ENTERTEXT Identity as Cultural Production in Andrea Levy's Small Island Author: Alicia E. Ellis Source: EnterText, “Special Issue on Andrea Levy 9,” (2012): 69-83. Abstract Andrea Levy's Small Island (2004) presents a counter-history of the period before and after World War II (1939-1945) when men and women from the Caribbean volunteered for all branches of the British armed services and many eventually immigrated to London after the war officially ended in 1945. Her historical novel moves back and forth between 1924 and 1948 as well as across national borders and cultures. Levy’s novel, written more than fifty years after the first Windrush arrival, creates a common narrative of nation and identity in order to understand the experiences of Black people in Britain. Small Island—structured around four competing voices whose claims of textual, personal and historical truth must be acknowledged—refuses to establish a singular articulation of the experience of migration and empire. In this essay, I focus on discrete moments in the “Prologue” in Levy’s Small Island in order to think through the formation of discursive identity through the encounter with others and the necessity of accommodating difference. Small Island forecloses the possibility of addressing modern multiculturalism as a purported ‘happy ending’ in light of Levy’s formulation of the Windrush moment as disruptive, violent, and overwhelmed by flawed characters. Yet, through the space of writing, she also invites the reader to experience moments of encounter and negotiate the often competing claims on nationhood, citizenship, and culture. Abstract Can ‘loving blackness’ become a new discourse for anti-racism in the UK and the broader black diaspora? This thesis will critically assess the concept of ‘loving blackness as political resistance’ as outlined by the African American feminist bell hooks (1992). The thesis will show the ways in which blackness has been both negated and denigrated in western cultures and thus constructed in opposition to notions of love and humanness. Conversely, love and blackness are also rehabilitated in different ways by Black diasporic populations in Britain through the transnational space. The transnational space can provide opportunities for constructing, networks of care, love and anti racist strategies that affirm the value of blackness and Black life. However, the transnational space can also be fraught with risks, dangers and exclusions providing Black and migrant populations with uneven forms of citizenship and belonging to western neo-liberal states. -

London's Sonic Space
Introduction: London’s sonic space London provides a vast space – bigger in some senses than the nation – in which cultures can be differently imagined and conceived. (Kevin Robins) This book is about three black music multicultures in London in the 1980s and 1990s: rare groove, acid house and jungle. It is a critical explora tion of the role they have played in the production of what Stuart Hall once identified as London’s ‘workable, lived multiculture’ (Hall 2004). These are not the only important black music scenes in London: that list would include soca, jazz and Afrojazz, Afrobeat, dancehall, hip hop, UK garage, R&B and grime, and to include them all would have called for a much bigger book. So, this is not a comprehensive study of all black music produced and consumed in the city. I focus on rare groove, acid house and jungle because they are three moments that involved inter-racial collaboration, in terms of both production and consumption, around black music. They were music scenes which put the racial divisions of the city into question and worked against the logic of spatial separation. They explored new ways in which culture could be inhabited collectively. In ways both deliberate and contingent, these musical scenes involved collaboration between young people from different sides of what the great black American sociologist W. E. B. Du Bois (1903) identified as ‘the color line’, and hosted lived multi culture on the dancefloor. Around each scene, discourses developed to address this cultural intermixture, and within them were forged new ways of dancing, listening and making 1 It’s a London thing culture together. -

West Indian immigration: To what extent was West Indian national identity shaped by their experiences in Britain during the Windrush era (1948-1963)? History Abstract Page | 1 The arrival of the ship MV Empire Windrush on 22 June 1948 is largely considered the land mark of post-war mass migration to Britain. With approximately 492 Caribbean men and women aboard the ship, their lives in Britain following their arrival has been a key area of examination. Throughout this study, I use the Empire Windrush as an overarching case study that forms the central basis of my research. My dissertation explores how ‘Britishness’ influenced the national identity of West Indian citizens, from both within the colonies and during their time in Britain. It analyses the impact of the cultural and economic hardships experienced by Caribbean immigrants, while also highlighting the formation of newfound resistance to these adversities. Therefore, it becomes clear that the role of the ‘Mother country’ within the narrative of West Indian immigration has played a major role in defining West Indian national identity. This notable journey marked the beginning of the Windrush influx which saw thousands of Caribbean citizens endure the same journey to a post-war Britain. Promises of employment opportunities, financial stability and a more prosperous future were key driving factors of this movement.
