two ancient greek components, as in Anthos -which translates to flower and Logos -which means word. An anthology therefore is a flourishing set of words and phrases, carefully composed and tied together as a beautiful bouquet. Mediocre entitles the state of being in a middle state but actually finds its roots in the antique language, ultimately combining the Latin medius with the Greek ocris, which literally means halfway up a mountain.

Homer’s Odyssey provides a critical recipient for such inquiry, and Purves has explored the construction of space in the poem with relation to its implications on Greek epic as a genre. This paper seeks to expand upon the spatial discourse on Homer’s Odyssey by pinpointing the modern geographic concept of power, tracing a term inspired by Michael Foucault, or a “cartography of power,” in the poem. In Chapter 2 I employ a narratological approach to examine power dynamics played out over specific spaces of Odysseus’ wanderings, and then on Ithaca, analyzing the intersection of space, power, knowledge, and deception. The second half of this chapter discusses the threshold of Odysseus’ palace and flows of power across spheres of gender and class.

The Ciris narrates the story of Scylla of Megara and how she betrayed her father, King Nisus, because of her love for Minos, King of Crete. While nurses are typical stock characters in Greek and Roman literature, I will show how the character of Carme becomes more than Scylla’s nurse. Over the generations, people never cease to be fascinated by the epic journeys of Odysseus. Scholars seem to be divided by the vivid descriptions of Odyssey’s exotic unknown lands, extreme nature’s forces, encounters with gods, semi-gods, unusual people and mythic monsters. The present paper examines the ancient texts and demonstrates a number of original tables in order to support the etymological and grammatical analysis of the characters. Aim of this research paper is to provide a highly original and yet accurate Linguistic and Etymological Analysis of the names of the main Heroes and Peoples of Odyssey. Then Autolycus said: “My daughter’s husband and my daughter, give him whatsoever name I say. For I have been angered with many over the fruitful earth, therefore let the child be named “Odysseus”. Odyssey, Rhapsody 19, Vss 407-410 1. Introduction The most skeptical researchers consider that Odyssey is an imaginary Epic, yet written in a distinguished, articulate manner. Other researchers set their faith in Homer, and initiate a number of researches, both in ancient texts, and excavations, in a way similar to the German Archaeologist, Heinrich Schliemann (1822-1890) who as a young boy, decided to visit Asia Minor to excavate Troy, and thus confirm the reality beneath Homer’s epic writings. Finally, a third group of researchers is skeptical about the ancient epics, but would be willing to change their mind should tangible evidence be found, either in the form of archaeological findings or logical conclusions from historical evidence.
