UWE EBEL DARBIETUNGSFORMEN UND DARBIETUNGSABSICHT IN FORNALDARSAGA UND VERWANDTEN GATTUNGEN VORBEMERKUNG Der folgende Beitrag erschien zuerst 1982. Die mit ihm verfolgte Intention war es, ausgehend von den Graden der Fiktionalisierung des jeweils entfalteten Geschehens eine Differenz zwischen Íslendingasaga und Fornaldarsaga zu erarbeiten. Dabei hatte sich gezeigt, dass die Íslendingasaga trotz all der Momente, die sie als 'realistisch' erlebbar macht, das literarische Phänomen der Semantisierung von Form- elementen kennt, und dass die Fornaldarsaga trotz ihrer Phantastik solche Seman- tisierung nicht oder kaum aufweist. Ohne die mittelalterlichen Texte über jüngere und unangemessene Kriterien und Kategorien beschreiben zu wollen, ließe sich also ein Differenzmerkmal darin erblicken, dass die Íslendingasaga strukturell der Fiktion und die Fornaldarsaga strukturell dem Tatsachenbericht zuzuordnen sind. Erst im Verlauf der Gattungsgeschichte tritt in der Fornaldarsaga der Aspekt der Unter- haltung in den Vordergrund. Mit alledem soll nicht gesagt sein, dass der moderne Begriff der 'Literatur' dem originären Kontext gerecht wird, auch nicht, dass die Intention der Redaktoren und Traditoren damit beschrieben wäre. Das strukturelle Differenzmerkmal ist dennoch nicht zu verkennen und es gälte auszuwerten, was das über die fiktionale Gestaltung von Geschehen im isländischen Mittelalter besagt. This study maintains that some of these puzzling phenomena may derive from riddles, and will focus particularly on some plausible answers that refer to a real creature that has for millennia been valued and hunted by man: the honeybee. -

ELIZABETH ASHMAN ROWE FOLKTALE AND PARABLE: The Unity o/Gautreks Saga As SEVERAL SCHOLARS have pointed out, Gautreks saga has no single pro- tagonist, no chronological plot, and a haphazard assortment of characters and settings.' It is currently considered a single text, but the heterogenous nature of its parts is so great that it has led in the past to the perception of these parts 2 as constituting relatively independent/?œrf/7. Despite such „deviations" from the techniques of classical composition, I would like to propose that a single 3 theme does inform the saga. In it, the traditional characteristics of the suc- 1 E.g., Boyer (1979) and Kathryn Hume (1973). Joseph Harris (1975, 1986:210 ff.) has drawn attention to a number of texts which do not display „biographical unity", such as Qg- mundar þáttr dytts ok Gunnars helmings, and Gautreks saga can be added to the list. Although Gautreks saga is preserved in two versions, one shorter and earlier, and the other longer and later, it is with the longer one, believed written towards the end of the thirteenth century, that I am concemed. See Ranisch (1900:i—xviii). The shorter version, whose lack of detail makes the action seem illogical and unmotivated, also does not include the story of Starkaðr. Henceforth, references to Gautreks saga indicate the longer version unless specified otherwise. 2 So Schier (1970:76, 78, 89). Hermann Pálsson and Edwards (1985:10-3) give no hint in the introduction to their translation that Gautreks saga might be „separable", and the assumption of the unity of Gautreks saga is essential to the argument of Régis Boyer (1979). -

History or fiction? Truth-claims and defensive narrators in Icelandic romance-sagas RALPH O’CONNOR University of Aberdeen Straining the bounds of credibility was an activity in which many mediaeval Icelandic saga-authors indulged. In §25 of Göngu-Hrólfs saga, the hero Hrólfr Sturlaugsson wakes up from an enchanted sleep in the back of beyond to find both his feet missing. Somehow he manages to scramble up onto his horse and find his way back to civilisation – in fact, to the very castle where his feet have been secretly preserved by his bride-to-be. Also staying in that castle is a dwarf who happens to be the best healer in the North.1 Hann mælti: ‘… skaltu nú leggjast niðr við eldinn ok baka stúfana.’ Hrólfr gerði svâ; smurði hann þá smyrslunum í sárin, ok setti við fætrna, ok batt við spelkur, ok lèt Hrólf svâ liggja þrjár nætr. Leysti þá af umbönd, ok bað Hrólf upp standa ok reyna sik. Hrólfr gerði svâ; voru honum fætrnir þá svâ hægir ok mjúkir, sem hann hefði á þeim aldri sár verit. ‘He said, … “Now you must lie down by the fire and warm the stumps”. ‘Hrólfr did so. Then he [the dwarf] applied the ointment to the wounds, placed the feet against them, bound them with splints and made Hrólfr lie like that for three nights. Then he removed the bandages and told Hrólfr to stand up and test his strength. Hrólfr did so; his feet were then as efficient and nimble as if they had never been damaged.’2 This is rather hard to believe – but our scepticism has been anticipated by the saga-author. -
Studies in the Sources of J.R.R. Tolkien's the Lord of the Rings

(3 f Preface i In the Spring of 1968 while I was studying the Old English poem Beowulf with Dr. Rudolph Bambas, my colleague and classmate Judith Moore suggested that I might enjoy reading a new work by J:R.R. Tolkien, known to us as the editor of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and the author of that seminal article -- “Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics.” The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings delighted me that summer. In the fall, at the urging of another colleague, I enrolled in the Old Norse seminar. That conjunction of events proved to be the beginning of a lifelong study of Northern literature and its contributions to the cauldron of story which produced The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, and The Unfinished Tales. The first version of this study became my doctoral dissertation -- “Studies in the Sources of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.“1 Throughout the years that followed while I was either teaching college English or working as a librarian, I have continued my research. The original study was based on about twenty-five sagas; that number has been tripled. Christopher Tolkien’s careful publication of The Silmarillion, The Unfinished Tales, and six volumes of The Historv of Middle-earth has greatlyreatly expanded the canon available for scholarly study. Humphrey Carpenter’s authorized biography has also been helpful. However, the Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien have produced both the . greatest joy and the greatest terror. -

On Gender, Status, and Violence in Old Norse Literature
AÐALHEIÐUR GUÐMUNDSDÓTTIR “How Do You Know if it is Love or Lust?” On Gender, Status, and Violence in Old Norse Literature Abstract This article examines attitudes towards behaviour relating to women within Old Norse literature, focusing both on chivalric romances (translated and original, the riddarasögur) and the legendary sagas (fornaldarsögur), texts that were mostly written in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The written chivalric romances arrived in Iceland from Norway and southern Europe, and thus they often exhib- it different values from those found in thefornaldarsögur , which tend to reflect in- digenous Nordic and heroic storytelling traditions. The article explores differenc- es between the two traditions regarding male emotions and attitudes towards women, with an emphasis on texts in which women are abused. In particular, the article seeks to investigate the relationship between social status and gender roles in these texts, and whether a woman’s rank affects her role and status according to gender. It focuses particularly on romances (especially those featuring courtly love) and fornaldarsögur in which women are either idealised as goddesses, or mistreated and even sexually abused because of their gender. The article con- cludes by asking how far the contrasts within the texts reflect a Norse ‘emotional community,’ as compared with continental European values, and whether these textual differences reflect actual difference in the social expressions of emotion- al behaviour. Ketils saga hængs is an Icelandic legendary saga which is usually dat- ed to the fourteenth century. In one episode the protagonist, Ketill, comes to a farm and asks for hospitality for the night from the mas- ter of the house, Brúni. -
