This articlereviews the literary accounts of the migration and presentsthe relevantarchaeological evidence, with a focuson newmaterial from Troy. No onearea played a dominantrole in colonizing Aiolis, nor is sucha widespread colonizationsupported by the archaeologicalrecord. But the aggressive promotionof migrationaccounts after the PersianWars provedmutually beneficialto bothsides of theAegean and justified the composition of the Delian League. Homer’s Odyssey provides a critical recipient for such inquiry, and Purves has explored the construction of space in the poem with relation to its implications on Greek epic as a genre. This paper seeks to expand upon the spatial discourse on Homer’s Odyssey by pinpointing the modern geographic concept of power, tracing a term inspired by Michael Foucault, or a “cartography of power,” in the poem. In Chapter 2 I employ a narratological approach to examine power dynamics played out over specific spaces of Odysseus’ wanderings, and then on Ithaca, analyzing the intersection of space, power, knowledge, and deception. The second half of this chapter discusses the threshold of Odysseus’ palace and flows of power across spheres of gender and class. -

TRANSFORMATIONS CLASS DISCUSSIONS FOR THE TEACHERS The Excellence Through Classics Resource Committee wants to provide you with some resources that you can use in your classroom to help foster a deeper understanding of the myths present in our exam. There is a debate currently occurring in classrooms about how to approach teaching myths that have underlying violence against women in them. Excellence Through Classics acknowledges that the way the D’Aulaires presented their stories erases these violent actions. Many myths about transformations are about how one character (god or human) breaks societal rules and expectations and often acts with hubris. These stories serve as warnings about how not to act in ancient Mediterranian society, like La Llorona of the Southwest, or the Boy Who Cried Wolf for children today. We should remember that the ancient Mediterranian had different rules of conduct than the modern world. So while these stories may have told a Greek boy, a Roman Girl, an Egyptian teenager or a Celtic baby how to act in their world, it does not always tell us how to act in ours. Poetry and mythology can also be seen as a way for the reader to understand and discuss problematic modern situations. Many of these stories in D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths are to Greek Mythology like the Disney version are to the German Fairy Tales, and some of the darker elements are masked or ignored completely. The Little Mermaid ends on a happy note in the Disney movie while Hans Christian Andersen’s original tale has a darker tone. -

In Greek mythology, the Trojan War was waged against the city of Troy by the Achaeans (Greeks) after Paris of Troy took Helen Trojan War from her husband Menelaus king of Sparta. The war is one of the most important events in Greek mythology and has been narrated through many works of Greek literature, most notably through Homer's Iliad. The Iliad relates a part of the last year of the siege of Troy; its sequel, the Odyssey describes Odysseus's journey home. Other parts of the war are described in a cycle of epic poems, which have survived through fragments. Episodes from the war provided material for Greek tragedy and other works of Greek literature, and for Roman poets including Virgil and Ovid. The war originated from a quarrel between the goddesses Athena, Hera, and Aphrodite, after Eris, the goddess of strife and discord, gave them a golden apple, sometimes known as the Apple of Discord, marked "for the fairest". Zeus sent the goddesses to Paris, who judged that Aphrodite, as the "fairest", should receive the apple. In exchange, Aphrodite made Helen, the most beautiful Achilles tending the wounded Patroclus of all women and wife of Menelaus, fall in love with Paris, who (Attic red-figure kylix, c. 500 BC) took her to Troy. Abstract This thesis is concerned with the ancient Greek conceptualization of fate and death, as explored through the figure of the daimon in literature from Homer and Hesiod to Plato and Euripides. Filling a gap in scholarship, I elucidate the spectrum of meaning inherent in the word daimon, and how it shifts over time. From the Archaic to the Classical period the word daimon is found as a synonym for theos, “god”, as a vocative address, or in reference to “fate” and the generalized “will of heaven.” At the same time, a particular group of divine personifications, including Thanatos, Moira, Ker, and Erinys are counted as daimones. We also find the term used to designate unnamed but individuated lesser divinities, guardian spirits, and demonic possessors, and even as the divine aspect of the self. In the early Archaic poets these latter categories are only nascent. The individuated daimon becomes the focus of the lyric poets and pre-Socratic philosophers; in the later pre-Socratics the daimon begins to be internalized, moving from possessive spirit to psychic force. -

Over the generations, people never cease to be fascinated by the epic journeys of Odysseus. Scholars seem to be divided by the vivid descriptions of Odyssey’s exotic unknown lands, extreme nature’s forces, encounters with gods, semi-gods, unusual people and mythic monsters. The present paper examines the ancient texts and demonstrates a number of original tables in order to support the etymological and grammatical analysis of the characters. Aim of this research paper is to provide a highly original and yet accurate Linguistic and Etymological Analysis of the names of the main Heroes and Peoples of Odyssey. Then Autolycus said: “My daughter’s husband and my daughter, give him whatsoever name I say. For I have been angered with many over the fruitful earth, therefore let the child be named “Odysseus”. Odyssey, Rhapsody 19, Vss 407-410 1. Introduction The most skeptical researchers consider that Odyssey is an imaginary Epic, yet written in a distinguished, articulate manner. Other researchers set their faith in Homer, and initiate a number of researches, both in ancient texts, and excavations, in a way similar to the German Archaeologist, Heinrich Schliemann (1822-1890) who as a young boy, decided to visit Asia Minor to excavate Troy, and thus confirm the reality beneath Homer’s epic writings. Finally, a third group of researchers is skeptical about the ancient epics, but would be willing to change their mind should tangible evidence be found, either in the form of archaeological findings or logical conclusions from historical evidence.
