As a result, the study of this topic in Thai research is still rarely conducted. According to the literature review, we found that some research about the ethnic groups are related with the ethnic group in China which immigrated to Thailand. The objective of this research is divided into two points: 1) The ethnographic synthesis that presents the data of name, history, habitation, social economy, traditions and culture, 2) A synchronic linguistic 2268-60_in.indd68-60_in.indd 113113 112/29/162/29/16 112:162:16 PPMM วารสารศิลปศาสตร ปที่ 16 ฉบับที่ 2 (กรกฎาคม - ธันวาคม 2559) JOURNAL OF LIBERAL ARTS 16, 2 (JULY - DECEMBER 2016) analysis which consists of language family and dialect, phonology, word formation, vocabulary, grammar and characters. This study found that there are three of Mon-khmer spoken ethnic groups in China namely Bulang, De’ang and Wa. They are settlements who live closely to Dai and Jingpo ethnic groups in Yunnan. According to the ethnographic and linguistics comparative study, we found both correspondences and contrastive points. The contrastive points show the singularity in each language. While, the correspondences show that each language is related with the language at the branch level. The result of language comparison shows that Bulang language is closest in terms of relationship with the De’ang language, and Wa language, was found to be the second closest. The relationship between De’ang language and Wa language is least significant. Rapid urbanization and intensive social exchanges have changed the cultural outlook of ethnic minority groups and society. The related educational issue is how to preserve the cultures and languages of ethnic minorities and their sociocultural identity in the process of government-encouraged social and cultural integration with Han culture, Mandarin, and modernity. Sociocultural Ethnic Minority Groups in Yunnan Province, PRC Yunnan Province in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) is slightly smaller in size than the U.S. state of California. Its diverse geography and widespread rurality are home to approximately 48.3 million people (2018 estimate). While the majority are of Han ethnicity, 34% (16.4 million) of the population are members of ethnic minority groups. The 25 largest ethnic groups within the province have populations of 5,000 or more, including the Yi, Hani, Bai, Dai, Zhuang, Miao, Hui, and Lahu. A number of these ethnic groups also move freely back and forth between the borders of the PRC and neighboring countries leading to fluctuations in minority populations and quite active cross-border relations.

    Genevieve Yuek-Ling Leung ([email protected]), University of Pennsylvania Paper title: Hoisan-wa reclaimed: Chinese American language maintenance in contemporary sociolinguistic perspective ! While Mandarin Chinese is currently heavily emphasized in language teaching and heritage language arenas, little research has looked at how speakers of other Chinese languages negotiate their language choices and use in relation to this present pressure. This paper looks at the language and cultural maintenance efforts of a specific heritage of Chinese Americans: Hoisan-wa (Toishanese/台山話) heritage people. Considered a “dialect” of Cantonese that is around 70% mutually intelligible with Standard Cantonese (Szeto, 2000), Hoisan-wa is one of the languages linking nearly all early Chinese immigrants in the U.S.; not only has its status been slowly devalued due to standard Chineses’ (Mandarin, Cantonese) existence in the U.S., it has also been perpetually overlooked in educational research for the last 150 years. Data come from 100 sociolinguistic interviews of Hoisan heritage people in California. Interviewees, ranging from ages 6-97, many of whom belonging to different generations of the same family, were asked to talk about various issues of language maintenance, including ways Hoisan-wa is used in the family, intergenerational communication, and perceived challenges. While domain analysis (cf. Fishman, 1968) of language choice across three generations shows languages shifting from monolingual Hoisan-wa grandparents to multilingual Hoisan-wa, Cantonese, and English parents to mostly monolingual English children, Hoisan-wa language resources available in some families seem to also have been reordered and specialized into functional social spheres (cf. Blommaert, 2010). That is, despite ongoing changes in context of use and esteem, Hoisan-wa is still significant to these families in ways that have diverged across generations.
