One native group from this area, in particular, the Quechua, is the focus of this paper. The Quechua communities include Huanca, Chanka, Q’ero, Taquile, and Amantani, but, for the purposes of my analysis, all of these groups will be dealt with together as they share similar use of natural resources for food and medicine (Wilson, 1999). -

Languages of the Middle Andes in areal-typological perspective: Emphasis on Quechuan and Aymaran Willem F.H. Adelaar 1. Introduction1 Among the indigenous languages of the Andean region of Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, northern Chile and northern Argentina, Quechuan and Aymaran have traditionally occupied a dominant position. Both Quechuan and Aymaran are language families of several million speakers each. Quechuan consists of a conglomerate of geo- graphically defined varieties, traditionally referred to as Quechua “dialects”, not- withstanding the fact that mutual intelligibility is often lacking. Present-day Ayma- ran consists of two distinct languages that are not normally referred to as “dialects”. The absence of a demonstrable genetic relationship between the Quechuan and Aymaran language families, accompanied by a lack of recognizable external gen- etic connections, suggests a long period of independent development, which may hark back to a period of incipient subsistence agriculture roughly dated between 8000 and 5000 BP (Torero 2002: 123–124), long before the Andean civilization at- tained its highest stages of complexity. Quechuan and Aymaran feature a great amount of detailed structural, phono- logical and lexical similarities and thus exemplify one of the most intriguing and intense cases of language contact to be found in the entire world. Often treated as a product of long-term convergence, the similarities between the Quechuan and Ay- maran families can best be understood as the result of an intense period of social and cultural intertwinement, which must have pre-dated the stage of the proto-lan- guages and was in turn followed by a protracted process of incidental and locally confined diffusion. -

TEXAS PAPER ON LATIN AMERICA Pre-publication working papers of the Institute of Latin American Studies University of Texas at Austin ISSN 0392-3507 Linguistic and Cultural Geography of Contemporary Peru Gregory Knapp Department of Geography Paper No. 87-13 Linguistic and Cultural Geograpby of Contemporary Peru Gregory Knapp In view of the recent upsurge of interest in Peruvian regions and regional development (CDI- CEDESA 1984; González de Olarte 1985), it is surprising that none of these discussions of regional- ization adequately takes into account language or culture. In many countries, regional divisions have been primarily based on cultural or linguistic pattems, and the greatest challenge has been 10 achieve balanced development for all ethnic groups. The available etbnic maps for Peru are based on language. They show spheres of influence for various languages (pesce 1969) but lack a quantitative basis and do not indicate the numerically pre- ponderant languages and cultures. They also do not distinguish between cultural groups that are not indigenous language speakers. This report, by using quantitative data of language and ethnicity as found in various censuses, will attempt to map the cultural regions of Peru. Language as a Cultural Indicator There are three advantages to using language as a point of departure in mapping and defining culture regions: (1) language is strongly implicated in the transmission of culture and is thus linked to many nonlinguistic cultural traits, such as folklore, religion, and music; (2) language frontiers between groups impede cultural transmission and many times coincide with other cultural boundaries, including agricultural and housing traits; (3) language is a cultural trait that is relatively stable and easy 10 determine through census information. -

Printed in the United States of America www.doaks.org/etexts.html Andean Androgyny and the Making of Men CAROLYN DEAN UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SANTA CRUZ n 19 March 1804, Doña Pasquala Quigua, an indigenous Andean, completed her last will and testament in Cusco, Peru.1 In the will, she Odenounced her second husband as a wastrel, subject to numerous vices, who squandered the major portion of the wealth she had brought to their union. Doña Pasquala complained bitterly about her husband’s failure to generate any income, his inability to father children by her, and the fact that he kept a mistress for the twelve years of their marriage. Claiming, nonetheless, to have pardoned his manifold shortcomings, she bequeathed him two Chuncho dance costumes and a parrot, probably intending its colorful feathers to be used in the Chuncho headdress.2 “Chuncho” was the generic highland Andean des- ignation for a number of cultural or ethnic groups native to the montaña, the heavily forested zone of the eastern Andean piedmont, particularly the region of the Inka empire known as Antisuyu, to the east of the capital of Cusco (Steward 1963).3 The montaña dwellers were stereotyped by highlanders, serranos, as savage cannibals; it was also said that male Chunchos were effeminate. The book presents the original distribution of these languages in early colonial Matthias Urban times, discusses available and lost sources, and traces their demise as speakers switched to Spanish at different points of time after conquest. To the extent possible, the book also explores what can be learned about the sound system, grammar, and lexicon of the North Coast languages from the available materials. It explores what can be said on past language contacts and the linguistic areality of the North Coast and Northern Peru as a whole, and asks to what extent linguistic boundaries on the North Coast can be projected into the pre-Columbian past.
