“A tremendous find… Musicians of this calibre are like gold dust” The Herald. James Feddeck is rapidly becoming one of the most interesting and remarkable conductors of today, impressing orchestras with his innate talent and outstanding musicianship on both sides of the Atlantic. Of his recent debut with the Hallé, The Guardian noted that he stepped in “to salvage the concert with style and steel” and is “a conductor to watch”. Last season, Feddeck made his subscription series debut with Chicago Symphony Orchestra, “James Feddeck: a gifted conductor who's clearly going places … a model of firm musical purpose on the podium. His lucid beat and articulate gestures reflected an insightful understanding of the three stylistically disparate scores and a vigorous, but not ostentatious, manner of getting his ideas across to the players” noted the Chicago Tribune. Over the last few seasons Feddeck has made a number of significant North American and European debuts, including with the Detroit, Minnesota, Toronto Symphony, City of Birmingham Symphony, Royal Flemish Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Los Angeles Chamber, Helsinki Philharmonic orchestras, as well as Orchestre national de Lyon, Deutsches Symphonie- Orchester Berlin and Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne. Highlights for the 2016/17 season and beyond include debuts with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Seattle Symphony, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic, Bournemouth Symphony, New Zealand Symphony and Tasmania Symphony orchestras, as well as with Radio- Symphonieorchester Wien and Orchestre National de France. Feddeck will also return to the Residentie Orkest and Hallé, Royal Scottish National, Rochester Philharmonic, RTÉ National Symphony and BBC Symphony orchestras. Winner of the prestigious Solti Conducting Award in 2013, Feddeck is a former Assistant in Cleveland, where he conducted subscription concerts and stepped in for Franz Welser-Möst in a fully-staged production of Don Giovanni and in performances of Carmina Burana – both to critical acclaim. Prior to that he studied with David Zinman at the Aspen Music Festival and School where he received the Aspen Conducting Prize in 2008. In addition to his conducting, James Feddeck is an accomplished organist and has performed recitals throughout Europe and North America. He studied oboe, piano, organ and conducting at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and in 2010 was recognised by Oberlin as the first recipient of the Outstanding Young Alumni Award. • Strauss' Four Last Songs
Richard Strauss: Four Last Songs A discographical survey by Ralph Moore I consider forty-six recordings of the Vier Letzte Lieder here, which is a goodly number, but by no means the total of all of those released in the nearly seventy years since their premiere in 1950. A survey cannot hope – or even want – to encompass every version but I have tried to include the most notable and have deliberately missed out a few which I know to be less than premium quality but have also reviewed one or two in the “caveat emptor” category as best avoided (see also MWI review index). These songs feature frequently in lists of personal nominations for favourite recordings, such as in the BBC radio programme “Desert Island Discs”. They are not a cycle as such, but all deal with the readiness for death and emanate a sense of calm, resignation and even transfiguration; I quote unashamedly from Wikipedia: “Towards the end of Im Abendrot, after the soprano's intonation of ‘Ist dies etwa der Tod?’ (‘Is this perhaps death?’), Strauss musically quotes his own tone poem Death and Transfiguration, written 60 years earlier. As in that piece, the quoted seven-note phrase (known as the ‘transfiguration theme’) has been seen as the fulfilment of the soul through death.” They are amenable to successful performance by a range of soprano voice-types, from the mezzo- tinged soprano falcon of Jessye Norman to the light, lyric sopranos of Lucia Popp or Anneliese Rothenberger, and although one or two sopranos have come a cropper in attempting them, there are many more admirable and even superlative recordings than failures.

  • Former ISO Music Director John Nelson Returns to Conduct Brahms’ Requiem Nov
For release: Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012 Contact: Jessica Di Santo – (317) 229-7082 Former ISO Music Director John Nelson Returns to Conduct Brahms’ Requiem Nov. 2 and 3 Featuring soprano Aga Mikolaj, baritone Nathan Berg and the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir, Nelson dedicates performance of Brahms’ masterpiece to his wife, Anita Nelson (1941-2012) INDIANAPOLIS – The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and its former Music Director John Nelson will be joined by two vocalists and the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir to perform Johannes Brahms’ largest work, Ein Deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem), in Lilly Classical Series concerts Nov. 2 and 3, at 8 p.m. in the Hilbert Circle Theatre. The concert opens with Mozart’s Exsultate, jubilate, a work penned in 1773 for solo voice and orchestra. The ISO is joined by soprano Aga Mikolaj for this joyful work, Mozart’s celebration of his opera hall successes. Written in three parts, Exsultate, jubilate was originally intended for a castrato singer, now more commonly performed by a female singer. The text is religious but the colorful, uplifted character and vocal virtuosity are strongly reminiscent of Mozart’s opera arias. Following intermission, the concert continues with Johannes Brahms’ A German Requiem. Begun in 1865 after the death of his mother — and perhaps still thinking of his friend, Robert Schumann’s death years before — Brahms himself wrote the libretto, drawing from Biblical texts. Unlike the Catholic Mass for the Dead, the focus is not on the deceased until the final moments of the work, focusing instead on spiritual introspection. Brahms’ economical use of the orchestra’s colors, baritone and soprano soloists, and choir portray emotions ranging from quiet intimacy to somber reflection.
