Germany - The Five Rivers Cycle Tour 2020 Individual Self-Guided 9 days/ 8 nights The five rivers you will follow are the rivers Vils, Naab, Altmühl, Pegnitz and the famous Danube. Take your time for all the old small towns, the romantic villages and the changing landscapes. Enjoy the rough charm of the Upper Palatine, romantic Franconia and the specialties of the Bavarian cuisine. Right in the centre of this metropolis with half a million inhabitants, the town houses, proud churches, the castle and 5 km of walls that circle the town have all been resurrected. Day 2: Nuremberg – Neumarkt 45 km Starting in Nuremberg, you head in a south easterly direction, following the Pegnitz and Ludwig-Danube-Main canal. Here, at the edge of the Franconian Uplands, cycling is easy, with no hills to worry about. In Burgthann, which is home to a castle and a local museum, you can take a break for some culture before continuing on to Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate. Day 3: Neumarkt – Berching 35 km Via Freystadt, with its lovely Maria Hilf pilgrimage church, you reach the Main-Danube-Canal, which now shows you the way. Over quite some Wikipedia.com distance, you simply roll right next to the canal, downstream. Cycling here really is the best way to simply enjoy the countryside. The peaceful canal in symbiosis with nature. Day 4: Berching – Kelheim 55 km Today you'll be cycling along different waterways of the Altmühl River, known especially for their unspoiled nature. Via Dietfurt and Riedenburg, you get to Essing, which is home to one of the favourite holiday snaps of the entire Altmühl Valley. The two storied tower with its 46 meter long wooden bridge. Following your level route, you now continue to Kelheim. Your destination, the lovely town of Kelheim, knows how to charm its visitors. Day 5: Kelheim – Regensburg 35 km A unique wonder of nature awaits you! As this is just a short section by bike, there's enough time for a boat trip through the wild and romantic "Weltenburg Enge" (the Danube Gap) and a visit to the famous Weltenburg Abbey (not included in price). Next, you follow the Danube to Regensburg, whose old town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site many years ago already. Day 6: Regensburg – Kallmünz 30 km You leave Regensburg and cycle along the Naab, meadows, forests and fields lining your way. Along both sides of the river you'll see Jurassic rocks, some up to 100 metres tall, rising up over the pretty valley. This is where Wassily Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter worked, in the shade of the lime trees, chestnut trees and stately plane trees. You whizz along a former railway line, through the forests and passing the meadows of the lovely Vils Valley. The former railway line along this little river is great for cycling. It's also well signposted and takes you right up to the old capital of Upper Palatinate, Amberg. Day 8: Amberg – Hersbruck 45 km After a level section of the route, today you will encounter more hills. You cycle to the old mountain town of SulzbachRosenberg, some 1000 years old, built on mighty rock. Next, you cross one of the most densely wooded areas in Germany. The cycle path takes you through the so-called "Hersbruck Switzerland". Your destination, the town of Hersbruck, was the centre of hop growing for many hundreds of years. Wikipedia.com Day 9: Hersbruck – Nuremberg 35 km Individual departure, without overnight stay You leave Hersbruck through the famous water gate, and set off into Pegnitz Valley and its almost entirely unspoiled river countryside. Castle Henfendfeld beckons from up above. Lauf, on the River Pregnitz, which symbolizes the entrance to the Franconian Uplands, is worth a visit. For the most part, the cycle path runs along the rivers on separate, mostly paved agricultural roads or small side roads, completely away from the traffic. Only in the cities and segmented sections you may find greater traffic volumes. The section of Amberg and Schmidmühlen follows the route of the old railway line which is unpaved but well-fortified. On the segment from Berching to Nuremberg, the route largely follows along gravel historical tow paths.
